I’m just a weird, furry, pan guy (cis he/him). I also have a big, blue username.

Currently on Earth for 8 years ensuring steps to unite humanity and usher us into the galactic civilization just so I can see my boyfriend again.

I sometimes feel like the only American that liked Bubsy. The biggest complaint I hear about it is that the jumping if super floaty; but that’s it’s strength! Once you get the rhythm of the game down, you’re basically Tribes style skiing through the levels. It’s awesome.

Man I wish I had $11k to just blow right now…

I wonder if it would be cheaper to build my own table. I don’t care about the graphics or sounds as much as playing a good pinball table. Physically, and not via a game even if it’s a good simulation.

Only as long as it’s not in the oven so long due to mismanagement and constantly changing direction.

It could be the sudden and unexpected success of Hollow Knight paralyzing them the way that happened with Valhiem. Not that it’s necessarily a fault of the devs; you hit a huge success like that, there is now a weight on your shoulder to always be that good.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Development on your game being delayed because you’re too busy playing another game is perfectly fair.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I don’t even know what the newest game I even own is… Helldivers 2? Except for Elden Ring and it’s DLC, I haven’t bought anything close to release for years. HD2 came out last year and I bought it last week.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I actually learned that I can’t even sort my Steam library by release date because of this thread. Otherwise I would actually know lol

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I can proudly say that every game I have on Steam or any other platform that has 0 play time, is a game I obtained for free.

Deep Rock Galactic roguelike dev says innovation for innovation's sake is too expensive to survive: "We're a studio of 50 people with bills to pay" (www.gamesradar.com)

“It sounds weird but we try to keep our innovation as low as possible,” the director explained. “We’ll say ‘it’s this game but with that.’ It takes so much time to innovate. Sometimes you find the hidden holy Grail of game design, but often indie developers sit for five years trying out stuff. We’re a studio of...

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

IMO, “it’s this game, but with X” is innovation. It’s certainly more innovative than “it’s this game, again, with absolutely nothing new” like Ubisoft basically does with every sequel to every IP they handle.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I actually was thinking about this the other day with soulslikes as I make my way through Bloodborne. This is an entire genre that isn’t even new. They’re Metroidvanias (or whatever you would classify the OG Castlevania as other than just “side scrolling platformer”)! The only real difference is that you don’t get tools as like weapons/accessories to reach new areas, you just get a boring ass key that opens a door, you open a door from only one side, or a trigger automatically opens a new path when you defeat a boss. 🤣

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Starfield was just weird. Like, I expected the load screens and all the other GameBryo/Creation jank. But that’s not what made it disappointing. It was just… Boring. I couldn’t get immersed in the world because nothing about it was interesting once you scratched deeper than the surface. Even the twist ending/NG+ system which is actually kind of a neat idea wasn’t done well (like you might have to go through the entire, boring-ass game up to 7 times before you even see a difference).

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I honestly don’t know why they don’t simply make those a subscription service at this point. They change nothing but the stats to try and reflect real life in most iterations. Sports games are the one type of game that because of how they already do them would be perfect for the love service bullshit, and yet, inexplicably, they are the one genre that has next to no live service games. I can literally only think of one of the FIFA games which is free 2 play and live service.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

TOTK makes BOTW look like a tech demo. I wasn’t very whelmed with BOTW, either, but I am glad I checked out TOTK because it is, IMO, the best exclusive on the system.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I haven’t seen an interactive event on Steam for, like, a decade. Unless they’re counting sales as interactive events. 🤔

They used to have, like, gamified events where you’re earning things (like maybe trading cards or badges or other Steam profile items) by playing a small little browser game inside the store page. Those were always fun.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I kinda wonder if they even have any good ideas left after Starfield was such a disappointment in the creativity department.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Is that a typo for Crime Scene Cleaner or is there actually a jizz mopping sim?

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Here’s an idea: Just make Conway’s Game of Life but with absurdly good graphics. 😌

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Oh, is the developer Peter Molyneux’s protoge?

Kolanaki,

I was actually surprised to see Ultima Online is still up and active recently. It must have a pretty decent sized population for EA not to shut down and repurpose the servers for Battlefield or something.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

How do you organize a game that has 2,000 people working on it?

I mean, with the general state of AAA gaming these days I have to assume they don’t. Have you seen some of the shit that’s been coming out?

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

It wasn’t intended to be like it, but in a way it did have some of the same ideas. It did have the camp clearing parts with what was supposed to be a pretty sophisticated AI faction system. But the system never really worked as intended without mods, so the whole faction battle system just felt super scripted (like, nobody would come and take back control points after you capped them, even though they were supposed to until you completely destroyed the opposing faction). It’s even more fleshed out (and actually works) in Clear Sky. Which is why CS has been my favorite STALKER since it came out.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Vermintide 2.

Deep Rock Galactic.

FarCry (I think all of them? It’s been forever since I played 1-3 tho; the newest ones all have co-op)

Marvel Rivals cheater banned for 100 years (beehaw.org)

Today I’ve reported a player in Marvel Rivals for being a cheater (it was obvious to me, even autoaim through wall playing hawkeye). And I just got a confirmation message that the player is banned until 2125… basically a 100 year ban. :D Do report them. Report toxicity as well (I get ton of confirmation). But do not report...

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Has anyone ever really noticed how samey everything looks right now? It’s a bit hard to explain, because it’s not the aesthetics of any kind of art style used, but the tech employed and how it’s employed. Remember how a lot of early 3D in film just looked like it was plastic? It’s like that, but with a wider variety of materials than plastic. Yet every modern game kinda looks like it’s made using toys.

