TheEighthDoctor, do games w Stardew Valley creator confirms he's made "a ton of progress" on update 1.6

Still no news about haunted chocolatier?

dom,

He’s one dude.

RizzRustbolt,

For now.

But once my clones are complete…

Sphks,
@Sphks@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

It would not be the first time that a second game from one successful developer will never come to life. I wish that I am wrong.

BellaDonna,

I too think he went back to Stardew Valley because he’s either burnt out, or doesn’t know where to take, Haunted Chocolatier.

Eggyhead, do gaming w Are there too many video game remakes and remasters?
@Eggyhead@kbin.social avatar

For older games that are difficult to install or run by modern means., I think remakes and remasters are completely justified. Upgrades for older games to support newer technologies is nice, but something like TLoU Part 1 getting two remasters on a platform that has no issue running the first remaster already seems more exploitative and a waste of resources than conservational. If it sells like hotcakes, though, who am I to judge?

GONADS125, do games w Why gaming is so important to players with chronic pain

This really hit close to home for me. I was diagnosed with “hyper-mobility” when I was a teenager, but my doctor told me it was kinda a catch-all diagnosis. He told me it is degenerative and the only “treatment” is exercise to have tone muscle support my joints. Other provides have echoed this over the years.

I haven’t had a day free of pain since 2nd grade. It affects all my joints and I have frequent dislocations. I’ve been able to manage it with exercise for years and it’s provided me with an insane pain tolerance. But covid + RSV + pneumonia and secondary infections + long covid had me on my ass for so long, I neglected my joints and I’ve been in the worst flare up of my life.

I have to rehab slowly, but every time I exercise, it causes such bad systemic inflammation and cervicogenic migraines. It’s a vicious cycle that’s hard to break. Dry herb (Volcano) vaping medical marijuana and then gaming is literally the only time I feel an escape right now.

It helps me to disassociate from my pain and focus my attention on something so engrossing that my brain can’t spare attention to the ‘dulled’ perception of pain. It’s not like the pain is gone, but it’s changed and it’s a momentary relief. But even if only momentarily, finding some sort of respite is essential for your sanity.

I would still be here without gaming, but my quality of life would be a hell of a lot worse.

Yeah, I’ve got EDS, and gaming is one of the few things I can do and not risk being too much in pain (I do have to watch out for my fingers spraining and dislocating, though). Days when I can’t walk very well, I can still sit down and play a game.

GONADS125,

EDS is what my last provider mentioned might be a better diagnosis. The joint symptoms fit, but I definitely don’t have the skin or blood cell issues that can present in EDS. Which I’m definitely grateful of.

stopthatgirl7,
!deleted7120 avatar

Well, there are thirteen different types of EDS (most of them are REALLY rare, though), based on which connective tissue they impact the most. The most common are hypermobile, classical, and vascular. I have the hypermobile type, which mostly impacts joints. Classical EDS can have skin issues, and vascular is the type where it can cause your blood vessels to rip open inside of you. hEDS is the least likely to kill you, but most likely to negative impact your quality of life.

GONADS125,

Appreciate the info. Definitely fits.

BD1sHappyFeet,

I never thought about it like that, but that explains why I played through Borderlands 2 over and over again while doing chemo. Everything hurt but I could still mow down some baddies.

So… right away, then? 😉

EtherealMoon, do games w Cyberpunk's storytelling makes Starfield seem ancient
@EtherealMoon@lemmy.world avatar

Bethesda has put themselves in an awkward spot by promoting niche and deep RPG mechanics for so long, and then becoming such a AAA developer with entire keynotes dedicated to previewing them that they no longer want to risk making deeper complex mechanics because they’re scared of “confusing” the base audience.

I want to say they need to take Starfield as a wakeup call, in comparison to games like BG3. But they don’t need to, because Gamepass numbers are practically imaginary sales numbers, and we’re just going to hear about how well it sold for the next half-decade.

nottheengineer, do games w Payday 3 players endure second consecutive day of server issues, preventing them from playing

They had three days of load testing and the infrastructure still failed on launch.

Sounds like the devs knew it wouldn’t work but management insisted on launching anyways.

vsh,

Meanwhile Larian (BG3 devs) held the newest patch for one additional day to test it out and make sure it works properly. You really see the difference.

