Vodulas,

Finally got an invite to Deadlock. After watching a let’s play and messing around with different heroes in the Hero Sandbox, I think there is just too much. I know it is a MOBA shooter combo, but between the movement mechanics, skills, and item shop, it just kinda seems they added stuff just because other titles in either genre have them. I might still give it a few matches, but it definitely dropped in priority.

Been playing through Raft again with my partner, and that’s been a blast. I love a survival crafter, and realized she had not played since the full release. Kinda a cozy survival game if that is even a thing. The only downside isn’t it has been moving our normal sleep schedule later, and we need to move it earlier bee laugh sweat emoji

Vodulas,

I’ll for sure have to see how it plays out in match. Part of it is I also am not a fan of MOBAs, and Deadlock seems to pull a lot from them. We were also looking for a game that my partner could play kinda like Overwatch, bit I think she’ll bounce pretty hard off Deadlock.

Vodulas,

And I don’t think gun control is even a campaign promise. Just shows either lack of forethought or lack of understanding from their campaign

Vodulas,

I tried to play Alien Isolation but I kept getting game breaking bugs

I tried the gamepass and PS5 version and ran into the same game breaker. It is such a shame since it is supposed to be fantastic.

Vodulas,

Somehow replied to my own comment. Good thing I am actively drinking coffee. Yeah, although it makes me wonder if the game pass version isn’t basically the console version. They do some weird stuff with required windows processes.

Vodulas,

Night in the Woods was such a standout game. I started to watch a let’s play, realized that it was going to be fantastic, stopped the let’s play, played the game, then finished the let’s play to see their reactions. If you like wholesome let’s plays, I highly recommend PlayFrame. Here is their Night in the Woods play list

Vodulas, (edited )

I love both Subnauticas, but there are really only 2.5 things this tells us:

  1. Giant hermit crabs exist
  2. Likely multiplayer

2.5. Maybe giant squids?

I am super excited either way

Vodulas,

Below Zero had far less open ocean, and far less just inky blackness. Plus I think if you played the original, you have an idea of what to expect. Nothing compares to dread of seeing a Leviathan come up from total darkness in the first one.

Vodulas,

For sure one of the scariest moments in a video game.

PC Gamer: The top 100 PC games (www.pcgamer.com)

Quite a good list, although without any real surprises, except for the cheeky inclusion of a recent fan-made PC port. I’m glad Kerbal Space Program is on it, but a few other personal favorites (and candidates for best game of all time) are absent, like The Talos Principle, BeamNG.drive, NEO Scavenger, World of Goo, Mafia,...

Vodulas, (edited )

The Overwatch 2 update was pretty widely hated, so that might be clouding things. I supposed they did put Destiny 2 on there though. It is for sure weird to not see FFVII or an Arkham game. Or hell, Dishonored.

Edit: Whoops missed Dishonored 2.

Vodulas,

I’m not AI and I really dislike Factorio. I would say it is a bit of a niche game, but Rimworld also seems niche. Probably just not to anyone at PC Gamer’s taste.

Vodulas,

All lists like this are incredibly subjective and by definition about engagement. I wouldn’t call it bait, but it was definitely created for engagement. That is not necessarily a bad thing since it can generate some fun discussions.

Vodulas,

KOTOR 2 on the list instead of KOTOR is an odd choice, but I do not hate it. With the missing content mod, that game is great

Vodulas,

No, just saying it would not have made my top 100 list. Seemed like a funny thing to say it is an AI list because of not having Factorio

Vodulas,

Oh, totally. But the folks making the list might not even have thought of it if none of them play it.

Vodulas,

Good, because it is number 90

Vodulas,

Nah, it is a long list. I missed Dishonored 2 on there.

Vodulas,

They set a rule that only one game from a series can be on the list. Half-Life 2 probably just beat 1 in the very subjective scoring.

Vodulas,

There are not even 10 bad games on that list. Might not be to your taste, but that does not make them shit

Vodulas,

True. They did mention Doom and Doom: Eternal as being different enough to warrant both. Don’t think that is true for BG2 and BG3 though

Vodulas,

What if I told you I find Valheim to be just fine, so I am surprised it is on this list? The subjectiveness of enjoying a game is a very large spectrum

Vodulas,

Prey kinda kicked off the immersive genre. I think the thing folks are not getting is that this is not a best game of all time list, even though they say “100 best.” It is a “100 Favorite Games of the PC Gamer Staff” list. It is going to be different than anyone’s exact taste. There are a ton of games on there that I think would not be in my top 100, but I am not mad or confused about it. It’s just something someone else is into.

Vodulas,

I am not into rhythm games at all and I liked Hi-Fi Rush. Just a fun game in general

Vodulas,

Interesting. Wonder how much Denuvo costs to offset that 20%. I also wonder if there is a way to control for people that won’t buy a game with Denuvo at all.

