It's a shame, but considering that Unity is deep in a hole of unprofitability coupled with high interest rates across the globe, I can't say it's surprising.

Plan A was to rip off all of their users and Plan B seems to be to downsize. I wonder if it'll be enough to right the ship...

I’d assume an issue possibly at the engine level isn’t something that a mod can fix?

The end of the article seems to say as much. However, it seems the Vkd3d developers are trying to improve what they can.

Vilian,

if it run better on linux because of that i’m gonna laugh so much

whileloop,
@whileloop@lemmy.world avatar

That did happen with Elden Ring. Valve found an issue with it and patched it for Vulkan, so it ran better on Steam Deck than Windows.

cybersandwich,

I had a single crash playing starfield on PopOS. Other than that, it’s been incredibly performant for me. Ryzen 5700x and 6700xt GPU

vagrantprodigy,

I’ve got nearly the same specs (5800x and 6700XT), and mine crashes fairly often.

Virkkunen,
@Virkkunen@kbin.social avatar

I've had not a single crash so far and most of my frame dipping issues (from 60 to 40) were solved by lowering the shadows to medium. The only bugs I had were ships spawning in other ships so they spaz out, but that's very rare. On the other hand, Baldurs Gate 3 would constantly drop to 10 FPS and I had severe bugs that locked me out of entire questlines.

But I guess I'm not allowed to enjoy games and have fun because gamebryo = bad

circuitfarmer,
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I’m on a 7600x + 6600XT, and the only crash I’ve ever had was yesterday when loading a save. Also running Pop.

pycorax,

I mean, you could run VKD3D on Windows too to get the improvements.

fsxylo, do games w The Game Awards 2023 fell short of honoring its own industry

I’m learning that people actually care about the rewards and not just scrolling through the announcements list after the show is over.

Why9,

I guess it depends on who you are, and if that’s why you’re watching.

CDPR has a disastrous launch but came through for their fans by committing to delivering a solid game that won them the “Best Ongoing Game” award, again, putting them in their fans’ good graces again for the mistakes they made.

Neil Newbon, the voice actor for Astarion in BG3, spoke in the past about how his face wasn’t a Hollywood face. Despite countless auditions, he was always turned down because of the way he looked. His voice acting and motion capture performance (i.e. actual acting!) in BG3 won him the “Best Performance” award, vindicating him from all those people who said he’s not good enough.

Neil is just one of the many stories of what it takes for individuals and studios to get recognised. This was the peak of his career, to finally be seen for what he can do, and not for what he looks like (I’ve no idea what anyone is complaining about with regards to his appearance!).

They should have given him more than 15 seconds.

p03locke,
@p03locke@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Neil Newbon, the voice actor for Astarion in BG3, spoke in the past about how his face wasn’t a Hollywood face.

This is Hollywood demanding standards so strict and unusual that it borders on bigotry. His face looks fine, and a helluva lot more chiseled than mine.

It’s like when nobody considered casting an actor with dwarfism in a normal role, and then Peter Dinklage started appearing everywhere. But, Hollywood kinda forgot what that meant and didn’t bother to repeat that with other actors with dwarfism.

This is why people still accuse Hollywood of racism and sexism. (Because it’s still true…)

Why9,

Exactly!

Neil is straight up attractive. I don’t understand the disregard for his talents but I’m guessing something else happened that put him on the blacklist?

He has insane talents and I totally agree. Hollywood is vile to the core and it’s no secret, with names big and small, old and young, veteran and rookie all content to say it as it is. It’s sad that Neil was one of the unlucky ones. What’s sadder is all the Neils who couldn’t find a break like BG3 to revive them.

Such a good point about Peter Dinklage too! It was his star power that producers banked on. I’m sure they would never have cast him if he didn’t stand out in GoT.

De_Narm,

Same. I haven’t looked up the nominees, winners or even categories. The next day I saw Monster Hunter Wilds and Metaphor news and that’s really all I care about. I don’t get award shows in general since they don’t change anything for me - the product doesn’t get better or worse depending on the outcome.

notannpc, do games w Unity warns of likely layoffs following runtime fee decision

I feel bad for the people that actually make Unity what it is. I hope the C-suite fucking chokes on the money they’ve taken that they don’t deserve. This whole situation is their fault.

Delphia,

Also I couldnt figure out how to change the controls on any of them. So your stuck with whatever some chode decided the control system should be.

boerbiet, do gaming w CD Projekt passes the 'Best DLC' crown to FromSoftware with Witcher-themed Elden Ring art

To me, they are both winners. I loved Phantom Liberty and just started playing it again last week, only for it to be interrupted by Shadow of the Erdtree. Both DLC’s reminded me how much I loved the base game and both are proper and large content additions. And they both run perfectly on Linux on day 1 <3.

