They are both great (MK64 and CTR)! Sonic Racing Transformed is a great evolution.

I think I might have relapsed. Send help. Everything was going so well, I was playing through the Final Draft of Alan Wake 2 and having the time of my life, and then I clicked on a video YouTube recommended in my feed that looked interesting and the familiar old craving kicked in. Suddenly a week had passed by and I was deep in the rabbit hole again.

So this week I’ve mostly been modding STALKER: Anomaly. There’s been so many new mods and modpacks and even engine optimization released since I played it last and I’m having a blast getting reacquainted, this time basing my modlist on the H.A.C.R. pack which seems to be a flexible and solid base. I’ve already added about 30 mods to it.

I also have to give special mention to the mod and video that kicked it all off - TALKER. It transcribes your voice talking into the mic, and uses AI to give responses from characters in game and it’s actually just so much fun to use, especially for someone like me who loves the role-play and emergent narratives and storytelling of Anomaly. Right now I haven’t even started a full playthrough yet as I’m still tweaking parameters for the AI to fine tune the prompts given to each faction as well as adding to the list of unique personalities.

If you’re an Anomaly player, I definitely recommend checking out TALKER, even though setting it up is a little annoying.

I‘ve gotten Zomboid as well, haven‘t had the time to try it yet though. Any tips for a complete clueless beginner?

Also, crazy how you‘ve kept these posts going!

Chee_Koala,

(Not OP) You are gonna die, a lot :). Don’t worry about that too much, you can spawn your new char in the same world, and use your built up safehouse just the same. On your second char, you already might have skillbooks (like farming 101)and skill-VHS tapes ( like woodcraft episode 3) that help you level faster waiting for you at the old safehouse. So while progression is also character based, it’s not JUST character based.

Zombies are nothing 1 on 1, but scary in groups. Instead of fighting 50 zombies at once, try and herd them into a forest or quiet part nearby, and then make the old Irish Goodbye, just sprint out of sight, take the long way back. It’ll take days for them to find their way back.

Also, it’s a sandbox. Basically every setting is changeable. Dont like something ? Change it. Good luck, have fun!

Helluh,
@Helluh@lemmy.world avatar

Following up on this, I recommend picking your fights but fighting as much as possible. The longer you put off fighting, and probably dying, the angrier you will be when you die because you don’t know how to fight.

Nelots, (edited )

There are three ways to move in Zomboid: walking, running, and sprinting, each faster but more exhausting than the last. You will be tempted to run away from the horde of 65 zombies you just picked up walking through a commercial zone. But you walk faster than zombies, so do not run unless absolutely necessary; you will become exhausted and tire quicker, slowing you and weakening you. The lowest level of exhaustion (out of four) will halve your melee damage and make you move 20% slower, and it quickly gets much worse from there, especially if you’re running or fighting. And never sprint. It will get you killed. The other comment mentioned a far better way to lose zombies than running away full speed.

When creating a character, you pick from a list of negative and positive traits. Positive traits cost points which you get through picking negative traits, so you need to balance them. But when first starting out, I think you’re better off not touching too many negative traits; you don’t want to start the game obese if you don’t know how to lose weight or in what ways it will affect you! That said, there are a few smaller negatives worth picking up. I would recommend Short Sighted, which is completely counteracted by wearing glasses (which you can choose to spawn with), Prone to Illness, which is countered entirely by Outdoorsy (a cheap positive trait), and Weak Stomach, which only affects eating rotting foods (which you really shouldn’t be doing anyway!). That’ll start you off with an extra +8 points to spend on things you want without really affecting you.

I would also like to reinforce an idea the other comment mentioned, it is a sandbox and you can change settings however you like. I highly encourage you to look through them if you get annoyed by something. My friends like to start with starter backpacks and an extra free +8 points to spend on character creation, so I do that when I play with them. And I personally like to change the infection to be transmitted through bites only. There’s loads of options to fit any playstyle.

Ultimately, it’s a sandbox so the difficulty can be scaled to however you have the most fun. Some basic tips I’d suggest though is to cover your windows, so Zombies can’t see in, and maybe look into barricades when you can. You’ll also want to be careful with your fights. Unless you’ve got difficulty low, you can easily get tired and overwhelmed by zombies.

In the later game I also try to setup safe houses around town for emergencies, and I’ll patrol every once and a while too in order to clear out Zombies and keep them from building up around town.

From the first screenshot I thought it was a remake of Syndicate. Maybe that would be a nice mod, turning project zomboid into Syndicate…

Makes me want to restart another Zomboid save, but I’m waiting for B42 multiplayer :/

Also, if you like Zomboid, keep an eye on the development of Vein, looks very promising!

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

I’m in the same boat with multiplayer. It’s a major factor of the game for me.

Vein looks interesting. It’s kind of giving me Zomboid meets Unturned vibes.

MrFinnbean, do games w Do you feel Crash Team Racing was better than Mario Kart?

CTR has so much higher skill ceiling it changes the game completely when comparing to other kart games.

In Mario Kart difference between good player and great player is pretty minor and they can both enjoy playing against eachother.

In CTR good player can think they are playing perfectly, but still they are going to get lapped by great players.

