Delphia,

Mechwarrior online.

Free, online “shooter”, good community, runs on linux, gameplay is dated and doesnt get tons of dev support anymore but its still how I kill an evening once or twice a week.

Delphia,

This has always been my counterpoint for the Nintendo haters when they complain about price. (Although they are a shit company in several other ways) Because when my daughter wants a new switch game if its a top tier Nintendo title its going to be a finished game with zero bugs and zero concern about problematic content for me.

Delphia,

This is what cracks me up about this topic literally every time it comes up.

Everyone on highly tech savvy and linux loving lemmy not being able to wrap their heads around the idea that busy parents dont want to have to tech support their kids game console. They want to be able to tell Grandma “He has a switch 2 and wants the new pokemon game for his birthday”, they want to walk into stores and buy accessories that WILL fit and they dont want microtransaction laden shit. One of the FEW things I still respect about Nintendo is that their AAA in house releases are FULL games (for the price, they would fucking want to be).

The 6 to 12yo market alone is probably enough to make the switch worthwhile from a business perspective. The “just tech savvy enough to work facebook” crowd adds in the profit margins.

Delphia,

I think you’re definitely right about the adoption speed, people wont be dumping their switches en masse to buy a 2.

The Deck definitely puts a dent in their sales but “i DoNt gEt wHy aNyOnE wOuld bUy a sWitCh” comments on Lemmy show just how skewed the demographics are on here. Its not aimed at us.

Delphia,

You cant pirate pussy, and we all know how gamers feel about subscription models.

Deep Rock Galactic roguelike dev says innovation for innovation's sake is too expensive to survive: "We're a studio of 50 people with bills to pay" (www.gamesradar.com) angielski

“It sounds weird but we try to keep our innovation as low as possible,” the director explained. “We’ll say ‘it’s this game but with that.’ It takes so much time to innovate. Sometimes you find the hidden holy Grail of game design, but often indie developers sit for five years trying out stuff. We’re a studio of...

Delphia,

I asked a friend who plays it and he says its good with randoms, but great if you have a crew you regularly game with.

Delphia,

20 million divided by 1.7 is about $11 per person, which isnt really that high.

I also think theres a distinction to be made between microtransactions in f2p titles and microtransactions in AAA premium titles. I logged something like 4000 hours in Mechwarrior online and I bought mech packs because I wanted to support the devs.

Delphia,

Not too long after it came out I was good at Siege and I mean good I was ranked in the top 1000 players and I thought that was pretty badass. I got a DM from some guy who was like “Hey I’m from TEAM and we wanted to know if you wanted to try out for our Siege squad?” I said thanks but no thanks, I have a mortgage and a full time and then some job. I dont want to take on the obligation.

I then went and googled the team, I was being courted by serious professional players. I still decided I didnt want that headache but as someone who has always been an underachiever it was like an IRL achievement popup or a level up notification. Like… look what I can achieve when I actually give a fuck and put the work in.

Delphia,

My prediction is that sony and microsoft will have benchmarks 3rd party devices have to hit in order to buy a “PS6 Compatable” logo for their product. So you can buy a Msi Claw 3 or whatever, sign into the PSN and shop the sony catalogue.

Delphia,

Ive had companies call my mom over stuff because the last known contact information they found for me was from when I was still living with my parents. Literally years after I moved out.

The “A.I” excuse stuff reads like bullshit. The mom call might just be old information.

Popular Female Skyrim Modder Has Abandoned Her Work Due to Daily Harrassment (www.gamesradar.com)

I think gamers as a whole, though specifically those in niche communities, need to take a long and hard look at themselves. We should celebrate the volunteers that create wonderful content for us, generally with no financial gain. Instead, commonly, there are communities that criticize and tear down every little thing they can...

Delphia,

I put wheels on my car which are a cheap copy of a very popular wheel because they were $500 not $2000 and I dont race. Every car meet someone has to comment that Im running “fakes” and try to give me a hard time about it. Yeah, Ive got a mortgage and a kid. Fuck off with your Supreme snapback ass hypebeast bullshit. I’m building the car I can afford.

People are toxic, even communities who preach peace and love as their doctrine have people who will whip out the moral-cock ruler and start shit over who is more peaceful and loving.