Like, 20 years from now I think it would be possible to look at any give game that is contemporary right now and be able to tell by how it looks when it was made. The way PS1 era games have a certain quality to them that marks when they were made, or how games of the early 2000’s are denoted by their use of browns and grays.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Oh yeah this isn’t a complaint, because I think it looks good. It’s just I notice it, and it probably is from almost everything being made on UE5 these days. However, I think MGSV was one of the first games to have this particular look to it, and that’s on its own in-house engine (FOX Engine). It could just be how the lighting and shadowing are done. Those two things are getting so close to photorealism that it’s the texturing and modeling work that puts things (usually human characters) into the uncanny valley. A scene of a forest can look so real… And then you put a person walking through it and the illusion is lost. lol

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

You’re making me wanna watch the first Terminator again. Haven’t seen it since probably high school and maybe it will hit different now.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Is Counter-Strike a sports game by virtue of being an e-sport? 🤔

I wish there were more sports games like Rocket League, though. Something that is akin to real sports and played in a way that your movement and handling of the controls is the skill needed and not hidden stats behind the scenes like a Madden game where your handling of a ball is dependent on the character/dice rolls not the player.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I have the exact opposite opinion of procedurally generated continuity (because I play for the gameplay and that stuff keeps the game going well after the story ends), but share the same opinion of Warner Bros.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Until more recently when they started getting competion, what other handheld gaming PCs even existed?

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I’ve used Tamriel Rebuilt a while back and it was pretty fucking cool. There was only one small patch of the map that wasn’t completed when I played it, and none of it was populated. But they had the landmasses and cities all built and decorated. If they haven’t gotten NPCs populating places by now, I have no idea what they’ve been doing this whole time (it’s been several years now since I checked it out).

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

If you think Oblivion’s was comically fucked up, I have to assume you didn’t play Morrowind. Which was basically the same but worse.

Kolanaki, (edited )
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

It did. You’ll start to see “mudcrabs” become, like, “diseased mudcrab” and other various divider names as they scaled up with you, the same as they do in Oblivion and Skyrim. It has the same problem of “oh no, I leveled up to 25 by only jumping and now everything is too strong for my wimpy combat skills to handle.” Though because the game is already tougher from the start, it may not be as noticeable.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Don’t forget emulated PS1 and PS2 games!

Related: I got PS+ for my birthday and saw they had Indiana Jones in the catalog and downloaded it without really looking. I thought it was the new one; it was a PS2 game. lol

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I really want to check that out, but it is incompatible with my favorite mod: Save Our Ship 2. I refuse to give up SOS2 just to play with another human.

Kolanaki, (edited )
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Counter-Counter-Point: Valve literally is the developer that made lootboxes ubiquitous in gaming. The good things they do have and have done still do not outweigh the bad, nor should this fact ever be ignored. They make a good product because it gets them customers. They also were one of the first devs I read about to have hired psychologists to scientifically addict you to games. They are only your friend so far as they understand you can get more flies with honey than with vinegar.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Where?

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I’d love to see someone make a “TF2 Classic” where it’s the game as it was on release, but with all the current QOL and fixes; none of the unlockables and hats and all that bullshit. Just pure fucking fun. Oh, and also give us back all the scripting commands they needlessly took away because some players are too dumb to type shit into the console or download someone else’s config and were claiming that they were unfair.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I had made a script that would allow me to set timers for my stickies as a demo. Spray a CP or doorway with 'em, set the timer to, like, 60 seconds and then go spam regular nades somewhere and just wait for someone to explode a minute later.

What's your "this is totally fine and I'm going to have a great time" FPS (refresh rate). ?

For me, anything 25 FPS or higher is 100% fine and I’ll be enjoying my time. I never play competitive online shooter games ever, though. All single player ones like GOW and the likes. I game on a 60 Hz 4k monitor. GPU is AMD RX 6600 alongside Ryzen 7 5700G and 32GB RAM. My games are set to meduim most of the time at 4k....

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

If it’s not 60 or higher, I can’t stand it. But it has to be consistent. Even constant fluctuations between 120-140 are felt even if not necessarily seen. I generally just try to get 60 since my display is 60hz. What’s annoying is that I could be doing 1440p at 60 with my specs, but for some reason setting the display to that specific resolution locks it to 30hz.

The display is 4k, and has 60hz available at 4k and every other resolution. My PC can’t handle 4k @ 60 for most things, though.

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 players actually want less authenticity, if this infinite shoe mod is any indication (www.rockpapershotgun.com)

Infinite shoe durability does what it says on the shoebox - disabling the wear and tear Henry accumulates on his footwear while gallivanting around the Bohemian wilderness, and so eliminating the need to replace or repair his favourite pair. To me, this is both a little baffling (again, surely you play a game like KC:D II for...

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Realism should never get in the way of fun.

Yes, things fall apart/break over time or with excessive use. But it still takes way longer IRL for that to happen than in a game with these mechanics. Some of them are really bad and the best equipment lasts for maybe 15 minutes. Which is total bullshit. I don’t want to stop the fun part of the game to go back to base and fix my tools every 15 minutes.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I know a few other games that have that kind of reload mechanic and it really makes me wonder why I am not just saving the magazines to use later.

Also: I literally just got Helldivers 2 yesterday. Maybe I’ll see you in-game sometime. 😃

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

The whole description of the game when they announced it made it sound like a mod. I was shocked to see it’s an official Fromsoft game. I do not have high hopes for it.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Even when you were buying games on physical media, you didn’t own the software itself. You just owned a disc with the software on it.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Cyberpunk games would be fine, these rules are about forcing players to watch an ad to experience parts of the game, like when a mobile game makes you watch an ad before you can continue playing after beating a level or when you can watch an ad to get more coins/gems or whatever. Having ads in the game itself isn’t being banned.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Just tell the competitive dude in casual mode to go play ranked instead of whining about everyone else sucking.
