Its a nice flashback to pretty much every mechanic of the original, from traffic blocks to rhythm blocks, keys and jump pads. Every major character is there as well, no Mr. Oshiro though, he’s probably still fixing the Hotel.

Madaline is so round and cute!

The last Pokemon game I played was Y. It was largely the same game as Blue and Gold. This expands on the concept in fun, crazy ways, and it's got me intrigued.

Fiivemacs,

This isn’t pokemon…

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

I mean, it isn't but also it is, in the same way Lies of P isn't Bloodborne.

TommySalami,

I haven’t purchased (yet) but that’s exactly why it caught my attention and it seems to be the way they wanted to be seen.

TwilightVulpine,

The creature designs are similar to Pokémon but that's where it begins and ends. Palworld is a survival sandbox with creature collecting, it doesn't even have turn-based battles. It's far more similar to Ark or Rust than Pokémon.

If anyone wanted a game that "is but isn't Pokémon" they should look into TemTem or Cassette Beasts.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

Different degrees of shaking up the formula. This is Pokemon-but-survival, and I've got another game in my backlog already that's Pokemon-but-metroidvania.

TwilightVulpine,

Yeah, but I would say that already makes it more markedly different, even compared to, say, Monster Hunter Stories. Sure, there's cutesy creatures which gives it some similar aesthetics but the gameplay experience is not even remotely similar.

Compared to Lies of P which looks and plays like Bloodborne, it's not really that close.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

Heh, maybe I'm splitting hairs, but if you want a game "like Pokemon", they've been making exactly that game for 30 years, but there's only a handful of games in the ballpark of Bloodborne. If you want the fantasy of roaming a world, catching creatures, and battling with them, there are lots of ways to skin that cat that GameFreak and Nintendo haven't been doing that aren't at odds with preserving those core pieces. Likewise, I don't enjoy Monster Hunter, but some of its core pieces are present in the likes of Horizon and Mercenary Kings, and I love those games for taking the high level parts of Monster Hunter that do work for me.

TwilightVulpine,

I get it, but part of my point is that there are games that are very much like Pokémon for someone who wants 90% of that with a little bit of a different twist. Meanwhile I'm seeing some people looking into Palworld and going "Wait is this Minecraft? I wanted Pokémon with guns."

Except they removed all traces of dungeons/caves (they are simple hallways with no exploration) and puzzles

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

To be fair, those were so simple that they were barely a challenge when I was 9 years old. When I played Y as an adult, they probably wouldn't have even felt like puzzles.

Bit sad they aren’t exploring removing the - IMO unnecessary - broadness of the item + skill-up system for something like the talents HotS had (or even better some sort of small branching talent tree), just to keep evolving the genre.

But I can also understand it, since well, they have an established playerbase and this is probably more a refresh than a “true” successor.

InquisitiveApathy,

Yeah I wouldn’t expect them to reinvent the wheel at this point. I think the only major difference that should reasonably be expected is in the change to the newer Unreal Engine. Better graphics, better optimization in the codebase(hopefully), and better performance. Otherwise I expect everything to be similar, but it’s too early to say anything for certain I suppose.

I only played the NDS version of this game which definitely included Yoshi, Luigi, and Wario as playable characters. And a multiplayer mode where each character was Yoshi and could put on hats to play as Mario, Luigi, or Wario. Was any of that in the N64 version of the game?

TALL421,
@TALL421@lemmy.one avatar

No. DS only. N64 Mario 64 is only Mario, no multiplayer. But having grown up on the ds version as well, i would just like to say all that stuff is rad.

echoplex21, do games w The Game Awards Winner Speeches We Didn't Get to Hear - IGN

Yeah it was pretty sad. They should either separate out the reveals from the awards. Or just make the event longer. I totally get why they’ll do reveals though. It makes the event more exciting and more eyes on the stream, but they should give the developers their due.

victron, do games w Zelda Producer Eiji Aonuma Doesn't Really Care About the Series' Chronology
@victron@programming.dev avatar

Who does?

Grangle1,

The “timeline” was a big debate in the Zelda fandom/community for a long time until the Hyrule Historia book introduced an “official timeline” that featured a split three-way timeline centered around Ocarina of Time as the source of the split. That was released after Skyward Sword. Breath of the Wild had some discussion about where it fits but wasn’t really seen as too big a deal, then Tears of the Kingdom all but straight up ignored the “timeline” and introduced a new “canon” founding of the Kingdom of Hyrule, which while I’ve long stopped paying attention to the fandom, I could imagine the timeline debate starting all over again. TLDR: some people take video game lore really seriously.

Zahille7,

All you need to do to figure that out is spend literally any amount of time in an Elder Scrolls forum

victron,
@victron@programming.dev avatar

I’m late 30s. Never played a TES game before. I just started Skyrim last night (it’s awesome, btw). I don’t plan to come close to that fandom ever lol

Zahille7,

There’s some good discussion that can come out of it.

But the usual stuff is weird political shitposting, and actual heated political arguments as if any of it really matters.

wildginger,

Ive always found it odd that people having fun trying to establish a games lore is “taking it too seriously.”

God forbid someone have fun the way you dont, I guess?

Grangle1,

Oh, nothing wrong with it. Just pointing out that people put a lot of time and effort into it.

victron,
@victron@programming.dev avatar

As a proud owner of that wonderful book, I get it. But people need to chill; trying to stick to a chronology, an IP almost 40 years old, seriously? That shit would prevent the series to reinvent itself. I think it’s for the best if we all forget about that. It was nice for a while, tho.

How would you stop bagging? Detect if someone brakes when moving to a lower place vs getting hit with items? That’s a bold change.

Bananablob,

How they implemented it it is you can’t get a strong item if you pick-up the item box while being stopped (like as it respawns with no forward speed), by going in reverse or picking up the same one multiple times.

ampersandrew, do gaming w Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty Passes 4.3 Million Sales - IGN
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

Back of the napkin math says they more than broke even on their $80M investment into the game post-launch. I enjoyed the game at launch (which I know wasn't necessarily the norm), and I largely enjoyed the expansion. Unfortunately, this is what I have to scratch my FPS campaign itch these days, but it's still a pretty good one of those combined with a pretty good RPG. It would especially be nice to see them up the ante on the RPG aspects, because next to Baldur's Gate 3 this year, you don't get anywhere near the same sense of freedom and creativity.

wolfshadowheart,
@wolfshadowheart@kbin.social avatar

I also enjoyed the game on release, I had very few bugs and the ones I did encounter I was able to work around in various ways. The most memorable one was a bug where killing the enemies would prevent the next objective from being scannable, preventing it from continuing and completion. Everything else was pretty minimal and I was able to 100% the game. Post game I spent modding which I also got a lot of enjoyment out of a little over 200 hours total in the game.

Haven't been able to get to Phantom Liberty yet, and I haven't started a new playthrough for the update be has I'm attached to my save (which is silly lol). I'll get to it.

I feel you on the lack of compelling FPS games these days though. Like Dishonored, but with guns!