Delphia,

NFS Underground 2. I will pay full price on preorder to EA.

Thats 3 promises broken at once.

Delphia,

Because Nintendo games on Nintendo handhelds almost never go wrong and you know what parents love? Their kids shit always just working. You dont have to check the system specs, you buy the game at the store and it WORKS. You wrap the game under a tree at Xmas, you can tell grandma “Nintendo Switch” and while she might pick something shit, its going to work.

Lemmings love to act like they are enlightened for figuring out the Steam deck is better… its not for you. Its for 5 to 10 year olds.

Delphia,

“Vampire says people are being selfish not wanting to be fed on.”

Delphia,

They do damn near 10/10 work when they give a fuck, Thats probably the worst part.

Siege was damn near perfect as a tactical competitive shooter for the first few years. The Division was great, Just Cause was enormous fun and so on.

The problem is they hit a winner, and then milk it and milk it and milk it until we hate it or them.

Delphia,

Yes it was. It was so frigging good.

Delphia,

Yeah, that sounds like some pretty fair demands.

Delphia,

A lot of people will still parrot the launch criticisms at you and refuse to acknowledge that they pretty well fixed it. The devs overpromised and underdelivered, even now its not quite what they promised. But if they had dropped what the game is now on release it would be pretty universally regarded as one of the best games of all time.

Delphia,

I played it on a fairly ninja pc so I cant comment on if it was absolutely fixed on consoles.

Delphia,

It might become a cult terrible movie. I think thats its only hope.

Ill watch it at some point, but I wont be paying.

Delphia,

You’re right. Everythings fucked, why try at all lets just roll over and take it.

Delphia,

As the parent of a small child I wish I could boycott Nintendo.

Delphia,

Another year or two…

Problem is that Nintendo for all their faults still make GREAT games for kids. And if adult pc gamers think they have it bad they should have a look at the predatory shitshow that is tablet games for the 5 and under market… its properly fucking ridiculous. At least Nintendo has the common decency to give me an amazing and full game for its eyewatering prices.

Delphia,

The problem with event sec (and I ran large events for a decade) is that organisers often dont treat you like you’re anything but a bunch of fuckwits and dont tell you anything about planned stunts or anything beyond “Dont let anyone past this point without a pass” asking questions and wanting to be in the loop often gets you told to “do your job” which is why I was very anal retentive about what was and wasnt our responsibility in our contracts and what we were/werent liable for. Often the “talent” or people attending will decide they want to do something off script and you have to take a moment to decide wether or not to crash tackle someone somewhere they shouldnt be who might also be a keynote speaker or the headlining artists manager… its almost always a shitshow of not enough info. I have a lovely story about a bass player for a band not wearing a lanyard and starting a fight with two of the security when they wouldnt let him back stage… theres an NDA involved though because he broke one staff members cheekbone before getting knocked the fuck out.

The absolutely idiotic part was taking him to the ground, that outnumbered and not being aggressive it was unnecessary. Once it goes to the ground it almost always turns into a shitshow.

Delphia,

I kind of feel you on this. I can build amazing things, find cool ships, kit out my freighter, and all that lovely stuff but theres no point to it. Theres no evil empire to fight, no galaxy to save, no dungeons to raid. Its a great sandbox, but not a lot of reason to be in it after a while.

Delphia,

What would be really cool would be if they made a companion game that took the work you do in NMS and ported that character into a combat game.

Delphia,

Ive commented on this before, as sad as it is if we want innovative, expansive, beautiful AAA titles we have to accept that investors arent going to keep backing the money truck up on maybes. Microtransactions, subscriptions, dlcs… there has to be an ongoing income stream or an absolutely eyewatering launch price OR we get used to safer and safer bets or games with very narrow scopes.

Delphia,

I think you have to ask yourself if the company is behaving ethically.

If a game is F2P but has microtransactions that arent P2W and the devs are continuing to maintain the game then its hard to be mad that they want to make some money off the basic game you get for free. (Mechwarrior online is a pretty good example of this)

If its a subscription, are you getting regular additional content for the money or is the subscription just allowing you to play the game you paid for? Do you still have to buy DLCs and pay subscription?

If its DLC, is it meaningful storylines/maps/characters? Does it make the prospect of another playthrough different or more interesting? Is it a reasonable price for what it gives you?

