EvilBit, do games w Any Roguelike/Roguelite suggestions?

Binding of Isaac is some OG classic stuff if you haven’t played that one, and Neon Abyss is a fun side-scrolling game on a similar vibe. Rogue Legacy 1 (very OG) and 2 and Dead Cells are also side scrolling , with a dash of Metroidvania.

If you like Slay the Spire, Astrea is the same thing but with dice, and Monster Train also scratches the same itch.

9tr6gyp3, do games w what was the last game you played in 2024?

Breath of the Wild. Enjoying it so far

@DocMcStuffin@lemmy.world avatar

So, most of my recommendations are going to be FPS or first person. For Valve related stuff:

  • Half-Life 2 is pretty much a must have along with Episodes 1 and 2.
  • Black Mesa is a remake of the original.
  • Entropy : Zero 2 is a fantastic fan made mod that’s a good follow up after finishing Half-Life 2 and the episodes.
  • The original Entropy : Zero is pretty good, but the default difficulty is hard as hell.
  • Portal 1 and 2 are also a must have
  • Portal: Revolution is an independent mod that’s a good follow up after 2.

As for non-Valve games and related:

  • Crab Champions - fast paced, third-person, rogue-like shooter.
  • Talos Principle 1 and 2 - first-person puzzles with a serious philosophical scifi story. It actually gets a bit heavy when it discusses mortality and death. 1 is being remade into a “definitive edition”.
  • Untitled Goose Game - Honk!
  • Gnorp Apologue - fun little game
  • Pineapple on pizza - it’s free. I would describe it as games-as-art.
  • Any of the Serious Sam games. They were made for PC.
  • Fallen Aces is still in early access, but a good story driven retro FPS with sprites and multiple ways of navigating each level.
  • Trepang2 - a bit of an odd FPS with bullet time.
  • Roboquest - rogue like FPS
  • Exit 8 - horror walking simulator. Kinda short once you figure it out.
  • APE OUT - Ape smash! Top down “shooter”.
  • Hotline Miami 1 and 2 - top down shooters with fast deaths and excellent soundtracks
  • The Binding of Isaac - has always been popular if a little dated
  • Gunpoint - stealth puzzle third person. Came out a decade ago, but a good game.
  • Party Hard - little indie murder-everyone-and-don’t-get-caught.
  • The Stanley Parable - walking simulator with some interesting dialog and interactions. 9-to-5 office people can relate.
  • Dusk - awesome boomer shooter
  • Antichamber - came out a decade ago, but it’s mind bending first-person puzzles.
  • Hades and Hades 2 which is in early access. Third person isometric rogue-like.
  • The Invincible - Story driven walking simulator based off the book of the same name. Good story.
  • Firewatch - story driven walking simulator
  • Deep Rock Galactic - wasn’t my pint of beer, but a lot of people like it.

DdCno1,

I think this was an Atari 2600 on a chip though, not emulation, although I’m not 100% sure. Wikipedia states that the successor from 2005 used such a design, but surely this must have been the only way of creating this kind of low-cost device in 2002. I doubt there was anything cheap enough that could emulate even a system as basic as the 2600 in software back then.

barsoap,

The 2600 used a MOS 6507, which is a cut-down 6502, which had ~3500 logic transistors (not counting the ones necessary because NMOS), running at a max of 3MHz. Add very primitive graphics and 8k RAM.

Can’t be arsed to slog through suitable processors but ARM cores back then could kill that thing dead. 2002 is six years after the Palm Pilot while Moore’s law was still in full effect. The 2600 is from 1977, two decades more ancient.

There should even be more than enough cycles left over to generate the video signal in software.

DdCno1,

Sure, but 2002 was a bit too early for ARM chips in what was essentially a cheap children’s toy. They were still too complex and expensive for this kind of thing at the time - not to mention, there were few emulators that ran on this architecture available, so it would have to be specifically developed.

sleepybisexual,

I know, that’s where I got imspiration…but like something that cousl also act as a PC controller

CottyCat, do games w Longtime buddy of mine just got a gaming PC. What games would make up a good "welcome to PC" care package?

Shower With Your Dad Simulator

TastyWheat,

Came here to post this! Every new Steam account gets a copy, it’s the law.

CottyCat,

It was the first game I was gifted! My second recommendation is “I Love You Colonel Sanders!: A Finger Lickin’ Good Dating Simulator”. Who needs more satisfaction than that?

TastyWheat,

Oh that game is CRAZY. Free too!

daggermoon,

That sounds disturbing

It’s not as elegant, but you might be able to give them some Steam Gift Cards and recommend some games.

