This was a really awesome read. I appreciate the work you do. This brings me back to some of the older days when k actually enjoyed checking out game journalism. Do let me know if there’s something I could do to support your work :)

Oh my gosh, that’s very kind of you!!! I’m just glad you enjoyed it, because I love writing these!

It’s far too kind of you to even refer to this in the same sentence as game journalism :P

Wandersong! You play as a Bard who has to save the world through music and singing. Minimal combat and absolutely wonderful storyline that will make you cry tears of joy.

A bit of a wilder rec would be Cassette Beasts, which is basically Pokémon but better and has really nice optional romances. Very combat focused tho.

Cassette Beasts is great. So great I got the OST on both Vinyl… And cassette tape, of course 😆.

Never tried Wandersong, gonna have to add it to my playlist.

Detren,

Haha hell yeah. The OST for cassette beasts is an all timer. The devs behind Wandersong also just released a monster catching game called Beastball if you want some more indie pokemon fix. Haven’t tried it yet but I heard great things.

Lmao. That’s my character’s arms from the debug cam. I forgot to say that I used it there too. I was going to point out that you can see my character

I’m a fan of taking turns “driving” for slower paced logic or puzzle games. Titles that come to mind:

  • Myst
  • Curse of the Golden Idol
  • Summertime Madness
  • Chants of Sennar
  • Superliminal
  • Viewfinder
  • Baba is You

I can highly recommend all of these as they almost universally benefit from more minds working on them together. I would say Baba is the only one that gets REALLY challenging, but there are good mind and logic bending puzzles throughout them all!

EDIT: I’ll also add that Myst, Golden Idol, and Chants of Sennar (Summertime Madness maybe a little) all benefit from solid note taking and map making This provides a great job for the “copilot” while the other person is managing the actual input device.

prole,

No game makes me feel more like a complete idiot than Baba is You. Great game though.

Arkhive,

Yeah, it’s a game I chip away at. I’m at a point in it that the levels often take hours and/or multiple sittings to work out.

Detren,

My girlfriend and I do the same but with more simplistic story heavy games. We just finished Slay The Princess and it was an amazing experience like this.

unit327,

Obra dinn too

Arkhive,

Oooohhhh yes!!! I haven’t gotten to play it yet which is why I forgot it! It’s on my list!!

I'm currently playing Research Story, that one is pretty cute. There are romances. I don't know about combat since I haven't gotten that far (just a few hours of play); it doesn't really seem like there will be combat, but there could be.

I'd also recommend Apico, Mudborne, Littlewood, or Fields of Mistria. I'm sure I'm missing a ton. I think Steam has "Cute," "Romance," and "Slice of Life" tags if you wanted to browse those on the storefront.

If you’re open to the idea of ditching a Microsoft product, I’d suggest Vintage Story as a Minecraft alternative that I think has a nicer aesthetic. It’s meant to be a sort of slow, “grindy” game, but if you sort of rewire your thinking to it being a slice of life game, akin to Stardew, I think it’s very fun. Fair warning the early game can be very punishing if you’re brand new to it, so explore the world and difficulty setting when you make your first save.

Somewhat cozy game with a femme lead I’m excited for is Cairn. It’s got a demo at the moment, but I’m very much looking forward to the full game. It’s technically a survival game about rock climbing, but if I had to guess the story will center the main character going through a lot of personal growth while attempting to scale a mountain (a la Celeste, also a great game) and overcoming a lot of adversity to regain some self confidence.

Detren,

Vintage Story is such a vibe and the building puts Minecraft to shame.

A little to the left is a cute puzzle game that might fit that category

Stop! You violated the law!

I was so happy to see the leaks were true. I’ve been dying for an elder scrolls game with modern graphics and whatnot.

A bunch of retro games have good couch co-op support & the steam deck can emulate pretty much all of them

Zombies ate my neighbors, smash TV, 2-d brawlers like TMNT turtles in time, double dragon, and streets of rage, Goldeneye, toejam and Earl, bubble bobble

unknown1234_5, do games w Looking for a local co-op game to play with my SO (Steam Deck)

crawl, rounds, ship of fools, pico park (better with a large group), risk of rain returns (2 would also be good except that it doesn't actually support local multiplayer, only online).

Chameleon doesn’t work on your quiver in third person unless you unequal something.

Is it just visual for the player, or does it cause NPCs to see you?

Big_Boss_77,

I’m not sure… I don’t THINK it impacts efficacy of the spell, but I’ve not tested thoroughly.

The first life is strange game. I suppose there is technically a violent part but it’s not a game based on violence.

simop_jo,

Exactly this. Life is strange will make you feel like a teenage girl solving a mystery. Its awesome.

FeelzGoodMan420,

And the best part is that this game is good no matter what. Older straight white dude? No problem. Still fun and interesting. It shows how well done it was.

Kazumara,

Agreed, I played it the first time when I was 26, and I’m a straight Swiss and German man. Freaking love playing as Max. I played it two more times after that, and also the Chloe focused prequel.

FeelzGoodMan420,

Before the Storm? Yea that one was really good too. I never played any of the other games though. They never looked as good. Also i heard the newest one was dogshit.

Kazumara,

Yes same here. I did watch a bit of someone else playing the one with the two Mexican brothers running away, but never really had the motivation to play it myself. I guess I just found time power to be much more interesting.

scbasteve7,

I already knew the struggles that women have to endure that most men don’t. But playing this game really put that into perspective, with how immersed I became. By the end of the game, I felt emotionally wreck.

Very much a “girly” game, just in an entirely different sense.