Both these games and their DLC’s are in my opinion what other game studios should aim for.

curiousaur,

Um, it’s Blood and Wine, the Wicher 3 DLC that held the crown, not phantom liberty.

Prox,

This was a surprise to me, too. I naturally assumed the author was referencing Phantom Liberty because, y’know… it’s fucking excellent.

curiousaur,

Did you play blood and wine?

Instigate,

Blood and Wine was honestly amazing. I haven’t enjoyed a DLC or xpac that much since Diablo II: Lord of Destruction. I think maybe the Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind’s expansion Bloodmoon was a great contender as well, but Blood and Wine just took Witcher 3 to a new level. It truly deserved its spot at the top of the heap.

halcyoncmdr,
@halcyoncmdr@lemmy.world avatar

Blood and Wine was exceptional. Much like Shadow of the Erdtree, there was enough content added that they could have almost justified releasing it as a full game. There are full games released today with less content than Blood and Wine brought to TW3.

MeanEYE, do games w Open source community figures out problems with performance in Starfield
@MeanEYE@lemmy.world avatar

Typical Bugthesda. Am only wondering how did they get this big by only releasing buggy products. I can’t for the life of me remember a single product they have made that wasn’t buggy mess that community fixed for them time and time again without any compensation. Not only that community didn’t get any compensation, Bethesda tried to sell their work and pinch some more money.

flucksy_bango,

Imo, despite the bugs and sometimes because of them, they’re really fun games.

ShittyRedditWasBetter,

Yet larian constantly gets free passes.

Any serious bitching about SF seems to me to be nitpicking from folks who were just looking to bitch at Bethesda. It’s a fantastic game with minor issues that are easily overlooked and don’t really affect the experience.

rudolf_enum,

Because Larian is relatively small compared to Bethesda and the game exceeded the already high expectations, it’s a AAA D&D 5e game, which is something people were looking for for a long time. Larian deserves it, and they are actively fixing the game anyway. Bethesda has no excuses to be releasing games that have the types of bugs that they do after having such giant successes like Skyrim. They have the money.

ShittyRedditWasBetter,

Look I like the game so I’m not trying to say it’s bad in any way but you are just making excuses. Pent up demand doesn’t excuse the bugs. Fuck, they didn’t even need to develop the underlying systems, they already have 5e and the engines.

rudolf_enum,

I’m not making excuses, I’m just saying that Larian deserves to get a free pass on this one for releasing a game that exceeded the already high expectations, not for the demand. And personally, I barely encoutered any bugs in a 90 hour long save…

As for them “already having 5e”, that’s true, but it’s a system that is rather complex and which only gets more complex with higher in-game levels and items which all slightly modify the game - which is easy on tabletop, but I can only imagine what a nightmare it must be to implement this in a computer game. And as far as I know, there aren’t any other computer games that truly implement 5e. Sure, there’s Solasta, but that’s highly modified.

As for the engine: I really don’t see it as a valid point, as they had to massively change and upgrade it between D:OS2 and BG3 anyway, it’s just too different.

decenthuman,

I’m up to about 150 hours in BG3 and I don’t think I’ve seen a single bug.

cheery_coffee, (edited )

I use a Mac and I’ve seen plenty, apart from us being forgotten and the release date pushed back silently twice. For me any dirt ground textures never render.

Larian does a much better job than any other studio, but I paid for the game to play in August at release with my friends, but then they silently dropped the release date and the only viable solution to playing was to pay for GeForce now and stream it.

I’d only be a little annoyed if they communicated their issues.

ShittyRedditWasBetter,

👌👍

BedbugCutlefish,
@BedbugCutlefish@lemmy.world avatar

BG3 was basically unplayable for us for about 2 weeks post 1.0

But also, we really wanted to only play co-op, and the bugs were mostly online related, which is arguably more forgivable.

But still, hard crashing or freezing every 15 minutes for one of the three of us sucked, and looking at support forums, wasn’t uncommon either.

At least 9/10 have in the past, because my thought is that surely I will get to them in a few months well after the refund window.

I leave a few large installed games I don’t play in my library to remind me to pace my purchases. Now I’m down to 3/4 gathering dust!

That said, don’t regret any that I picked up but didn’t end up working out.

That’s surprising. I guess the publisher didn’t get the memo?

ColeSloth,

I just bought Brotato for like $3.74, because I just finished 100%ing Vampire Survivors on my Steam Deck.

Mandatory you should own Stardew Valley by now, and his big v1.6 update finally comes out next week.

Hades is on sale for like $12.50. It’s on sale for $12.50 more than it’s not on sale, really.

Red Dead redemption 2 and two spider man games are also on sale.

Really, it’s a steam sale. Just buy everything that’s at least 40% off till you’re broke. My backlog is probably already bigger than I have years left.
