So far we’ve had “amazing Fallout RPG on a janky engine” when (Black Isle / Obsidian) developed it, and “bland Fallout RPG on a janky engine” when Bethesda have developed it. Having both great writers and a decent engine would be amazing for Fallout, although just Obsidian and their Pillars of Eternity engine would be perfect with me.
Larian have said that they’d like to get away from DnD 5e after working on BG3 for so long, so I’m assuming they won’t have licensed Pathfinder either. If we take the set of all possible IPs and strike out those two, then that must make Fallout more likely. (Albeit not very likely.)
With the renewed interest from the show, it would make sense for Microsoft to get someone else working on a Fallout game since Bethesda isn’t going to do it any time soon. However, I would think that Obsidian would be the more natural choice. I would guess that MS would prefer to utilize one of the studios they own rather than license it out, but I could be wrong about that.
And even if they did license out development on a Fallout game, I would assume that they would be in a hurry to get something out there, which would make Larian far less appealing to them. I agree that they would probably make an amazing Fallout game, but another studio would probably make a decent enough game that costs less to develop and pays off sooner.
Bethesda has said that they aren’t going to do one until after the next Elder Scrolls game, so if anything in the Fallout world is going to come out on any kind of a near-term schedule, it’s going to have to be via someone with available bandwidth licensing it.
A new IP is smart. Many game developers have gotten huge when a successful franchise takes off. Assassin’s Creed, The Elder Scrolls (Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, ESO), Fallout (like you mentioned), Mass Effect, Grand Theft Auto, Far Cry, Witcher, just to name a few.
Love BG3 and Divinity OS2, about ten hours into DOS and enjoying it too. They have top tier storytelling and seem to enjoy what they do. I’ll be getting whatever they do next but I hope it’s sci-fi.
Right?! They must have so much fun coming up with races and classes etc so a fresh canvas to create on would be killer. Plus they make nice visuals and the soundtrack for DOS2/BG3 is 👌
So, Patch 8 is preparing for stress testing later this month (from what I’ve seen), so that would imply most development work is complete and they’re doing testing and bug fixing right now. That wouldn’t require most of their resources anymore.
If two platforms share compatibility then developers can choose to target the weaker system and release on both.
For some games this might involve a bit of compromise and cause resentment with the owners of the more powerful system, but for other (simple) games it might not involve any compromise at all.
Either way there are a lot of Switch consoles in the wild and there will be some publisher support for the Switch for a few years yet.
As an example from the other side of the fence ps4 is still getting titles:
You might get one dual console launch game like twilight princess or BotW but that’s it. If switch 1 could run elden ring or FF7R they’d have had ports years ago
I literally could not care less. Thanks to their relentless pursuit of emulator developers and fans who mod their games, Nintendo is dead to me. I’ll never understand why they choose to sue their biggest, most dedicated fans into oblivion. It’s pure evil.
I’m not saying they’re doing the right thing but this is always such an overreaction. Among all the evil in the world today nintendo’s actions are relatively minor, and widespread piracy gives them a plausible legal basis for doing it
You don’t think corporate greed is evil? Not as evil as the shit going down in Israel and the current state of US politics (amongst so many other things), but still evil nonetheless.
I could in some ways understand their pursuit of emulators when they’re monetizing those same games currently (even if I disagree with their pricing structure on them). What really got my goat was when they went after Garry’s Mod animations, a medium that has promoted their visibility and never conflicted with their software sales in the slightest.
Yeah, they’re jerks who happen to produce good games from time to time and build consoles out of parts that are 4 years old at launch.
I believe Nintendo went after Switch emulators because the new Switch shares enough with the original to make it a cake walk to emulate Switch 2 games with better performance.
That’s what pisses me off so much. Instead of releasing a console with decent performance, they rather sue their fans into oblivion, just because they want to run their games @ 4K 120Hz. I wouldn’t need a Switch emulator if their god damn console wasn’t so weak. It can’t even handle 30 FPS in many titles, let alone 120+. It’s not like these are demanding titles, either. I’ve played mobile games with better graphics. There’s no excuse.
