taiyang,

I adore the first trilogy of DQ games but I’m holding off cause I don’t like or trust SE anymore (plus, denuvo, ugh).

I will say, it’s a better experience to play 1 thru 3 in order with no prior knowledge of what makes them a trilogy. Having 3 stand alone kind of misses that “oh fuuuuuuuck” realization I got to experience (and subjected a friend to, who has yet to forgive me lol). It’s what made 3 one of my favorites next to 5 and 11.

taiyang,

I imagine with denuvo he’ll have to wait a moment before he can sail the seas. Not too long, though.

Hold yourself over with emulated DQ 1 and 2!

taiyang,

This tracks, I almost exclusively play Balarto on my deck. A lot of those last almost a whole day on battery with how undemanding they are (and did you know you can undervolt games? I run a copy of Phantasy Star Online at 3w and it lasts 8 hours).

taiyang,

I agree. I wish we could get a deck mini at the very least. I miss my hacked PSP for that reason, it has a good size for emulation. A PSP sized PC would be insane.

taiyang,

Sounds like a lovely Monday.

taiyang,

Oh. Well uh, Mondays puzzle is so easy I already took care of it on the can earlier but I can consider Tuesday I guess.

I’ll break the other ones though, Wordle and Connections are unfun anyway.

taiyang,

That was the suggestion I was going to make! They have always been burpy and silly and “Job’s Done!” and all that. Even the sheep will bleat out a Babe reference with enough clicks!

taiyang,

Ah shit, here we go again.

But really, I place it second after GTAV, but I’m biased. I was born and raised in LA but I was too young to fully get San Andreas references. But V? I live where Franklins from, work where Michael lives, and have relatives where Trevor lives. It’s not satire, it’s a documentary.

taiyang,

Good ol’ Sandy Shores. I wish it wasn’t so spot on sometimes! Not that South LA is much better.

taiyang,

Fun fact, in the latest edition of the game, you can actually stop blue shells with the pow like horn thing. It’s tricky to time, but man is it a surprise to your player two!

taiyang,

Whenever it rains, I still hum that tune. Gives a certain mood to it all.

taiyang,

I’m going to give you an evil answer and say Final Fantasy X. Are you ready to dodge 200 lightning bolts?

taiyang,

I hate to admit doing it multiple times, including in my 30s, haha. But it’s a long and tedious achievement. The trick to doing it at our age is a good podcast to keep the mind busy!

taiyang,

Games soon: modders removed the nail clipping mechanic for a 1600% performance boost (while also adding ultra wide support and removing the arbitrary 30fps cap in cutscenes); however the due to legal action the modder had to take it down or him and his family would be jailed and forced to pay $30 million for harming the company.

taiyang,

My joke is very very much inspired by real events. SE is notoriously bad at ports. Trying to play FFXVI and it goes to screensaver during cutscenes without mods. Amateur hour, haha.

taiyang,

I’m always reminded of the great passage from the Bible, “Lets-a-go!” (Nintendo 16:64).

However, given the correct answer, I’m reminded of another verse, “It does what Nintendon’t” (Genesis 8:16 KNCKLS).

taiyang,

Incoming water level!

  • taiyang,

To be fair, 30% cut probably wouldn’t be sustainable. They were hemeraging money last I checked thanks to exclusives and “free” games.

    taiyang,

Mix the two and use a trapezoidal shape for the mouth, perhaps?

    taiyang,

When my raid friends and I have a little disposable income (like during COVID) I’ll admit we did troll one another like this. They’re still welcome to get me troll games and I promise them I’ll play them but only as a “rando” when I randomize my collection.