EvilBit, do games w We all need Seaman back in our lives!

To this day, if I turn to my best friend and say “sup”, his response will either be “Oh, not much, just… keeping it real.” or just “Word.” Vice versa as well.

These are the exact responses Seaman gives, which we deliver with proper intonation and all.

sandalbucket, do games w Developer of WalkScape (the fitness MMORPG where you progress by walking IRL) here again. We're accepting new players and have a Lemmy community!

I’m intrigued, but have two questions:

  1. Does running count?
  2. Can I pull in data from a fitness app / smart watch (Garmin)?
schamppu,

Running counts! Also treadmills or walking pads, as long as you have your phone in your pocket.

Smart watches are not supported yet, but coming. Smart watch support would already work great on iOS, but we’re held up by Google with it as they introduced Health Connect for smart watch integrations and it’s a buggy mess at the moment. Google Fit APIs (that would’ve worked nicely) are deprecated.

MrScottyTay, (edited ) do games w Have JRPG battles become a sub-system?

OG FFVII is full of minigames. I don’t think rebirth has more than the OG, also it’s like half of the game not a third (the last disc is just the final dungeon, and the second disc is not as long as the first).

When the OG does a minigame it’s often a one and done thing. Rebirth madness it feel like more because you can go back and do more of each minigame with increasing difficulties etc.

I think subsystems just lend very well to JRPGs because they’re often trying to create a world, and adding such to their games makes their worlds feel more full. I also think the Japanese do their game development different to the west most of the time. Since a lot of these minigames are made because developers have finished the parts of the main game they were working on so they mess around trying to make something new and fun that might be able to be tacked on as an extra.

TheV2, do games w What did everyone grab during the Steam Winter Sale?

Nothing. It was a difficult choice, but it was a necessary sacrifice in favor of the games, collecting dust in my library :*-)

DarkFuture, do games w What games have you sunk the most time into?
@DarkFuture@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve been playing a Half-Life mod called Sven Coop since 1999. I play almost daily, if only for a half an hour when I get home to unwind. Multiple server owners have given me admin rights to help manage their servers so sometimes I’m just there to kick griefers or change levels that are broken so people don’t leave. There are many thousands of user made levels. People are still making them. The mod is still getting updated. Just did actually.

It wasn’t added to Steam until 2016. So there was no way for me to track play hours until then. Since 2016 it shows that I have a little over 3000 hours. And I used to play more before I became an adult and had to do adult things. So I can only imagine what my total hours are.

10,000 hours? And that’s probably conservative.

I will have been playing regularly for 26 years this January.

It seems like it from the trailer, but I’m nervous about the voice actress, she does sound different than 3… But I’m willing to give her a fair chance

Bahnd,

From the trailer, its clear that its ~15-20 year time skip, she is able to drink witcher potions so she passed the trial of grasses, and clearly has much more control of her powers.

The trial of grasses point is where im concerned, yes she would have plot armor for a procedure that has a notriously low survival rate, plus the school of the wolf (Geralt, Vesimier and co.) destroied their old records after the events of the first game so that noone could produce more witchers.

MarcomachtKuchen, do games w Do you have any recommendations for casual games?

How has noone mentioned Powerwash Simulator yet. There is no pressure (pun not intended), you just walk around dirty scenes and start cleaning them. The amount of satisfaction this produces is incredible. This is mostly because the dirt is actually fairly accurate and washing does not feel like brushing dirt of where the only options is 100% dirt or 0% dirt. All of the intermediates and the complex geometry of the objects makes cleaning a really chilling experience.

Aviandelight,
@Aviandelight@mander.xyz avatar

I will also add both of the House Flipper games!

JudahBenHur,

im not trying to be provocative

but have you ever considered actually cleaning things

you can get paid to do this

irl power washwers are fun

MarcomachtKuchen,

Yeah I can see that, but currently that’s not a viable line in my career to take

JudahBenHur,

ah well then laddie you just tell me when youre ready to man the old washer

theres always work down the shipyard for ye

jerakor,

Same could be said for any game. The value mostly of a game is the controlled progression with little impact. If I go start power washing the driveway and then stop at a moments notice to go take a shower and head to work I’m gonna leave a giant mess laying around and a half done driveway.

superkret,

Same could be said for any game.

No. No, it really couldn’t.

jerakor,

Instead of playing games, go outside, touch grass, undergo the series of organ implantations that are required to become a Space Marine. The only thing holding you back is yourself.

JudahBenHur,

so, uh… it really couldnt be said of any game at all… the idea that the game makes it better than real power washing because you can stop at any time with out leaving a half finished driveway is cracking me up dude i love it