Delphia,

Thank you so fucking much.

If you want the game to have long term viability, you have to have nerfs. Otherwise in 3 years everyone who has been playing since day 1 has a mech with a gattling cannon that fires nukes and is fighting gods.

Delphia,

Agreed, Agreed and they still shouldnt have done it. Sometimes I say shit I know I shouldnt to customers because they are being assholes. They complain, the boss tells me off, I say “Fair enough” and I dont do it again for a while. But I know when I say the thing I shouldnt that “I’m gonna get a talking to for this” fortunately I’m government employed and I’m union so I know that a little backtalk isnt going to result in outright dismissal.

Ultimately the company could have turned around and sacked them all because I’m sure the company has a social media policy that basically says “if you do anything we dont like, we can fire you” and they would have had to fight it. They took a risk and I’m glad they didnt get fired (yet) but with all the layoffs in this space at the moment I wouldnt have.

Delphia,

It hurts my soul so much that EA have the Need for Speed series. They are dumb and idiotic, but they are my dumb and idiotic and I have to guve money to EA…

Delphia,

This is how it happens. If they dont staff to meet the demand the game suffers and dies out, if they do in a few years when the player base falls off and they announce layoffs everyone makes the shocked Pikachu face.

Delphia,

You should teaach him about your username.

Delphia,

Also I couldnt figure out how to change the controls on any of them. So your stuck with whatever some chode decided the control system should be.

Delphia,

Mobile gaming has become too money hungry. The OG Angry Birds and Plants Vs Zombies games were enormously fun. They were worth buying. But now I wouldnt touch them with a 10 foot pole with all the microtransactions.

Kimd of funny story though, back when R6 came out I was a seriously good competitive player, but I started to take it a little too seriously and I had pretty bad emotional control skills back then so I decided to cool it and play something else for a while. I decided to play Angry Birds again for a while and just goof. Well I got talking to one of my wifes workmates husbands at a thing and he was like “Im a GAMER!” I said yeah, me too and he got all enthusiastic and asked what I was playing now I said “Ah Im playing Angry Birds right now, I was pla-” and the guy went full 4chan copypasta autist and started giving me a lecture about how that isnt gaming and if I was a real gamer like him Id play something like Siege. “Really, maybe I should get it and you can show me a thing or two” so I got his deets and added him on steam… and I spent an evening casually steamrolling his ass across every map we played while he gradually got less and less condescending over chat as he figured out it wasnt luck and I really was just casually making him look like a total scrub. When he was like “Im gonna go for the night man, have a good one” I just said “Yeah, catch you… Im just gonna play some Angry Birds before bed”

Delphia,

Its overhyped so far.

Delphia,

Im genuinely of the opinion that GPU manufacturers need to take a gap year. Stop prioritising in game performance development and focus on efficiency and cost for just 12 months.

Actually Id be happy if consumer PC hardware as a whole went this way for just a little bit.

Delphia,

Hey in all honesty good on you for being an early adopter, someone has to. The first cars were not much of an upgrade over the horse and buggy either.

I wouldnt touch the 40 series, it feels like a stopgap. Theres a lot going on with AI cores and frame generation and new methods that arent just “raw power” processing. I think all this frame gen and ray tracing and so on is going to come together in the next series.

Delphia,

Jagged Alliance 3.

Love me some turn based, action point, squad combat action. Theres some flaws and its a bit limited in a few ways, but its a solid title.

Wish the genre got more love.

Delphia,

I read the article and thats pretty much the case.

Provided you buy Nvidia.

Delphia,

Because the largest gaming GPU manufacturer in the world says so. Unfortunately they have the clout to drive this narrative to devs who will accommodate them because devs dont want their game to look like shit on an Nvidia gpu.

I think that these technologies are still very new. Nvidia arent going to let us know what their skunkworks is up to and what the next generation of the tech is going to look like.

I live in hope.

Delphia,

Yeah I played it earlier this year and no complaints, it was a great game.

Delphia,

The intro/prologue is a bit slow and dense. I had to convince a friend who got bored and gave up to slog through it and get to the open game.

He loved it by the time he finished it.

Delphia,

Why would you make an offensive section? Thats not offensive, its inclusive.