What’s more fun was back before people knew, recommending doki doki literature club to hentai VN fans.

    taiyang,

I remember from an interview that the first JRPG, Dragon Quest, was heavily inspired by Wizardry (as with other CRPGs of the time). Most others copied that design, including Final Fantasy, so in many ways we can thank Greenberg for helping lay the groundwork for virtually all RPGs, not just CRPGs.

    taiyang,

Yeah, especially since the game has a true ending that’s easy to give up on if you’re bad at finding conches. Can be intimidating, as I watch someone quietly quit at the final boss.

    taiyang,

Feels like they want to setup for something… But yeah, no spoilers.

    taiyang,

I ended up just getting them for my wife, the funny thing is it took me like 20 minutes to get 20 once you know all the harder ones (like oasis). But yeah, I agree. Optional bosses made sense at least.

    taiyang,

My guilty pleasure: 4k TV, 4080 gpu, and I’m playing mother fuckin’ Super Smash Bros Melee.

    taiyang,

I actually prefer my in game name, enough to use it at coffee shops when they call my name. I also meet up with my online friends often enough that it’s not too weird.

    taiyang,

Oh fuck, I forgot about this. I never got a chance to play those because my brother, and then my father, both monopolized the games. Ironic the same was true of Kingdom Hearts, and it sounds like both are released a week of one another on steam. (Yay, reliving a childhood I didn’t have!)

  • taiyang,

You know, part of me wants to do a Civ marathon and try to remember the rules in the first few games I haven’t played in decades. Alpha Centari would be on that list, though.

    taiyang,

Omg, haven’t been this hyped since the live action Dragon Ball movie.

What are some excellent free games/total conversions that are worth playing the whole thing? angielski

I used up play a ton of Doom mods years ago and a lot of the TCs were fun but lacked substance beyond the surface. Some of the new ones are cool but overly complex. (The Sonic cart game has an hour long tutorial before you start). I was a big fan of Simon’s Destiny, the Castlevania mod for Doom....

    taiyang,

It’s been a long time but one of my favorites was the Star Control 2 remake Ur-Quan Masters. I believe there is a free HD version out there, too. Plus if you like it, the OG creators have current projects you can support (they left that IP after 2).

Not sure what genre it is; certainly not action packed like your examples but those space battles were fun.

    taiyang,

Thanks for linking that, I didn’t have anything handy since it’s been ages.

    taiyang,

Natural next step, given the riveting narrative of the games. Truly a masterpiece in story telling.

Real talk though, you haven’t lived until you played Minecraft in VR and looked an enderman in the eye. It hits on another level when it’s literal eye contact, like looking at the wrong guy on the bus and getting murdered for it.

    taiyang,

I have the Nintendo one, originally for animal crossing and now it’s more because my 2 year old likes Super Mario 64 and I do not want to set her up on a PC to emulate it quite yet. Switch is a lot easier on her tiny baby hands, plus handhelds are more intuitive.

My stepdad has Xboxs thing, which works for him anyway. Given he’s retired and has time but not a lot of money, it’s a better bang for his buck (plus he’s not exactly planning on living forever).

    taiyang,

To add, it was a fully voiced letter. In N64 era. To young me, that blew me away (plus it was my first 3D)

    taiyang,

Side note, is there there a good open source alternative to Discord in terms of it’s exact functionality? (And I don’t mean as a forum alternative, but voice comms and streaming). After their app update, I’m kind of annoyed with them. Yet, my community is rather dependent on them despite their enshittification.

We got sucked in because you could simply link it to randos on MMOs and if they didn’t want to download an app, could still have voice comms in browser. Before that, we had ventrillo, mumble, etc, but nothing was quite as easy access for randos. But man, they kind of suck lately so… hrm. :/

    taiyang,

For a sec there I was wondering if that was a April 1st joke but it’s the 4th so that seems unlikely!

    taiyang,

Nevermind that Shimonura deserves it for other major works, like Kingdom Hearts or, amazingly enough, Mario RPG (those who say you can’t remember her songs, fucking Mushroom Forest lives rent free in my head since the 90s). XV isn’t even her best work!

Fun fact, she worked on Street Fighter 2 way back when. From an interview I read, she wrote Blanca’s theme inspired by a day watching and listening to a plastic bag stuck in a subway system (the beat does sound like a train on rails, iirc). I’d dig up the article, but it’s probably been close to a decade since reading it.

