Baldurs Gate 3 anyone? I’m kind of shocked to not see it in here. I’ve never enjoyed a game more. Only sad thing is that there won’t be official dlcs or expansions… But then again there’s mod support! Other than that I really enjoy EU IV after 2k hours, but all-time-favorite? I don’t think so.

Don’t know about 90s, but Jet Set Willy was pretty great in the 80s

Funny, I went blind into RDR2 and, not knowing about John’s story, the epilogues felt so weird and out of place. I still can’t really get into his story, maybe because on a subconscious level it feels like it broke the closure I had from Arthur’s. But yeah, RDR2 really is a fantastic game. They nailed pretty much everything.

I could totally see how not knowing about John’s story would break the closure from Arthur’s if you weren’t aware. But yeah, i agree, it’s really fantastic

Mega Man X. The first one for SNES.

It was such an evolutionary leap forward from the previous MM games. Everything was bigger and better. The graphics, the music, the controls. It blew my mind at the time.

Rhynoplaz,

Sigma before the kids started saying it. 😂

cccrontab,

I spent so many hours on this game. Probably replayed it hundreds of times. The boss battles were so epic. SIGMA! And then discovering the secret shouryuken move from Street Fighter! Wow!

rothaine,

The soundtrack is absolute fire

If it’s got platformer elements, then it’s a platformer, right? Yes? Then Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is it for me.

I won’t say it’s my favorite, but I didn’t see it mentioned, yet, and it definitely deserves at least one mention: Earthworm Jim

Kelly,

If it’s got platformer elements, then it’s a platformer, right?

Yes!

But I also argue that the second half of '89 counts as 90’s and that Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap was the best platformer I played in first half of the decade.

Donkey Kong Country 2 will always be the pinnacle of 2D Platforming, though Yoshi’s Island comes in a close second place.

Coyote_sly,

Agreed. Peak platforming.

Thank you so much for putting this together. I really do look forward to reading these! Must take so much work prepping and finding this, but man it’s just great.

I’m the weirdo who thinks that writing these up is just the most fun I could have. Last year I did these weekly on Reddit, and I missed it a lot when I left that site. So…I’m so glad there are people here who enjoy these. I’m so glad I returned to Lemmy!

Yep we really do love them. Hopefully persons keep up the engagement on your posts. And also, hoping we’ll get some more to help create content in this exciting sphere. Thanks for what you do and glad you get a kick out of this! I’ll explore how I can try to help create some content too that inspires me. Something I can nerd out about as well!

With endless replay. Rollercoaster Tycoon 1&2. Shout out to Open RCT (sim city 3000 is a close second)

Console favourite- The Legend of Zelda Links Awakening

Sound track - Chrono Trigger

That long play (where you forget what you were doing if you put the game down) - Metroid Fusion/Prime

Pokemon - Emerald or Soul Silver depending on my mood.

+1 on the Max Payne mention…great game!

Came out near the time of my favorite PC game, Unreal Tournament.

As far as arcade games, I’d say maybe Rygar or Dragon’s Lair…but those are so old (like I am) that I might not be remembering them so well?

GooberEar, do gaming w I'm doing my part (unfortunately)

…yet.

It’s my retirement plan. Buy the games now when they’re on sale with the intention that one day, perhaps when I retire at 80, I’ll have a plethora of time on my hands to finally play all the games in my backlog except I’m certain that I’ll be so senile by then that I’ll probably end up playing the same one over and over for what seems like the very first time each time I fire it up.

Sonic 2 or Sonic CD depending on the day for me

VerilyFemme, do games w Favourite 90s platformer?

Super Mario Bros 3. It barely makes the cutoff, releasing jn 1990 in North America. But man, it is something special. I completely understand why people prefer Mario World, but Mario 3 feels like the peak of the 2d franchise for me, and everything after that is just reiterating what it perfected.

Sonic 2 and Crash Bandicoot 3 are up there, too. The first time I played Crash especially, my mind was blown. There are several games that scratch the same itch as Mario and Sonic, but I’ve not found a single game that feels like Crash Bandicoot. Gamers were spoiled in the 90s. …unless you bought from a company that wasn’t Nintendo or Sony.

Sonic 2. It came bundled with a lot of Sega Genesis consoles.

A fantastic game that you can technically complete in a sitting.
