hperrin,

The driver will work fine, but it won’t update to the latest one in the future without GE. (Windows update might update it, but they’re always several versions behind.)

hperrin,

This is definitely against their ToS, so I would advise against it. That said, do you have any friends or relatives who might be interested? That’s less likely to lead to any negative consequences.

Btw, your original username will always be tied to the account. There’s no way to change that.

hperrin,

That looks like Grand Theft Auto 5. I believe the car in the screenshot is the Dodge Corolla XS.

hperrin,

Oh boy. That’s a headline. A ridiculous, awful headline.

hperrin,

33 times the diameter, volume, or mass?

Nm, it was in the actual headline. The mass is the answer.

hperrin,

There are certain video games that I feel like I’ve outgrown, but I will never outgrow video games as a whole. That’s like saying you’ll outgrow movies.

hperrin,

I’m playing through Pokemon Blue right now. I started when I had knee surgery last year and I just made it back to Pallet Town. Next stop Route 22.

Man this game brings back memories. I first played through on my original Game Boy. So many batteries because I needed that light attachment.

hperrin,

Uh oh. Am I a bad son?

hperrin,

I’m really hoping that Valve releases a new headset by the time my Quest inevitably becomes unusable.

hperrin,

Another really fun category of time bugs is caused by assuming that all days have 24 hours. Daylight Saving Time change days have 23 or 25 hours.

hperrin,

Booo! Nintendo sucks! This was decided 30 years ago. Emulation is not illegal.

hperrin, (edited )

It is not illegal to make copies of games you own and play them on an emulator. That is what was decided by the courts. Nintendo is trying to make that illegal.

They’re using the DMCA to say that because Yuzu lets someone circumvent their encryption (which is illegal, but shouldn’t be), that’s the same as Yuzu circumventing their encryption.

That’s basically like saying VLC should be illegal because it has the capability of copying a DVD.

hperrin,

Yuzu is not infringing on their copyright, some of the users are. Sue the users.

hperrin,

That’s not how the DMCA works, or tons of other software would be illegal. It’s illegal to circumvent copy protection under the DMCA (something I wholeheartedly disagree with), but it’s not illegal to make something that can be used to circumvent copy protection.

In fact, there are exemptions to that provision and one of them states that circumventing copy protection in order to play a video game using assistive technologies is legal.

hperrin,

Can you point me to the provision you’re talking about?

hperrin,

Yes, so distributing the code necessary to perform the decryption is illegal. That’s why you have to hack an actual switch to get the code necessary to perform the decryption (prod.keys). All Yuzu is doing is running that code through an AES library to get the game and emulating a Switch to play it. You can’t make AES libraries illegal just because they can be used to decrypt copy protection.

It’s the same with DVD decryption. VLC is not illegal because it doesn’t include the codes used to decrypt DVDs. Once you have those codes, VLC can copy a DVD for you.

hperrin,

I disagree that the DMCA makes AES libraries illegal.

hperrin,

The exceptions are handled by the Library of Congress and go through a renewal process every three years. Here’s the one from 2021:

www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/…/2021-23311.pdf

The accessibility use exception is on the last page, middle of the page, paragraph labeled 21.

It’s illegal to make something that’s sole purpose is to circumvent copyright. Yuzu does not have that sole purpose, and doesn’t include the code necessary (prod.keys) to even accomplish it.

hperrin,

I don’t know if the two cases are equivalent, DeCSS included all code necessary to decrypt a copy protected DVD.

Yuzu does not include the necessary code to decrypt a Switch game. Users have to either “hack” their own Switch, or pirate the codes. What the users are doing is the illegal part here.

hperrin,

I didn’t say it was. I used it as an example of when circumventing copy protection is allowed under the DMCA.

hperrin,

I’m using code in the sense of the word pass codes. Like, encryption codes. The codes you input to an encryption algorithm, along with the cyphertext, to get the plaintext.