What are some hidden indie gems nobody knows about? angielski

Which indies did you discover and would love more people to know about? I’ll start: The Pale Beyond. Not sure if it’s a hidden gem tbh, but it’s such a good story rich game. I laughed, I cried and felt the characters struggles. If you like story rich games/ choices matter, check it out.

    taiyang,

Baba even has merch from third parties (e.g. fangamer) so yeah. But you know what, screw it, I also love Baba is You. Two votes!

    taiyang,

Hmmm… how about the Rusty Lake games? They’re weird. Or maybe Milk Inside a Bag of Milk Inside a Bag of Milk? Adventure puzzler and VN respectively.

I probably have a few more if I think about it. My friend and I randomize my steam list to decide things to play and there were quite a few interesting ones I got from who knows where-- bundles and bundles.

    taiyang,

There’s even a recent one that’s two player, I guess inspired by the We Were Here games. Which now that I think it it, also recommend.

My friend and I still say “My blood sugar is low” and “Owls” now as again as an inside Rusty Lake joke.

    taiyang,

Ah, is it too late to add this to a wedding registry? I married 10 years ago but these would be perfect, especially if there is a matching white set. Lol

    taiyang,

I was thinking the same thing, I imagine there’s an indie game or two out there but the dude bros probably aren’t playing those. Celeste came to mind but that’s not a gay protagonist so much as a trans one.

    taiyang,

Oh yeah, how could I forget Hades. Kind of everything goes with him, though (I’m grateful how Dusa ends, haha). But yes, it is ancient Greece.

    taiyang,

Pretty meh meme, the latest ones are all the same dev team while the older ones are different teams with very different projects. Just look at the recent Mana game announcement, or KH4, etc. Kind of misleading for the sake of rousing up people.

Just feels… a bit “Kids these days…”, ya know. Darn millennials and their simple fonts.

Here's what a random person on the internet thought of Lords Of The Realm 2 (lemmy.world) angielski

Lords Of The Realm 2 is my gaming equivalent of comfort food. It might not have awards or hype buzzing around it, but it is always the perfect choice for a rainy day when I’m feeling restless. I’ve played and replayed it many times. Currently I own it on Steam....

    taiyang,

I played this as a kid and I loved it. I bet now, as an adult who understands gameplay, it’s probably a ton more interesting!

    taiyang,

S’ok, I’ve played both and I too agree BG3 should win, haha.

    taiyang,

Ah if only they could see what had become of EA years (decades?) later…

    taiyang,

Well putting it another way, labor market always stabilizes, and it’s only the last few decades labor didn’t raise with demand (at least in the U.S.). But inevitably people find work or create work, the speed of which could be days or it can be decades depending on a ton of factors that won’t fit in a one off explanation on Lemmy (especially given how much people don’t like hearing what I have to say, regardless of my own training in policy lol).

But to explain at least a little nuance, people in jobs with low entry requirements often do change industry and people with training or education sometimes do. Tech companies gave us a great example recently with massive layoffs. Reports are still out but it seems like many of them just found more work or made start ups. It was kind of interesting that some left tech, but it’s a high paying job and even outside of layoffs, there’s a concept that if you want a raise, you change jobs because there’s always someone looking for programmers.

My wife actually ended up in localization, which is slightly different from translation but has room to go up (which she did). Same industry. Not going to dox her, of course, but she managed to get work within a week and has a weirdly high success rate even if the industry still grossly underpays everyone (gaming is a passion field). Bilingual skill is not easy to train, so she was valuable-- she just didn’t know it when she was just doing contact based translation work.

Ugh, and there’s another long winded explanation I meant to avoid, haha. Look, I don’t worry too much about it if you’re American (or Western European). If you guys want to get upset about something, it can and will harm the jobs that were outsourced decades ago. Translation for instance is big in Eastern Europe (e.g. Romania) and automation easily removes those jobs.
