brihuang95, (edited ) do games w Ubisoft execs and employees arrested over sexual misconduct allegations
@brihuang95@sopuli.xyz avatar

Didn’t Ubisoft have similar allegations just a few years ago too?? Or am i misremembering

EDIT: It appears that these shenanigans are from three years ago. Link

newthrowaway20,

I was thinking the same thing. It gets difficult to keep track of all the sexual abuse allegations between game studios.

phuntis,
@phuntis@sopuli.xyz avatar

same ones it’s just taking quite a long time

angrymouse,

I believe you are thinking about Blizzard

brihuang95,
@brihuang95@sopuli.xyz avatar

I do remember Blizzard’s fiasco, but after a quick search it seems like Ubisoft did have a misconduct probe just a few years ago

Puzzle_Sluts_4Ever,

If you click the article you’ll see this is tied to the 2020 allegations. Which were mostly following on previous issues but nobody cared about abuse back then.

Zellith,

Jim Sterling (while not everyones cup of tea) did a bunch of stuff on them. Eg. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRhYT5Lgp98

MeanEYE,
@MeanEYE@lemmy.world avatar

Not misremembering, it’s Ubisoft after all and Yves loves his sexually assaulting friends. And he said he was sorry for liking them, mkay… that makes it not so bad… in his head at least.

lorty, do games w Vague Patch Notes: Default MMORPG genre features change over time, and that’s OK
@lorty@lemmy.ml avatar

The move towards more solo play is just a natural consequence of players wanting to be as efficient as possible with their time. Needing other people causes downtime, even longer ones if you need them to organize manually.

NocturnalMorning, do games w Casually Classic: WoW Classic’s leveling journey shows how much retail has lost its way

Classic wow is just grinding. I didn’t play it until they re-released it, and it took me a week to get to level 12. That’s kind of unreasonable.

ExpectedWall,

That’s pathetic ngl an average casual could get to 12 within 4 hours

NocturnalMorning,

That’s easy now, but definitely not a thing when classic wow was around.

Edit: I looked it up, average time to 60 is 30 days in classic wow. Making your 4 hour remark not right.

Ashtear,

While four hours would be fast for a new player, 1-10 is very doable in one sitting for those familiar with the game. Early levels are fast; the bulk of those 30 days are later levels. The 50’s in particular are a slog.

dogslayeggs,

It’s not linear. Levels 55-60 took me a week in Vanilla. 45-55 was almost 2 weeks, too; since the quests and dungeons at that level range are sparse. 20-40 was about a week. 1-20 was about a week and a half.

Classic took much less time than Vanilla.

criitz,

Most people can get to level 12 in like two hours

NocturnalMorning,

Yeah, in the modern game. Vanilla wow, that is not the case. Why do I keep having to repeat myself.

Goronmon,

No he means in the vanilla game. The first 10 levels go extremely quickly if you have even a basic idea is what you are doing.

dogslayeggs,

You have to keep repeating yourself because you are wrong. I played Vanilla in 2006 (about a year after it came out) and also played Classic when it came out. Vanilla might have taken me a week to get to 12, I can’t remember anymore; but it was my first MMO and first RPG, my first time playing a social game and didn’t know how to group to quest or even respond to people whispering me, and didn’t have any friends giving me advice on how to play or know what internet resources to use to speed things up. I didn’t even know I could speed things up.

With Classic I was probably to level 10 in a night after work. I haven’t leveled a fresh character in Retail since Cataclysm, so I have no idea how fast it is these days.

ZugZug, do games w 19-year-old EverQuest II’s 20th expansion, Ballads of Zimara, launches today

BigBlackCockroach, do games w Diablo IV is free-to-play on PC through Battle.net until Monday
@BigBlackCockroach@lemmy.world avatar

The first hit is always free, then once you are hooked you have to pay. Interesting how gaming-companies have now come to resemble crack-dealers…

d3Xt3r,

But that only works if it’s good enough to get you hooked in the first place…

Phegan, do games w Diablo IV unleashes the Gauntlet, its first PvE competitive game mode, today

Carighan,

I sure hope so, as someone who grew up with gauntlet everything else would be an insult.

stolid_agnostic, do games w 19-year-old EverQuest II’s 20th expansion, Ballads of Zimara, launches today

I played this game back in like 2001-2002. Can’t believe it’s still going.

Madison420,

Original EverQuest is still going and it’s from 91. Now it’s real by iirc a Russian company but same game.

PositiveNoise,
@PositiveNoise@kbin.social avatar

Everquest was released in 1999

Madison420,

Sounds right but still.

PositiveNoise,
@PositiveNoise@kbin.social avatar

Everquest II was released in 2004. It is pretty crazy that they are still releasing expansions for it. And it's kinda crazy that I played it for at least a hundred hours earlier this year during a nostalgia binge.

stolid_agnostic,

Oh gosh you’re right, it was EverQuest 1 that I played.

