Really? Are you factoring in the $120/yr for 5 years just to play games over the life of your Xbox?

dan1101,

Good point, also there are more PC games and they are usually cheaper.

@Redacted@lemmy.world avatar

I always gamed predominantly on PC but this generation I did the maths as PC parts had become over-inflated so decided to give console a try. I still think it was a decent decision for this generation…

Game Pass can be had waaaaaay cheaper than that and you can get it all back and more in rewards points.

I spent £450ish on the console at launch including controller and a game. Equivalent GPU was £500 or more at the time.

Spent £150ish on Game Pass sub from November 2020 to July 2026 which has allowed me to play countless games I never would have bought outright.

I’ve made over £700 back in vouchers with over 2 years left to accumulate more. Spent half of it on games, and controllers, headset, etc. all of which I can use on my PC. Plan on saving the remaining vouchers to put towards my next PC build.

This is without mentioning other console benefits like low maintenance, Quick Resume and the fact I can use one copy of a game to play with two players online.

eXpLaIN hOw im OuT oF pOcKeT.

Dudewitbow,

the problem with this argument is gamepass isn’t a console exclusive feature.

Redacted,
@Redacted@lemmy.world avatar

That’s why I mentioned those other console exclusive features. Anyway the original point was about cost and I think the Series X was the best value for money at launch this gen…

  • Half the price of building a similar PC at launch.
  • Rewards are higher on console so recoup the cost more than PC.
  • I use Game Pass on both PC and Xbox with a single account to play multiplayer so cheaper on that front.

We’re half way through the generation now though. PC parts have got cheaper, Game Pass Ultimate conversion ratio has dropped and rewards are drying up so probably wouldn’t advocate it anymore. PC likely to be better value next gen.

Looks very janky. There are a lot of moments where the AI just looks completely broken like in 1:12 where he instantly goes from being on the floor to an attack animation. I guess it’s not surprising considering it’s in development hell.

It’s such a blow to the gut to watch this. I don’t often watch The Completionist’s content but when I do, it was enjoyable and he has such a following. To taint and take advantage of the concept of charity is so egregious. Hopefully it doesn’t deter people from charities but instead do more extensive research on the charitable organizations and foundations on their own

Summary

  • Thank you for making the game surpass 1 million copies sold!
  • The highest priority for the team is developing the DLC and working on the sequel. Brainstorming and exploring different aspects of the projects.
  • Planning another patch in November (exact dates are still being discussed).
  • Expect some balances in the weapon assembly system
  • Rising dodge will be provided as a default skill, eliminating the need to unlock it from the P-Organ. This is to ease the difficulty in the early stages of the game specifically against the shovel puppet (aka Pancake Bot).
  • Polendina will sell 2 additional Quartz from the first stage of his shop.
  • They will give Alidoro costumes to all players as a token of gratitude, including his mask
  • They will introduce an extra slot for facial accessories, enabling the wearing of hats and glasses at the same time.
  • They are planning to add new wearables in the game - the Alchemist’s Hat (Venigni Hat) and a brand new pair of glasses!
  • Aside from these, several other elements are currently in preparation. For a comprehensive overview of the final contents, please refer to the upcoming patch notes
  • They are grateful to the players for praises and compliments on the music. They are currently in the process of preparing the release of the soundtrack. The collection will have nearly all the music from Lies of P, totaling more than 60 tracks.
  • They are also working more diligently and investing considerable thought and effort to meet the expectations in the Wo Long Fallen Dynasty crossover and make the collaboration of the highest quality.
  • Working on DLC - they are hiring new developers to join their team.
  • Shared some sketches from the DLC. These images are merely the tip of an iceberg. Let your imagination go wild and anticipate what’s to come.

To me it’s less about the user reviews, and more about how as now some time is passing, listening to professional reviewers in podcasts etc, more and more the mood turns… tepid?

It’s not that anyone is underwhelmed. More just… whelmed.

Assassin's Creed: Black Flag but with none of the Assassin/Templar shenanigans. That's all they had to do...

Frogster8,

That’s pretty much all I’ve wanted in a game since I played AC4 or the pirates of the carribean on xbox.

So much so that while at uni doing comp sci I started trying to get into game dev just to learn that knowing how to program was such a fraction of requirement, I couldn’t make 2D or 3D assets at all, just don’t have the flair for it and didn’t want to use bought assets.