Vodulas,

Hard to tell what percentage of year one revenue that would be.

Vodulas,

Only if that 20% loss in revenue is 100% of people that pirate the game.

Vodulas,

People that would not buy the game that will pirate it once it is cracked vs people that could not wait and just bought instead of pirating it. The people that would wait until it is cracked would pirate it immediately if it was cracked before the 3 months but will also wait to pirate it if it is not cracked in that 3 months.

Vodulas,

No, you said:

I guess that puts to rest the “I wasn’t going to buy that game anyway…” nonsense.

My point is that there are still people that were never going to buy the game outside that 20% of lost revenue.

Vodulas,

Sure, but it doesn’t blow the statement out of the water. You would have to find out how many times a game was pirated, then compare that to the extra copies sold that make up that 20%. Plus, not everyone who pirates games says that.

Vodulas,

And the cool cutscenes are skippable even on your first time encountering the boss (great for multiple play throughs). The one run back I can remember being annoying is Rennala.

Vodulas,

Not everyone can sit down and read for very long, some people want something to listen to while they do other things, some people learn better in audio format, and some people just like watching videos. It’s fine if it is not your jam, but that is no reason to denigrate someone choosing to watch a video instead of reading an article.

Vodulas,

Yup. It is just needlessly aggressive and gatekeepy.

Vodulas,

This is not about the politics of the company or whether or not the people support the government. Influence is not the point. This is about material support to the Russian government. Money spent on the game goes to the Russian government in the form of taxes. This blurb says it in plain text:

To put it crudely, an average gamer, who buys Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 for $59.99, helps the company to fund the Russian army with almost $12

Vodulas,

The russian people still deserve to earn a wage, to pay for their necessities

While I can’t say that Saber for sure works this way, but every studio I know of pays a salary, and the sales of the game don’t factor in (with the exception of bonuses and maybe shady practices around contracted QA). The article even states they are busy working on their next game, so those people are currently being paid.

I don’t believe anyone is calling out the employees in this situation. I think the difference is agency. I can choose whether or not to spend money on the game, thereby choosing whether or not to send money to the Russian government. A Russian employee does not have that choice, much like people in the US don’t have a choice to pay taxes that fund a genocide. People buying leisure items do have that choice, though.

Vodulas,

I have excellent news: you can also not buy games from those companies too.

Vodulas,

Adding to that, sometimes those lines are things you know of and would like to not cross, but are impossible to avoid.

Vodulas,

it’s no different than buying something made (in whole or part) in China giving tax money to the CCP to further Uighur genocide in Xinjiang

The difference for me is that while I do try to avoid those things, it is not possible a lot of times. I can avoid buying a game 100% of the time. They are essentially a luxury item.

Vodulas,

I don’t know if I would call it horror, but Dredge is fantastic with creeping dread

did you hear that Dr Disrespect tried to make a comeback the other day with a Deadlock stream? (beehaw.org) angielski

[alt text: several screenshots of posts on twitter. The bottom post is a tweet from @DrDisrespect on twitter, which says, “LIVE in 30 minutes. I just installed Deadlock… what the hell is this game? If it’s from Valve, I must know. I must… understand the future of multiplayer gaming.” This Dr Disrespect tweet is a...

Vodulas,

He was DMing a minor on twitch and there were sexual messages involved. From what I understand Twitch’s law enforcement consultant did not refer it to law enforcement for unknown reasons and they just banned him instead. Probably just creep behavior and nothing technically illegal. Still fucked up, but nothing that would get him arrested. He did not end up meeting with the victim AFAIK.

Vodulas,

He went to either Rumble or Kick. Not sure which, but both are pretty heavy into low moderation.

Edit: Never mind, he is on YouTube but without monetization

Vodulas,

Unknown reason that have not been stated. I was 100% speculating, but that does not make it not super gross and creepy.

Vodulas,

We have that he was banned from twitch. When somebody bringing in that much money for Twitch, you know what they did was bad. Keep defending a shitass though. I’m sure that’ll go great for you

Vodulas,

You can choose your IRL family too, just takes a little more work to drop the shitty people.

Vodulas,

Not sure if I am reading this wrong, but I think it is just the one that did the cheating and game owner that get banned

If a family member gets banned for cheating while playing your copy of a game, you (the game owner) will also be banned in that game. Other family members are not impacted.

Emphasis mine

The Eurogamer 100 - 100 best games to play right now (www.eurogamer.net)

Not a particularly interesting article necessarily, but I wanted to share this as the list is actually quite good in my opinion, and it’s laid out very nicely. It’s one page that’s very easy to scroll through. Might find some things you havent played!

Vodulas,

Huh, I never thought of it as obscure. I wonder if it is just the fact that I have weird friends so was exposed to their tastes.