But yes, Nintendo and you are saying that distributing Yuzu is illegal because it can only be used to violate the DMCA.

I disagree.

It can also be used in compliance with the DMCA, and nothing it includes are the intellectual property of Nintendo. There are exceptions to the rule about circumventing copy protection, and as long as you use Yuzu with an intent (such as security research) that falls in one of these exceptions, you can use Yuzu legally.

As long as Yuzu is never distributed by its authors with the encryption codes, it shouldn’t be illegal, even according to the DMCA. Otherwise, there would be no way to circumvent copy protection for legal purposes with regard to Switch games.

hperrin,

But being forced to create an account for basic software features is my favorite part!

Do you find open source games interesting/good thing as a gamer?

@games I am a game developer working on game called Mushy Score. I decided that my niche would be to create open source games. I think these could be helpful for developers or teachers to teach about games and how they are made. Most open source games are small game jam games, but there are few “real games” that are open source like 0 A.D. and Doom. As a non-developer do you think open source games could be good thing?

hperrin,

There are several open source games that I love and have played regularly:

  • Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart
  • Veloren
  • Xonotic
  • Super Tux Kart

I wish more games were open source.

hperrin,

I even have a hard time killing the nazi dogs in Wolfenstein. It’s not his fault he’s a nazi dog. He’s just trying to be a good boy, and his owner is a fucking nazi.

hperrin,

I read that title and thought you were asking where to download cracked versions of games.

hperrin,

My guess is it would look pretty similar, just without the “Mobile” block.

hperrin,

Fun fact: Venus and Mercury wouldn’t have phases if the earth were flat and the sun were small and close.

(At least, they wouldn’t have a “new” phase.)

hperrin,

My super gay PC is better than all consoles because it’s in a same-sex relationship with the toaster. The microwave is a republican, though, so there’s a lot of tension in the kitchen. I’m looking into getting a new microwave that’s less bigoted.

Looking for insight - Games on a school managed Chromebook angielski

So the situation is this: I am a junior high ELA teacher and I want to bring some videogames into the classroom. What I have to work with are the students Chromebooks. At first glance, I figured I’d throw some short, playable without install games on some flash drives and we could play through whatever game it is, and then...

hperrin,

If you can get the Chromebooks to install Linux software, then you can install Lutris. Then you can pop in a USB drive with a Windows game install and run it from there. To make the USB drive you can set the game up on one Chromebook using a folder on the drive as the Wine prefix, then clone it.

hperrin,

For the most part, Linux can run Windows games. The problem is that you need Proton, which may not be available on the Chromebooks.

hperrin,

That’s neat and all, but I’ve been playing these games on an emulator for too long to bother with Nintendo’s subscription emulator. It would have been nice to have this in 2015.

hperrin,

What’s next!? Letting people return a game just because it’s trash?? What is this world coming to?

hperrin,

Depending on how it’s done, it could make the game better or worse, just like any other tool. I imagine there will be a lot of growing pains as devs figure out what works and what doesn’t.

hperrin,

Gosh I feel so sorry for him. Any company that puts this guy in charge, with his reputation, deserves to go down in flames.

hperrin,

My vote was for Horizon, but since I hadn’t played the other games, I just added Titanfall 2 to my wishlist. Next time it’s on sale I’m gonna play it too. :)

hperrin,

Horizon: Zero Dawn is an incredibly good game. The story is amazing. I think you should play it next. I haven’t played any of the other games, though.

hperrin,

You can also tell if a site does this when they have seemingly arbitrary restrictions on passwords that are actually database text field restrictions.

Especially if they have a maximum password length. The maximum password length should be just the maximum length the server will accept, because it should be hashed to a constant length before going into the database.

hperrin,

Yes, reasonable limits are fine, I was talking more like 12 or 13 characters max. That’s probably indicative of a database field limit, and I’ve seen that a fair amount because my password manager defaults to 14 characters.
