Ok I wasn’t try to make a judgement about the price. I’m not really in the market for something like this. I was just curious, and figured others would be too.

boerbiet, do gaming w CD Projekt passes the 'Best DLC' crown to FromSoftware with Witcher-themed Elden Ring art

To me, they are both winners. I loved Phantom Liberty and just started playing it again last week, only for it to be interrupted by Shadow of the Erdtree. Both DLC’s reminded me how much I loved the base game and both are proper and large content additions. And they both run perfectly on Linux on day 1 <3.

Both these games and their DLC’s are in my opinion what other game studios should aim for.

curiousaur,

Um, it’s Blood and Wine, the Wicher 3 DLC that held the crown, not phantom liberty.

Prox,

This was a surprise to me, too. I naturally assumed the author was referencing Phantom Liberty because, y’know… it’s fucking excellent.

curiousaur,

Did you play blood and wine?

Instigate,

Blood and Wine was honestly amazing. I haven’t enjoyed a DLC or xpac that much since Diablo II: Lord of Destruction. I think maybe the Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind’s expansion Bloodmoon was a great contender as well, but Blood and Wine just took Witcher 3 to a new level. It truly deserved its spot at the top of the heap.

halcyoncmdr,
@halcyoncmdr@lemmy.world avatar

Blood and Wine was exceptional. Much like Shadow of the Erdtree, there was enough content added that they could have almost justified releasing it as a full game. There are full games released today with less content than Blood and Wine brought to TW3.

@MeanEYE@lemmy.world avatar

Typical Bugthesda. Am only wondering how did they get this big by only releasing buggy products. I can’t for the life of me remember a single product they have made that wasn’t buggy mess that community fixed for them time and time again without any compensation. Not only that community didn’t get any compensation, Bethesda tried to sell their work and pinch some more money.

flucksy_bango,

Imo, despite the bugs and sometimes because of them, they’re really fun games.

ShittyRedditWasBetter,

Yet larian constantly gets free passes.

Any serious bitching about SF seems to me to be nitpicking from folks who were just looking to bitch at Bethesda. It’s a fantastic game with minor issues that are easily overlooked and don’t really affect the experience.

rudolf_enum,

Because Larian is relatively small compared to Bethesda and the game exceeded the already high expectations, it’s a AAA D&D 5e game, which is something people were looking for for a long time. Larian deserves it, and they are actively fixing the game anyway. Bethesda has no excuses to be releasing games that have the types of bugs that they do after having such giant successes like Skyrim. They have the money.

ShittyRedditWasBetter,

Look I like the game so I’m not trying to say it’s bad in any way but you are just making excuses. Pent up demand doesn’t excuse the bugs. Fuck, they didn’t even need to develop the underlying systems, they already have 5e and the engines.

rudolf_enum,

I’m not making excuses, I’m just saying that Larian deserves to get a free pass on this one for releasing a game that exceeded the already high expectations, not for the demand. And personally, I barely encoutered any bugs in a 90 hour long save…

As for them “already having 5e”, that’s true, but it’s a system that is rather complex and which only gets more complex with higher in-game levels and items which all slightly modify the game - which is easy on tabletop, but I can only imagine what a nightmare it must be to implement this in a computer game. And as far as I know, there aren’t any other computer games that truly implement 5e. Sure, there’s Solasta, but that’s highly modified.

As for the engine: I really don’t see it as a valid point, as they had to massively change and upgrade it between D:OS2 and BG3 anyway, it’s just too different.

decenthuman,

I’m up to about 150 hours in BG3 and I don’t think I’ve seen a single bug.

cheery_coffee, (edited )

I use a Mac and I’ve seen plenty, apart from us being forgotten and the release date pushed back silently twice. For me any dirt ground textures never render.

Larian does a much better job than any other studio, but I paid for the game to play in August at release with my friends, but then they silently dropped the release date and the only viable solution to playing was to pay for GeForce now and stream it.

I’d only be a little annoyed if they communicated their issues.

ShittyRedditWasBetter,

👌👍

BedbugCutlefish,
@BedbugCutlefish@lemmy.world avatar

BG3 was basically unplayable for us for about 2 weeks post 1.0

But also, we really wanted to only play co-op, and the bugs were mostly online related, which is arguably more forgivable.

But still, hard crashing or freezing every 15 minutes for one of the three of us sucked, and looking at support forums, wasn’t uncommon either.

At least 9/10 have in the past, because my thought is that surely I will get to them in a few months well after the refund window.

I leave a few large installed games I don’t play in my library to remind me to pace my purchases. Now I’m down to 3/4 gathering dust!

That said, don’t regret any that I picked up but didn’t end up working out.

ColeSloth,

I just bought Brotato for like $3.74, because I just finished 100%ing Vampire Survivors on my Steam Deck.

Mandatory you should own Stardew Valley by now, and his big v1.6 update finally comes out next week.

Hades is on sale for like $12.50. It’s on sale for $12.50 more than it’s not on sale, really.

Red Dead redemption 2 and two spider man games are also on sale.

