Every time Valve has brought it up before, it’s been in interviews where they have mentioned they have contingency plans to make your library available somehow if they ever have to close up shop. Though, originally Steam had a way of creating physical backups in the program itself. If it still does, it’s been moved somewhere in the UI I don’t know about. But you may not need it anyway, because back then games were stored in their own proprietary containers (GFC files). These days, it’s the same structure as any other installation and you can often just copy that to something and not even need cracks for it to run.

@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

What’s attempted to be singled out isn’t the “we can terminate your access at any time.” They are claiming that Ubisoft’s suggests you need to destroy the copies you already have if they stop supporting it.

Though it doesn’t even look like that is actually the case looking at the very clause the article is quoting. It’s the standard “we can revoke your ability to download this thing at any time” shit. Where the fuck does it suggest users have to destroy their copies?

Fucking modern “journalism…” 😑

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Ubisoft is generally shit all around so maybe it’s just bias. Or maybe they do have such a clause in something, they just didn’t quote the actual relevant bits in this article.

It’s pretty common to say “hey we can turn this off at any time and you will not be entitled to a refund and won’t be able to access anything via our online services” but this “hey if we decide to shut down the online services, you need to delete everything related to it you have on your device too” is new. And even more consumer hostile.

If Larian goes belly up, they can suck my left nut if they think I am gonna delete BG3 off my hard-drive.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

You probably could. Buy game, download game, make backup of game, refund game, maybe crack the game you now have backed up, play game basically for free. But it’s just piracy with extra steps. And if you do it enough, they probably will ban your account from even making purchases.

I would argue that Fallout 3 is a good game, but it is not a good Fallout game. It is fun to play, and has all the other hallmarks of a good Bethesda game, but the vibe is wrong. It feels like something ripping off Fallout (because, it kinda is?) and misses the beats of the originals. It’s more than likely just cultural differences between the developers. Black Isle was Californian, Bethesda is somewhere on the East coast. And 4 managed to bring that OG vibe to the series, even if it absolutely fucking sucks as an RPG (great FPS tho).

That said, the Oblivion remake showed me that just updating the graphics but keeping the original jank was not a good thing. Fallout 3 now would not hold up the same way it did back in 2008.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

They’re working on that, too. It went from preproduction to full development about 2 years ago. It is likely to be released next year, according to some sources that were also completely accurate about the Oblivion remake rumors.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

My first one was the first one, and what sets it (and 2) apart from 3 other than literally the entire game (1 and 2 were 2D isometric, dialogue and choice heavy, CRPGs with turn-based tactical combat) was as I said the general vibe.

It didn’t take itself too seriously and the humor was incredibly seated in pop culture references. Bethesda’s brand of humor is more muted and generic, and their writing is incredibly dry sometimes (the best writing they’ve ever seen is in Elder Scrolls 3).

4 has the same kind of silliness as the originals, the visuals also fit a lot better IMO. But the CRPG elements are almost entirely gone at this point, which is why I regard it as a fun shooter and not an RPG.

New Vegas, however, is still the GOAT among the 3D Fallout games. Not only does it have actual RPG elements that I expect from something calling itself an RPG, it has the exact same tone and vibe as the first two games mainly because it had Brian Fargo and one of the other original writers working on it.

What are signs that the game devs aren't gamers themselves? angielski

Title is tongue in cheek, of course—they probably are gamers. I get that making a game is complex and full of trade-offs, and you can’t please everyone. Still, there are certain design decisions that just feel like they weren’t made by people who play games regularly.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I wouldn’t really say it’s the devs for most of the stuff I see that has me questioning if whoever was in charge ever played a video game before. Stupidly simply QOL things that end up being absent in a game that is ripping off another game, likely only absent because the dev team didn’t have time to work on those elements.

However, games that constantly take control away from the player like every 2-5 minutes, I have to question the designer themselves. I wanted to play a game and these kinds of games end up getting watched like a movie with how often you don’t have any control over what’s happening. And I don’t mean games like Detroit Become Human or even The Quarry (which is 100℅ an interactive movie), I mean shit like Dragon’s Dogma 2 or a lot of the newest Nintendo first party titles. It takes away controk of your character for some of the stupidest shit; like high fiving your team mates without any input from the player.

Ubisoft is the Shredder of game companies. Evil, but ultimately their plans would fall apart even without the Turtles intervening because they are just awful.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I only know the OG cartoon and movies, myself. Shredder wasn’t even the true villain in the OG cartoon after a certain point; he became Krang’s bumbling henchman in like the second or 3rd season. Krang, being the literal brains of the operstion had plans and Shredder, well… Shredded them.

Kolanaki,

From Crosspoint I heard that they even cancelled and shut down the studio making a game (forget the name off the top of my head) that Phil Spencer himself was said to have liked so much, they had to force him to quit playing their demo in a meeting about it. Not to mention the absolute waste of time and money on nearly finished projects that were probably going to sell well.