Nintendo has had such terrible quality control when it comes to performance on Switch. First party Nintendo games even suffer from unacceptable framerate drops. So many Switch games struggle to perform well on the Switch; we need a Switch 2 just to get all the Switch 1 games to play at the intended performance level.
Seeing Master Chief rumored to be arriving on switch makes me wish Sony would give Little Big Planet a port on Switch. My Steam Deck can already do LBP on the go (somewhat) but i can’t help but feel like LBP and the Switch would be a perfect match
No no it’s good, this is actually better than them making a proper announcement. Community loves this shit.
Quick summary:
Dev changes name, handle, and pfp on twitter. Posts a cryptic message about keeping your eyes closed tomorrow.
Reverse image search of pfp leads to a recipe released April 2nd
Cryptic message appears to be a reference to an Imagine Dragons thing from April 2nd
“Tomorrow” was interpreted as being related to the big switch 2 reveal, launching April 2nd
The name and handle also appear to be references to things having to do with April 2nd
The community is ablaze right now. Without a hint of irony: there is more genuine belief in the game actually coming out this time than there was before the original delay was announced in 2023, back when we had an official release date
I have a hard time accepting the way social media works. The whole chain of logic you just spelled out makes me want to vomit. I don’t want to have my strings pulled, my chain yanked, or my goose got. I want to be talked to like I’m a person, and I know it’s just going to keep happening less and less and one day it’s going to do my head in.
I get that, but you’re also not quite getting the full picture with this specific instance. The community on Reddit has been waiting for Silksong so long that they have been over-analyzing every single game convention for years to see if we’re going to get a release date, and had a heated debate over whether or not a blood sacrifice of a member of the community would bring the release. They’re a little crazy over there.
The context only increases the granularity of my distaste. We live in a society of conspiracism and forgetful unthinking chaos. I don’t want to read entrails for clues about the future, I want to wait patiently for a good game and not become schizophrenic trying to connect meaningless dots.
I don’t want to read entrails for clues about the future
But, you don’t have to. This is them hinting about a upcoming announcement of a release date. For the average player like you and me, it’s just the announcement itself that we need, and we’ll get that.
Just… don’t pay attention to it? It’s something that interests other people. Imagine if somebody said that about something you liked that they had no interest in.
The silksong community is one of my favorite of all time for years now. Every couple of weeks a new “theme” of insane shitposting evolves. Most fun and creative silly posting I’ve ever seen.
One common post is “_____ every day until silksong comes out”. People are doing fanart challenges, one guy posts a video of himself petting a cat every day which is very popular. The cat had to get a surgery at one point and needed a cone but was fine.
It’s not just noise. It brings people a lot of joy. There’s been several posts over the years from people basically grieving the potential loss/change of the community once the game actually drops. I’ll miss it, too
Tbf there are a lot of people who love solving cryptic puzzles and getting info out of very little, thats why ARGs are a thing. The good thing is, you don’t have to engage, you can just wait for proper announcements but for the people who love this shit they get to have fun, and presumably the devs too for making it.
And imo it shows that team cherry is interacting with the community in a positive way and might actually be finishing the game
It’s not for “normal” people, it’s for die-hard fans in their community, a little brain teaser / clue hunt. For the rest of us, there’ll be a proper announcement and a trailer.
Then don't engage with it lol? You are free to wait for proper official announcement or confirmation of the game instead of being here discussing a cake picture
Don’t get me wrong, I sincerely hope it does come out soon! But I’ve been on the hype train long enough to no longer get my hopes up. Instead, I’ve reached the true hype nirvana: There is no Silksong. There never was any Silksong. It’s merely a collective delusion.
It would be quite funny then to have them shadow drop it on april 1 with people freaking out about trying to tell others only be be met with disbelief as credibility of any statement about game release was already heavily compromised. Bonus point if they add 'coming soon" to logo on steam page for that day.
