VERTICAL STAND SOLD SEPARATELY

That’s kinda lame. The original one came with that. They wanna charge you extra for a plastic circle (and maybe the screw)? They’re already reducing the amount of plastic needed by reducing the size of the console. Pass that savings onto the customer and give us the fucking plastic circle!

It’s 190 GB. WTF!?

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Yeah, what? It takes up 110GB less on PS5. Are the textures bigger? Is there more content? Or is it simply uncompressed?

UndercoverUlrikHD,
@UndercoverUlrikHD@programming.dev avatar

PS5 is way better at decompression, so the textures are likely less compressed for better performance. Most likely the PC version will ship with higher resolution textures which would play a bigger role though.

Pyr_Pressure,

I don’t understand why it takes so long for a PC version.

Were they not making it at the same time as the PlayStation version? Were they waiting to see if it was a success before starting?

Or were they simply milking it on PlayStation first to make sure PC sales didn’t interfere with PlayStation sales?

domi,
@domi@lemmy.secnd.me avatar

Guerrilla doesn’t do their own PC ports, they are handed to a company called Nixxes and I assume they only start working after everything including DLCs is out of the door and they are free.

Plus $$$, games released later on PC often are bought twice. Once on console and again on PC. I own two copies of most of the best games on PS4…

I know I have a problem…

Zahille7,

I just finished it last week myself. It felt a little clunky at times, but I started to get into it after a little while.

olmec, do games w PlayStation Blog: New Look for PS5 console this holiday season

I first, I thought this was consolidating the line to a single SKU, and letting you add the drive yourself for a small premium. Instead, this looks like this is a new model with a reworking interior to save a bit on cost, and heat/power.

The one good thing, is that now every PS5 is a “Physical Edition.” It is also way more likely in the decades to come you can get a 3rd party drive, and hack it to work. Without the size or soldiering being an issue, it is more likely we can see 3rd party replacements.

johnthedoe,

That’s what I thought too. If I was getting one now id be inclined to get the digital plus add on drive so the drive is more replaceable.

I was trying to wait for the slim but got an og a few months ago during a really good sale. I’m not too bummed about it as I thought it’d be slimmer.

BorgDrone,

This is just a first step into finally getting rid of physical media.

It makes the digital-only version more attractive: it’s cheaper and you don’t really risk not having a drive as you can always add it later if you really need it.

Lots of people will get the cheaper version and never get the drive. Then in a year or two they will quietly stop selling the drive due to low demand. For PS6, they will leave out the optical drive because the majority of PS5 owners didn’t have an optical drive anyway.

It’s also low-risk for Sony, they now get a good picture of the demand for physical media, if they miscalculated they can just keep selling the drive.

UrLogicFails, do gaming w PlayStation’s first Remote Play dedicated device, PlayStation Portal remote player, to launch later this year at $199.99

Personally, I don’t see any draw over just using a Kishi style controller with your phone.

Even if you wanted a standalone device. It would be cheaper to buy a cheap phone to go with the controller, and then you could use it for local emulation.

I wish it had the WiiU style connection (instead of going through WiFi), since at least then it could be used for interesting asymmetric multiplayer games, or multiplayer games without screen splitting. Maybe they’ll add that down the line, though…

acastcandream,

This thing has the haptics. Your phone will at most have rumble. Not saying that’s a $200 issue worth solving lol but it is all the haptics of the controller as well as a remote player. If it also has virtually no latency then maybe I’d consider it. But I have never seen a device besides the Wii-U tablet pull that off.

UrLogicFails,

I think it has the reactive triggers too, but as you said, that doesn’t feel like a 200USD feature.

I am hopeful they might introduce a WiiU style connection down the line, since if I recall correctly it just needed a 5GHz WiFi connection and I am fairly positive both devices have the appropriate antenna for that (though it would limit their 5G WiFi connectivity while in use). Maybe they could implement it through a wired connection, too. This would be less convenient than wireless, but would certainly have lower latency. Having said that, until they announce a low latency connection, I wouldn’t count on it.

hogart,
@hogart@feddit.nu avatar

The WiiU tablet wasnt very portable. Once you left the room where your WiiU Base was plugged into a TV it started acting up. You basically had to be in the same room but not he allowed to use the TV. I’m afraid that type of technology probably hasn’t moved forward fast enough to try anything else but wifi. It’s a sad day.

At least you can use these as a more expensive controller as well, right? To play with your friends on the tv. Surely? Right?

acastcandream,

Oh i know the range isn’t great but it’s easily good enough for you to play, for instance, in your bed or somewhere comfy. I was just speaking to latency.

hogart,
@hogart@feddit.nu avatar

I actually couldn’t. Oh well, it’s in the past anyways :)

They really missed the mark not supporting cloud streaming. I was considering getting one if it could do that, as it would be pretty handy while away from home. But £200 for a remote play device is way too much. Playstation just can’t seem to do portables very well

UrLogicFails,

Cloud streaming would be a nice feature, especially since you can get it using the unofficial PSPlay app; but it would probably require a mobile data connection (and I’m not sure how much data it would use, honestly).

So I see why they wouldn’t include the cloud streaming feature, but as you said, it feels pretty feature light without it.

JillyB,

Am I reading it right that it has to be on the same wifi network as a PS5? So it isn’t even portable beyond your house?