I personaly loved CTR, but playing with friends that havent played it meant nobody is going to have goodtime.

moonluna,
@moonluna@lemmy.world avatar

I keep hearing this reason. I like improving in games so to me it’s all fair game

ChapulinColorado,

Both my cousin and I had the game. Every time we get together we play Mario Kart (SNES) or CTR. CTR feels like Mario kart 8 in a lot of ways with the wide controllable drifts and triple boosts. It was ahead of it’s time for sure, especially for a first entry. I can’t say I’ve enjoyed the sequels as much. Even the remake does not play as well, especially on the sewer level from what I recall.

I’m loving the current unstable beta version. The basements are dope as shit. Especially if you have mods that add random events like air strikes and nukes, making the basements even more useful.

Chee_Koala,

Basements add a lot of vibe, the map is larger… Phew, I can’t wait until the beta build gets mp enabled!

Electric_Druid,

Hopefully build 42 stable comes out before I’m dead, lol

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I felt that way about 40/41 or whatever it was on when I first found out about the game. The most fun stuff was in the MP disabled version and I had gotten the game for myself, my sister and my oldest friend… We still haven’t played together yet 😮‍💨

Whelks_chance,

Was watching a YouTuber play Week One, and he was two floors down in a basement. A plane crashed into the building and all his stuff burned anyway. Then the nukes dropped. Total madness.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Yeah, I don’t know what happened to him (AmbiguousAmphibian? That’s how I heard about the mod lol) but I haven’t had fire spread down to mine. Worst that happened was I got the plane crash event, waited a day for shit to settle down, go up outside and then just immediately died to absolutely nothing. 😬

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve been debating whether to play the beta. I played it on launch but also I play with friends a lot, so it’s some back and forth for me. The basements were super fun though. I always ended up turning them into an underground base since there’s no windows.

Block Blast is a hard puzzle game that blends classic Tetris features and current gameplay, delivering an immensely interesting entertainment experience. With basic but interesting gameplay, block blast is an excellent pick for individuals who love intellectual games and want to exercise logical thinking.

MrScottyTay, do games w Do you feel Crash Team Racing was better than Mario Kart?

It’s better but it’s onboarding is worse. Figuring out the drift boosting is harder than figuring it out for Mario kart with the latter feeling love riding a bike and easy to get back into the muscle memory time and time again.

However, whenever you’ve got the feeling of how CTRs works, It feels better than Mario karts. Giving you more control and more engagement in the moment to moment.

Sometimes i bounce off CTR when coming back to it after a very long time going to just play it for a bit but fumble a bunch of drifts and feel like i can’t be arsed trying to figure it out again currently and just play something else with what little time i had currently.

It also provided the udders.

Yes, 100%.

Just bounced off of Elden Ring again. It’s a good game but idk starting a fresh playthrough just feels like a slog. And jumping back into my overheated character feels boring. I should remove it from my “favorite game” section on Steam but idk what should replace it.

Another game I’m way more into than I thought is Final Fantasy XVI. I’m not a huge FF fan and have gotten a lot less interested in turn based combat as I got older, so I really like this direction FF is heading into.

Clive and Sid’s VAs sound like 30 years older than their characters and the amount of cutscenes is quite overwhelming, but I’m invested.

I had it on my wishlist for quite some time and the reason why I finally pulled the trigger was a short 50 sec video of someone annihilating a deer with the power of god.

TheOakTree,

I just wish the combat in XVI had more depth. You kind of have to force yourself to make fights interesting (if you play lots of action games) by doing flashy stuff that’s less than optimal.

ThunderComplex,

Yeah the fact that the basic 4x LMB into RMB combo is basically the only combo you can do kinda blows. The abilities do mix it up, but only a little. I hope it gets better since I’m only like 7-8 hours into the game and there’s still new stuff being added to the combat, but it does make a really bad first impression.

I still have a hearty backlog tho and I know Like A Dragon is waiting so the horizon is looking good. And I’m gonna buy Expedition 33 this Christmas sale.

Monster Hunter World - IceborneI can’t stop! The game is such a marathon…

I think I’m about halfway through and I’m starting to find the difficult spike a bit much so I’m focussing on some easier optional quests to get materials for upgrades which is quite nice as I get through them quickly.

I love how the game looks and feels, prefer it to Rise, but I think I prefer the combat in Rise. The problem with MHWI is the new clutch claw mechanic, it makes monsters get staggered during a fight and leaves them out of distance so you have to use the claw, it really breaks the rhythm of the game, plus they have inflated the monster health massively in Master Rank to compensate for the new mechanic which means fights can take ages if you don’t take advantage of the clutch claw moves perfectly.

Looking forward to Monster Hunter Wilds at some point in the future.

Finished Diablo 3 Season 36. I was really hoping to fully fill out the Altar of Rites this time, but for the life of me and my necromancer, I could not get Ramaladni's Gift to drop. Oh well. This week I'll finally be starting Diablo 4's new season in-between Thief runs (yes, I'm still obsessed, lol).

bitwolf, do games w Do you feel Crash Team Racing was better than Mario Kart?

Funny you bring it up. When Mario Kart introduced the coins, I immediately thought of the Wumpa Fruits in even the first CTR.

I read it as Nintendo running out of ideas. But it seems the Switch 2 Mario Kart adding the cross country game mode is somewhat more novel than the coins.

moonluna,
@moonluna@lemmy.world avatar

Just took 26 years. Lol Nintendo doesn’t put much effort into their games anymore. I checked out the new Pokemon game and it was so soulless

cfi,

Coins were part of the original Super Mario Kart, they disappeared after that
