Aztechnology, w What games had easy soft locks that prevented you from either progressing or getting a true ending?

FF12 had some bullshit chest near the beginning of the game… If you opened it you lost the ability to 100% the game and get the Zodiac spear ( reportedly some ability to get one in a very tedious grunts fashion but it’s been ages)

Basically the straw that broke the camel’s back for me with ff… The games story and combat was already a let down after they dropped the turn based combat like all of them ff1-ff10

But yeah generally I dislike many soft lock mechanics or illogical things that punish you for just playing the game… Oftentimes these were put in games just to sell strategy guides.

I didn’t play half life for like 2 years.

fosforus, (edited ) w Extra Punctuation: Bioshock Has the Best Beginning of Any Game Ever

This video has also the best beginning of any game review ever. The binary moral choice bollocks is a horrible trend that should go away already. I guess Bioshock perhaps started it?

Seems like nobody mentioned Undertale’s beginning. That was pretty good. But I’m easily swayed by when the soundtrack is superb, and Undertale’s certainly is one of the best ones I’ve heard in 30 years of gaming.

edit Yes, Undertale also has the moral choice bollocks in it, but I dare to say it was so central to the plot that it was fine there.

CarbonatedPastaSauce,

They definitely didn’t start it. The first KOTOR (and most subsequent BioWare games) had a similar moral framework activated by dialogue choices.

fosforus,

Ah, thanks. Somehow I’ve managed to miss that series completely although I hear about it all the time.

CarbonatedPastaSauce,

If you have any interest in that style of RPG, I’d say playing the first KOTOR is time well spent. The graphics are junk but building your team in a Jedi / Scoundrel shooter looter and solving all the dumb locals problems in sometimes hilarious ways. I guess what I’m trying to say is most of the gameplay is still solid. Think FF active time battle for encounters, it’s very similar to that. Check it out!

fosforus,

Yeah, and now that I think about it, perhaps KOTOR’s moral system doesn’t fall under “binary moral choice bollocks”, since the Yedi vs Sith -thing is a fundamental thing of that universe. Would’ve been silly if that choice didn’t exist in that game.

li10,

To be honest, I’d prefer binary good/bad moral choice options in a game, rather than half assed stories with multiple fake choices with no consequences.

Give me a good story line or an evil one, but make both of them high quality. Or, just stick to one.

BG3 did multiple choices properly. Whereas Starfield (or any Bethesda game) is just a waste of time having dialogue options.

fosforus, (edited )

If you wanted a realistic karma system, the only consequence of doing shitty things would be shitty reputation, and only if you’re caught doing the shitty thing. A powerful enough metaphysical (stretching “realistic” here a bit) being might perhaps catch every time you do.

And it depends on the listener too. Some people should stomach more shit, while some might drop you from their internal list of “good people” on the first mistake.

But all this is probably difficult to pull off in a story-based game.

AdmiralShat, (edited ) w [Rumor] Nintendo Switch 2 reportedly uses Nvidia's DLSS to boost frame rates

While there’s a current DLSS thread, am I the only one who actually likes the aesthetics of DLSS, regardless of FPS? It adds a softness to the whole image that reduces eye strain for me and make the game more cinematic almost.

RonSwanson,

From what I understand, DLSS is also the best anti aliaser there is. No jaggies makes everything easier on the eyes

Send_me_nude_girls,
@Send_me_nude_girls@feddit.de avatar

The recent versions are much better. But it also depends on the engine. I haven’t played Cyberpunk2077 since release, but there the trailing shadows of moving people and cars were very visible. Hopefully these issues are a thing of the past.

AdmiralShat,

I remember the Witcher 3 had some pretty shitty interactions with DLSS, too

Amir,

There’s “DLAA” which has the DLSS softness without the upscaling part. Some games support it, would recommend checking it out.