LostWanderer, do games w Daybreak bought Palia studio Singularity 6 and aims to bring the game to launch

Wow, I’m surprised too! I wondered if Palia was going to make it due to the financial struggles Singularity 6 had faced. I’m hoping the Palia business model gets adjusted so that it can trickle in more funding.

gnomesaiyan,
@gnomesaiyan@lemmy.world avatar

Agreed, as they weren’t going to survive with their overpriced cosmetic shop being the only source of income. I will admit, I’m a bit worried with Daybreak picking it up, as they have a track record of ruining/killing games (personal experience), but I’m really hoping my feelings are misplaced.

LostWanderer,

I didn’t know that Daybreak had a history of messing up games! Huh, I’m a bit concerned now. However, Daybreak could turn their bad track record around. It remains to be seen though.

As to their business model, yeah, Singularity 6 could never have survived on overpriced cosmetics that used fake currency to induce more spending. That was a dark pattern choice which gave me pause, I couldn’t justify buying a cosmetic item.

gnomesaiyan,
@gnomesaiyan@lemmy.world avatar

I picked up a few outfits last month because I wanted to support them, but now I’m gun-shy. I’m not entirely thrilled at this prospect. If they add combat or start adding any stereotypical MMO crap (gachapon, pay2win, etc), I’m definitely out; I’ll go play Disney Dreamlight Valley instead.

LostWanderer,

Of course, Disney Dreamlight still has a premium currency, but at least it isn’t as bad as gachapon, pay2win. Apparently, meeting weekly goals on the free Starpath and finding chests will net the player some Moonstone. Starpath is basically like a ‘battlepass’ except since this game has no combat, it’s more like a ‘living your life’ pass, free and premium in nature. I might pass on Disney Dreamlight Valley because encouraging corpos to utilize these curses in the gaming world feels…counterproductive to me.

dogslayeggs, do games w Lord of the Rings Online goes into a final stretch of Corsairs of Umbar testing

TIL LOTRO is still a thing. I remember being so excited and hopeful that it could compete with WoW so I could have an alternative scratch for my MMORPG itch. I just never found it very fun or as intuitive (to me).

echo64, do games w Final Fantasy XIV will launch on Xbox on March 21

whilst i’m happy for more people to have access to games, you really gotta wonder how many people are going to jump into this on xbox. It’s not no-one of course, but it’s not gonna be many

blackluster117,
@blackluster117@possumpat.io avatar

To be fair, they have a pretty large PS userbase and the game is very accessible through controller. I know I would’ve gotten onto it on Xbox if that was an option when I was still on console.

lorty,
@lorty@lemmy.ml avatar

Just an anecdote, but on the ffxiv subreddit and discords I lurk around there have been a LOT of xbox players going through the free trial for the first time. Considering you can play a lot for free and the series S being somewhat cheap, I can see this being a fair boon to the game.

Hyphlosion, (edited )
@Hyphlosion@donphan.social avatar

If FF XIV becomes available fully on Gamepass, I’ll definitely give it my time. Yes, I know about the trial and stuff. But I’m not going to pay a subscription to play the full game when I’m already paying for Gamepass. No thank you.

MIDItheKID,

You dropped an X.

I was really confused for a moment. With that said, FFIV is a great game and I had fun with the 3D remake. I never got around to playing “The After Years” though.

Hyphlosion,
@Hyphlosion@donphan.social avatar

Woops my bad. The brain fog’s been real today.

Goronmon,

FFXIV will always require a subscription outside of the free trial. Game Pass will only give you the base game. But not all the expansions and only 30 days of playtime.

It’s still a subscription MMO.

Hyphlosion,
@Hyphlosion@donphan.social avatar

I understand that, but I absolutely refuse to pay a subscription for a single game, no matter how good it is. Especially since I’m already paying for a Gamepass subscription.

That’s just how I roll.

Kit,

I have to imagine that it will be similar to when FFXI dropped on Xbox 360 after being a PC/PS2 exclusive for years. At that time, it increased the player base dramatically and introduced an entirely new demographic of player to the mmo. It really breathed new life into the game.

Same. The highlight of this game for me was the 5 minute conversation I had with a co-worker about it. Good times.

MrHandyMan, do games w New World outlines a partial roadmap for the first few months of 2024

What even happened to New World? It seemed like a relatively popular game when it came out, but then just disappeared.

Aquila,

Heard it was grindy AF

baascus,

Max level gear grind and absence of any endgame content.

simple,

I hear a bit from my friends that really enjoy the game, they play whenever a new update is out but there doesn’t seem to be that much content or staying power compared to most MMOs.

illi,

It was popular because it was big MMO launch bu cit was a mess that was best enjoyed from afar. Year after (when I started playing) it got better and I quite enjoyed it. It does some things extremely right (combat is fun, gathering is satisfying, it’s super pretty) but some aspects like questing is medicore.

I also feel like they still don’t really know what they are doing with it, it lacks vision from where I’m standing. I still hope it will somehow thrive though.