FurtiveFugitive, do games w Unity reportedly considering cap on hugely controversial per-install fees

How about you don’t change the terms people agreed to retroactively. How about if you said “no royalties”, you stick with no royalties and don’t come up with some bullshit fee that works exactly like a royalty.

Jamie, do games w Unity reportedly considering cap on hugely controversial per-install fees
@Jamie@jamie.moe avatar

I had a feeling something like this was gonna come. It’s an age old trick.

Do something that makes people mad and gets attention.

Let it stew for a few days while you’re “considering” things.

Come out and say you made a mistake and the initial plan was misguided, present the thing you were actually planning to do instead.

Brag about how much you “care about feedback” while still doing what you want

Chariotwheel,

It doesn't work the same here as with B2C products. Excluding hobby developers who wouldn't been hit either way. most people paying for Unity are trying to make a living and a company eradically throwing the pricing model around is not a good look when there are altrnatives around.

People can and will go to alternatives for new projects. Unreal, if you want a marketplace and impressive 3D and Godot if you want FOSS. Not to mention the otber game engines.

It's about money here, in some cades not little amount of money.

papabobolious, do games w Grand Theft Auto 5 turns 10 years old

I really love the world of GTA V, it has a lot to explore and is beautiful. I just wish the driving physics to explore it weren’t so utterly boring. GTA IV had great arcade driving.

thorbot, (edited )

When you say “Arcade driving” if you mean “zero friction simulation” then yes, sure. I went back to GTA4 recently because I loved the story and after 2k hours in GTAV, driving in 4 makes me want to kill myself

After coming off San Andreas when 4 came out, I figured it was the same as SA with the skill system that made the cars less slidey the better CJ got. But nope. It’s just like that. It gives the vehicles more sense of weight, but it’s too slidey unless the road is meant to be black ice. I feel like 5 has the best arcade like driving. Especially with the addition of being able to control your pitch and roll in a car and not just on a bike. It’s not too real, but it’s not super cartoonish. It’s a perfect middle area.

papabobolious,

I mean real damage, spinning out, hitting a curb actually feeling like hitting a curb and overall feel. Gta V has too much grip and you can easily just take a sports car up a mountain offroad. It’s soulless.

n3er0o,
@n3er0o@lemmy.ml avatar

And I though I was the only one that enjoyed the more skill-based handling in IV! In V every car has Trackmania levels of grip lol

Kiosade, do games w Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth gets a February 2024 release date on PS5

They need to stop limiting these games to the PS5 and release them on PC as well, and not 2 years late.

Pavidus,
@Pavidus@lemmy.world avatar

I’m a massive FFVII fan, and that 2 year wait ALMOST lost my interest. I finally picked it up, where it remained the most expensive game I had purchased for a good long while. I was happy with that, because I heard “the other installments will be included!”

Guess I heard them wrong. They lost me. I won’t pay 90 bucks again for another chapter of a 2 year old remake of a 30 year old game.

the_q,

I heard it’ll be a 3 month wait so not too bad.

Kiosade,

Oh good, 3 months is not bad at all, if that’s the case

Fixbeat, do games w Starfield review - a game about exploration, without exploration

Eh, Bethesda has always been incompetent at making games. Always full of promise, but so clunky and amateurish all the way back to Arena.

LEDZeppelin, (edited ) do games w Unity bosses sold stock days before development fees announcement, raising eyebrows

SEC: we don’t see nothing, we don’t hear nothing, we don’t do nothing.

Arcane_Trixster,

It’s been a day since the announcement, and a few hours since people noticed the stock dump. What the fuck do you want them to do? Fully research the case, send out subpoenas, call hearings, listen to testimony and level fines all in less than 24 hours?

Cosmonaut_Collin, do games w Starfield getting DLSS support, FOV slider, HDR calibration, and more
@Cosmonaut_Collin@lemmy.world avatar

This is stuff that should be available on release day for all fps games. I can’t believe companies keep getting away with releasing beta version of games as a full release.

redcalcium,

Could’ve been worse. Microsoft actually delayed Starfield for 2 years so Bethesda can supposedly fixed as much bugs they can before release.