Ascyron, w RuneScape reaches mostly negative reviews on steam after introducing Hero pass

As a casual off-and-on player of this game for at least 19 years, I’m not opposed to this battle pass. It replaces the “must play 7-days-a-week to get max rewards” task system with one that gives you freedom to play when and how you want.

Too early for me to give an informed opinion on whether the rewards of the pass are worthwhile, but I’m a fan of the intent behind it at least!

50gp, (edited )

looks like there are few reasons for the outrage

  1. they deleted daily challenges which were reworked like a year ago and replaced it with this worse implementation (these gave lots of xp, not anymore)
  2. this is the main content update for the month?
  3. they promised to listen for feedback, but in true jagex fashion they ignore all mtx related feedback
  4. battle pass comes with buffs for some content which may spiral out of control as time goes on
  5. the game has sub fee, loot boxes, store and a battle pass which is fuckton of monetisation for less content updates than 10 years ago
  6. battle pass is LONG grind to get everything, and its probably limited time only

Waker, w Diablo 4 GM confirms “annual expansions” for the game

Honestly, having know this I wouldn’t have bought D4 in the first place.

It was expensive as fuck for a game that I played a week at most, and got boring. Not saying the game isn’t great on some aspects. The story and graphics are amazing but… other than that it’s not that interesting late game.

Spending 60€+ on a game that has battle passes and an ingame shop on top of it, for them to add one expansion a year after, yearly? Wtf

It’s true what they say. Blizzard has gotten greed af.

This has probably been the last game I will ever buy from them. There are already Diablo 4 private servers, I think I’ll just wait until those catch up with those expansions…

(reposting from the D4 community since this community is larger and likely will have more discussion here)

pulaskiwasright,

To me, the late game is boring because it’s not as tactical as previous Diablo games. The view is so zoomed in and the enemies are so fast, numerous, and squishy that you basically just have to chew though the closest enemies. It’s not tactical or challenging. It’s either too easy or too hard and your skill doesn’t matter at all. I beat it once and don’t feel the urge to play it again.

Waker, (edited )

I never thought about the camera but that could be one of the things that bothers me, now that I think about it…

I thought that with season 1 I’d be more hyped to play it, but it seemed so shite I couldn’t bring myself to playing it… And now, knowing that there’ll be expansions yearly, I don’t think I’ll ever bother lol.

pulaskiwasright,

That was my experience too. I tried to play seasonal content and quit after level 5.

GBU_28,

Why’d you buy it so quick? It’s not a ride the wave game where you need full lobbies, it’s an arpg that should be durable and accessable for years to come.

Waker,

You’re right. I didn’t even buy it pre order because I hate doing that and never will. So, after the game was launched, I watched some streams, the game seemed fun and no really big complaints anywhere. A couple of friends also bought the game, and told me it was fun.

And, to be honest, they weren’t wrong. The game WAS fun… Until you end the story and it’s just boring.

I played on both betas too and did enjoy the gameplay and such. Couldn’t wait for more of the story…

So that’s how I ended up buying it 1week or so after release.

rmuk, w Peter Molyneux says he regrets over-promising his games

“But I promise that you’re going to be blown away by the promising I’ll be doing in the future. My promising will be authentic, intuitive, life-like and indistinguishable from the real thing. This is promising like you’ve never experienced before, and these are promises they will still sound assuring twenty years after they’re made. I’m so proud of the team for the work they’ve done on this and I’ve promised them a pay rise, holiday in Bora Bora and a blowjob from a $10000-a-night hooker with a mouthful of warm honey. That’s the kind of promises I’m talking about, promises that will change the way we think about promises and, if you have a moment, I’d like to make you some promises too…”

ricecooker, w Peter Molyneux says he regrets over-promising his games

Being able to say this out loud is a big step. +1 emotional maturity. +1 admitting he’s got a problem.

I’ll not deny that he has passion, but someone really should have reigned him in. It only hurt the game when it inevitably never delivered. Who comes up with game features on the spot to the media? No respect for the people who actually have to make the game, sheesh.