Really, it’s a steam sale. Just buy everything that’s at least 40% off till you’re broke. My backlog is probably already bigger than I have years left.

Anonymousllama, (edited ) do games w Unity warns of likely layoffs following runtime fee decision

Used unity for my last 3 games and I’m getting really really tired of their shithouse performance over the last 3-4 years. They’ve gone from constantly making new features, tutorials and systems to barely doing anything.

Engines need constant feature packed updates, not bare bones rubbish. For example there’s no DLSS support for URP, it only works in HDRP. There’s also “no plans” for it according to the devs, which boggles the mind considering URP is arguably the better platform for mobile, console and regular console gaming.

Game engines should be rapidly evolving and supporting these features, they should take 3-4 years to get commonly implements features or to have to rely on third party plugins to make them happen.

SandLight,

Yeah, I hate that my game is far enough along that it would be… infeasible to restart development in a new engine, but still needs enough work that the uncertainty of Unity is going to be with me for quite some time still.

Fuck Nintendo. Going after emulators then trying to resell 20 year old games.

smeg,

When have Nintendo actually gone after emulators? ROM distributors, sure, but all the emulators are still widely available.

RudestBuddhist,

Valve’s legal department contacted Nintendo to inquire about the announced release of Dolphin Emulator on Steam. In reply to this, a lawyer representing Nintendo of America requested Valve prevent Dolphin from releasing on the Steam store, citing the DMCA as justification. Valve then forwarded us the statement from Nintendo’s lawyers, and told us that we had to come to an agreement with Nintendo in order to release on Steam. Considering the strong legal wording at the start of the document and the citation of DMCA law, we took the letter very seriously.

smeg,

Ooh I wondered what the actual story behind that was, it was all speculation at the time. Is that a statement from Dolphin themselves?

RudestBuddhist,

Yep it’s on their blog

smeg,

Oh wow, I can’t believe I missed this! (Link for anyone else who also missed Dolphin’s response

I’m now annoyed that I heard huge amounts of baseless speculation at the time but then nothing about this well-presented conclusion of the whole issue. I’d say that technically Nintendo still aren’t ‘going after emulation’ as they know they don’t have any legal leg to stand on, so that stern letter is all they can really do!

billiam0202,

I wish Nintendo still sold old games. This is selling old games as a service.

I won’t argue with Arcane being where it is, because that animation was amazing, especially that Jinx vs Ekko fight scene, but TLOU definitely need to be placed higher. I’d reorder most of the list - right choices, slightly off ranking.

I distanced myself from Riot and anything concerning it, but I watched Arcane because of the animation. Then the writing ended up being damn good too.

Having difficulty on a second watch though. Don't know why.

    Skies5394,

The argument they made is complete shit too, saying that it’s basically just a a shot for shot remake of the cutscenes.

Hey now, don’t count out that Dragon Age anime about Cassandra!

    brsrklf, (edited )

Long ago I watched the anime based on Tales of Eternia (the Namco “Tales of” game that was also called Tales of Destiny 2 in the US for no good reason, it’s not a sequel).

The anime is awkwardly shoehorned in a very specific and inconsequential part of the game (like, one that would last about 2 minutes). Nothing meaningful really happens in the series. Because of the way it’s framed, I also estimate its entertainment value for someone who didn’t play the game at basically zero.

Oh yeah, there’s a freaking swimming contest out of nowhere at one point. Women only of course. I’m sure it had nothing to do with having female characters in swimsuits for a while.

That certainly was one of the anime series of all time.

CH3DD4R_G0BL1N, do games w Helldivers 2 gets its first rebalance patch
    @CH3DD4R_G0BL1N@sh.itjust.works avatar

Not gonna lie, I’m a little concerned after this patch. I don’t think it’s entirely unfair to make comparisons to the first game seeing as it’s a sequel (up to you to agree/disagree). But with this patch especially, the philosophy differences between the two are becoming more apparent.

In 1, there was almost no primary that was useless altogether. Certainly no support or AT that was useless. And even at the high levels the armor spam wasn’t as ridiculous and we had more reliable tools to deal with it.

If they want things to be harder, why did they change the reinforce system to be objectively easier? That system change is my single biggest 1>2 gripe.

This after seeing one of the devs back this balance patch by constantly (and imo not so professionally, but I’m a boomer like that I guess) on Discord chide people not happy about the changes to “just go play an idle game” if they want an easy power fantasy cake walk.

Like I said, major concerns for me. The response to this will tell the tale. I never could get into DRG primarily because they seemed to prioritize difficulty balancing way over having fun in combat. Same thing with Deadlink which should have been a fave of mine. I really hope to not see HD2 go that route when I’ve touted HD1 as one of my faves and a contender for best coop game of all time for years now.

    Sylvartas,

And even at the high levels the armor spam wasn’t as ridiculous and we had more reliable tools to deal with it.

We have very different memories of this game. I remember the tanks spam at higher levels was even more egregious than in HD2. However I do agree that the anti amor options were basically all better. Especially in the stratagems department
