They do make changes throughout the series, but every new game is a complete reset to a basic game so they can sell you all the DLC and expansions to make it into a full game.
shadps4.net to be precise. Differs from other emulators by not emulating the hardware, but by reimplementing the API, from what I’ve read. More like Wine than eg. rpcs3.net
If two platforms share compatibility then developers can choose to target the weaker system and release on both.
For some games this might involve a bit of compromise and cause resentment with the owners of the more powerful system, but for other (simple) games it might not involve any compromise at all.
Either way there are a lot of Switch consoles in the wild and there will be some publisher support for the Switch for a few years yet.
As an example from the other side of the fence ps4 is still getting titles:
You might get one dual console launch game like twilight princess or BotW but that’s it. If switch 1 could run elden ring or FF7R they’d have had ports years ago
The first game especially was so ahead of its time. You could explore the entire overworld without any loading screens while running at a smooth 60FPS.
Having played the first game a little late, I rushed off to spend my savings on the sequel as soon as it came out. I was not ready for the dark turn it took. It was like someone had snuck GTA 3 into a kids game without any one noticing, going from a cute but kind of dirty kids game to a dark city with cars and guns where you could run over people and get into a fight with the cops.
You know, I was really sick and tired when they updated the nvidia shield with the new android TV version that makes most of the screen show stuff that are basically ads. It didn’t even let me show only stuff I was interested in and this constant “oh you are hovering over this item for 0.000001s so you seem to be interested in this, let me start the video for you with audio” no god damnit I was reading something else or got a text.
I had to install a different launcher so that I could only show on the screen what I actually wanted to see. I have basically removed or reduced all ads as much as I ca.
Lately, I was at my parents place and they don’t have that stuff. Even the 1.5 minutes of ads for a free service is so disruptive to me watching something.
What has this to do with PlayStation?
Well, on the shield you are still able to install a custom launcher that is more to your liking, you could disable the internet access and completely stream your own local content. But on the PS, you don’t have that option and are completely at the mercy of what they think you should watch and see on your screen that you bought with a console that you also bought with your own money.
“In terms of the Final Fantasy that I think is the ‘most complete’; I believe Final Fantasy 6 comes close, and does stand out above the other Final Fantasies, especially because it was the last Final Fantasy to use pixel art in all of its visual expression,” Sakaguchi said.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they had a launcher before and they’re releasing a “Store” now that Google and Apple have been slapped with anti-trust lawsuits. I think your best bet would be asking the folks at the Epic forums.