Still waiting for somebody to make my dream game

dan1101, do games w No Man's Sky Echoes Update Trailer

I wish I liked this game. It is exactly the sort of game I like, with seamless planetary landings and such. But I just have no enthusiasm for it.

meepmeep,

As wide as an ocean, as deep as a puddle sadly.

WhiteTiger,
@WhiteTiger@sh.itjust.works avatar

As soon as you’ve been to like 5 planets, you’ve experienced everything. At least they have base building I guess. Too bad their VR port was trash.

Saledovil,

And a lot of the features don’t have a reason to engage with them. E.g. Vehicles. You get a spaceship at the start, so most of the vehicles you get later are very much a downgrade. And that Exo Mech which had an entire update dedicated to it. To me, it just illustrated why mecha are a silly concept, namely everything you can do with them can be done better with other vehicles. The game is basically a toybox, and none of the toys really keep my attention.

orbitz,

Just wanted to comment that land vehicles have their purpose because take off in the ship takes a noticeable amount of fuel (though not as bad as it used to be) It’s not bad but you can drive around to get resources in vehicle much easier (assuming you’re trying to explore a bit). Not saying you’re completely wrong or anything, once you get so far you rarely need to go resource gathering anyways.

Base building is kinda fun if you’re into it (plus you get to build the inside of your freighter like a base) and there’s lots of missions and a decent chunk of story somewhere in there. It’s pretty shallow but more like a wading pool than a puddle at least. It’s fun to relax with and wander but I tend to lose interest before I can find the new ships and all so haven’t even got a living ship yet had it since release.

dan1101,

That’s what they say about Elite Dangerous, but I played that game 254 hours. No Man’s Sky held me for maybe 5 or 10.

FracturedEel,

I got really into for like 100 hours way after they fixed everything and then I see these cool updates but don’t really have any interest in touching it again

brsrklf, do gaming w The Lost Art of Fancy PC Game Installers

Can’t watch now so not sure what’s in the video, but Lands of Lore 2 was quite fancy.

Had a parchment scroll-like UI with animated burning transitions, did creepy chants at you to test stereo sound.

Funny thing, it tested your CD-ROM drive speed too (it used to matter). Of course on a modern PC, you’d have the whole game on your (much faster) hard drive and simulate an optical drive with DOSBox or something. The installer runs its test and literally says : “Wow, your drive is fast!”

DdCno1,

That’s neat, quite different from old installers not recognizing newer hardware properly (who can blame the devs after several decades?) and instead stating that the game would not work. There was a German gaming magazine (Computer Bild Spiele) that always put a system check in front of game installers (even software installers) on their discs that would compare your system to the title’s minimum specs, using a simple stoplight (green=far exceeds requirements, yellow=just meets them, red=below minimum specs). It’s kind of similar to modern online services like “Can You Run It”.

I tried to install a very old game from one of these discs recently and it didn’t quite know what to make of the hardware. IIRC, my 32 GB of RAM was more than the developers of this check anticipated and it reported that I didn’t have enough RAM (the game needed 32 MB).

troyunrau,
@troyunrau@lemmy.ca avatar

A 32 but integer can store a number up to four billion. If measuring RAM size in integer bytes, 32GB would be 0 bytes, because that integer would wrap around four times.

Assuming windows, if you right click on the executable, you may be able to choose to run it in a compatibility mode of some sort (like XP mode or something) in which case it should report smaller memory to the game, probably.

DdCno1,

Good analysis, but I checked again and must have either misremembered or different versions of the same test were different in this regard: Upon running one of these again (this one is from 2002), it reported 32 GB of RAM as 2 GB of RAM and gave the system the green light. Notice how it also reported a fabulously high speed for the (virtual) CD-ROM drive:

https://beehaw.org/pictrs/image/7188b201-6fa7-42b3-955c-8d3a05dca932.webp

You’re right though that running it in XP SP2 compatibility mode results in the check recognizing much less RAM:

https://beehaw.org/pictrs/image/aa5b794a-dbb4-438f-aa55-84a641cb0064.webp

I never thought that this compatibility mode would limit the amount of memory that is available to an application. In fact, this is the case with all other working compatibility modes as well (Vista, 7, 8 - 95 and 98/ME don’t work with this application).