PC is harder to define since everyone has varying hardware and specific setting preferences. Most PC games let you change nearly everything and let you mix and match what is high, what is low, what is on or off, etc. And if you have the money, you can get both performance and quality if the game isn’t busted. :p

Legally pirated

That’s called “privateering.” 🤣

Elden ring night reign single player angielski

I have been wanting to play this game since it was announced. However, I prefer single player games. I know this game is designed for 3 players, but I read that they were going to add 2 player and maybe single player support. have they made it any better for us loners? I don’t really want to play with randoms either....

Kolanaki, (edited )
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

It has always had single player you just get NPC team mates instead of human players. It’s not even always online.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Wow really? They said it would in one of the longer trailers for the game.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I understand just fine. The only good mobile games aren’t mobile games. They are ports of normal games for mobile devices. Which is a super incredibly small number of games.

And latching onto Gatcha games as a good thing for kids? Might as well get them cigarettes and alcohol too if you wanna get them addicted earlier.

If that’s your takeaway, I suggest seeking some classes in reading comprehension.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

It, like most games of the era, followed the rule of cool. As such, it references a ton of similarly themed media. A lot of which was cyberpunk, conspiracy theories, and general sci-fi. All the unique ideas in the game are really just in the game part. The story and all that is almost all entirely lifted from other sources. So it makes sense to me that they didn’t project their own message into the game. It doesn’t say anything the media that inspired it hadn’t already said.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Idk if Kojima truly made MGS with no politics in mind. He kinda predicted a lot of reality of the past few years with 2 and 4.

I wonder if this will let me see if framegen is being used in games that don’t have an explicit option to turn it on or off… 🤔

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Presumably it requires the Steam Overlay, which does have a slight impact on performance (and stability). Though, unless something is really wrong, you’re not going to notice the incredibly small loss of 1fps.

I keep the box in case I want to resell the thing. Makes it easier to transport by just packing it all back up the way it came.

Hell, I keep my Quest 3 in the box just to store it when not using it because it’s better than buying some extra stand for it and can fit in a drawer.

Kolanaki,

We just need to go back to weird. Games have been some of the weirdest things in media I have ever seen. And I consume a lot of media. Books are certainly weird, but games tend to go a bit further in the weirdness than even Franz Kafka or Harlan Ellison.

Mainstream AAA games avoid weird. They want to appeal to everyone, so they are, of course, getting to a point where they will not appeal to anyone. Indie games still experiment. Or at least work on some really weird ideas… They don’t always work, but definitely are out there lol

What are your favourite single-player games without much fluff, grinding or difficulty spikes? angielski

Hello, in the recent years I find myself willing to spend much less time and energy on games, but I do still enjoy them. Oftentimes I end up quitting a new game I tried out relatively early on, because I’m encountering some block, grind, non-optional boring side quest, empty open world, uninteresting clutter or details that I...

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Dark Souls (any) and Bloodborne.

The others don’t pass muster because they do have some insane difficulty spikes. These don’t, really. Smough & Ornstein is really the only spike I can think of in the entire DS series and BB actually felt pretty even through the whole game.

Grinding isn’t necessary and there is essentially zero fluff in all of them, tho.

Kolanaki, (edited )
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Currently it’s The Finals, though I have been taking a break. I need to fire it back up to see if my biggest issue with it has been fixed… It was the fact that the netcode was garbage and the entire match could be completely out of sync to the point that what you actually see other players doing is nowhere near the reality of what is actually going on in the game.

The dev made a post that they knew about the problem and even identified the cause, but as of the last time I actually played, it hadn’t been fixed yet.

Second place is Crossout. It’s essentially F2P Twisted Metal but you build your own vehicles. The biggest flaw with it is the grind. It takes so much time and rounds played to advance to unlock new parts and earn resources. I’ve been playing for a month and I’m only level 11, and still stuck playing the super basic starting modes until I have enough “PS” to open up the others. 😮‍💨 I think it might actually be P2W with how other players at the same rank can have full blown mechs while I am still stuck with the shittiest car parts going off the normal, free level of progression.

Then again, it also had ABSOLUTELY NO TUTORIAL beyond the basics of driving your car. It doesn’t explain any of the menus, how to build, how to share, etc. I could just be missing something.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

AI upscaled textures were already a thing and they are the laziest “upgrades” imaginable, not worth my money over the original I already have.

Meditate to regain mana, like you do in Ultima Online. 🤷‍♂️

Kolanaki,

just flies to the skybox ceiling

Y’all still using cars?

Making money is so much easier and reliable, now that you can do all the shit that required being in an open public lobby in a private one now. No more dickheads destroying your shipments. No more modders turning you into Optimus Prime and fucking up your game.

You can even do a million dollar heist all by yourself (though, it’s hard as fuck and you need a nuclear submarine).

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I would hope so. I mean, they made it. It’s be weird if, say, Bungie was in Control. 🤷‍♂️

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I keep playing it just because it’s something to do, but I feel it really misses the mark of what the Control franchise should be about. The world is interesting. It told interesting stories within the confines of a single player game. Firebreak doesn’t seem to have a story at all, and the action is pretty average with the same mininal enemy variety as Control. It also does not feel like a game from a company like Remedy; it’s half-cooked and janky. It works but it’s not quite polished.
