Crayphish, w EA’s CEO teases ‘very exciting’ projects in development at Respawn

Andrew Wilson and my personal definition of ‘very exciting’ likely differ greatly, so I’m not going to pay attention to anything until we see the products. I suspect he is very excited to make a lot of money on a bunch of new Star Wars games.

inclementimmigrant, w Baldur's Gate 3's success is not about setting a new "standard"

I mean it should and they didn’t set a new standard, they just brought back a old standard of having a developer and publisher actually giving a fuck about making a good, complete game.

vasametropolis, (edited )

This is the perspective that is totally forgotten and missed by most engaging in the discussion. Not to diminish Larian’s achievement, but they literally busted out the old playbook. Credit where it’s due, but BG3 shouldn’t be controversial - it should be the standard because that’s what the standard used to be.

Sylvartas, (edited )

That’s what the standard used to be, because it used to be much cheaper to satisfy. For indies, if you try to do a quarter of what Larian achieved there in production value, and your game doesn’t sell, your studio is dead. For AAA, you’ll have to fight execs/management endlessly trying to shoehorn microtransactions and/or dlc to “justify” the costs.

I’d love it to be the new standard, but this only happened because Larian is basically a huge indie imo. Which unfortunately is an anomaly.

newthrowaway20, w Baldur's Gate 3's companions were overly horny due to a bug

Yeah, me too.

Zombiepirate, w Nintendo demoed Switch 2 to developers at Gamescom
@Zombiepirate@lemmy.world avatar

Looks like still nothing on hardware specs.

I imagine they’ll keep the docked/portable form if they’re keeping the Switch name though.

Omegamanthethird, w Starfield’s Xbox exclusivity ‘yielded a better product’, Todd Howard says
@Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world avatar

I absolutely believe that exclusivity can create a better product. A company can put more resources into a game if they’re more worried about making a system seller than a profit driver.

But I don’t think for a moment that it benefited the game by creating a focus for the developers by limiting the consoles.

eltimablo,

Back in the day, console exclusivity meant you could take advantage of system-specific features such as the ridiculously powerful SIMD core in the PS3. Now, 2/3 major consoles have nearly identical hardware, and the third is an overclocked smartphone, so there's no real benefit to system lock-in.

Omegamanthethird,
@Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world avatar

Seriously, if they said this about the Switch, nobody would bat an eye. But it seems to be easier to simultaneously develop for PS5 and XBox Series than to develop for both consoles and PC, given how terrible a lot of PC ports are.

Mordachai_Shedbacon, (edited ) w Starfield and Baldur’s Gate 3 Revive Age-Old RPG Debate About Encumbrance - IGN

Jim Sterling release a video on this earlier this week
Probably just a coincidence…

Ookami38,

Holy shit I’m out of the loop. With as much respect as is possible has Jim sterling always been a woman? Like seriously I’ve seen the name a TON, but never actually watched a video lol

Now, on-topic, yeah, I agree with 100% of what she said, and said word for word some of the stuff she did just earlier today lol.

BruceTwarzen,

No she used to be a man. I used to watch his old videos on YouTube, and only a few month ago i remembered it, and looked if he had a podcast, so i started listening to the jimquisition podcasts and was really confused how he's not in it. Only then they said James Stephanie Sterling i finnaly got it. She seems to do fine, she's also a wrestler now.

Ookami38,

Yeah I caught the introduction of “James Stephanie Sterling” and was like… -record skip- wait what? Not that it matters, just was a surprise, and I couldn’t find anything specific googling lol

catshit_dogfart, w Baldur's Gate 3 on PS5 is effectively the PC version at ultra settings

I think this game could run on PS4 just fine. Turn off raytracing and a few other things and it would probably work.

But then, I guess they can’t keep releasing for the old console forever.

sadreality, (edited )

If there is money in it... Why not?

We got millions of gamers on old hardware. If they can do it, let all gamers have at it imho

Omegamanthethird,
@Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world avatar

PS5 gamers are more likely to put down $70 for a new game than PS4 players are to put down $60 on a new game. It’s probably just not a worthwhile investment.

FoundTheVegan,
@FoundTheVegan@kbin.social avatar

Consoles are expensive. Cutting off support to older equipment is rough. Keeping your entertainment "current" is a big ask for a lot of people who are already struggling. As long as people are using the old stuff, devs should do what they can inside the technical limits to extend their lifespan.

exscape,
@exscape@kbin.social avatar

There's no RT in BG3. At least not yet.

Kbin_space_program,

Given that the issue with the Xbox S is the split screen, I'd suspect that the PS4 would have the same issue.

conciselyverbose,

It seems pretty CPU limited and the CPU on last gen was dogshit from day one.

circuitfarmer,

I ran it on an i7 4790k initially and definitely felt it. I think you’re right that whatever APU is in the PS4 would scream and run.

LoafyLemon, (edited )

There's no Ray Tracing in Baldur's Gate 3.

\edit Someone already said that. Ignore.

ExploratrixLunae,

If you have a source on this, please share it - I have not found anything to corroborate that he is being replaced by AI, although the idea that this is happening is plausible and believable.

geosoco,

I think this was intended as a joke about the current state of things.

ExploratrixLunae,

That makes sense haha. I felt it worth asking due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strikes.

nantsuu,

Super Mario Wonder and the new WarioWare already seem to have a different (probably human) voice actor, you can hear it in clips.

wccrawford, w [Spoilers] Starfield's New Game Plus Is Its Most Intriguing Concept, If You Get Lucky

This actually does make me want to play the game some more. I had beat it once and started a new game+, but then got sick of doing it again. I might actually try it again soon now.

aesopjah,

Do you have to go through the long opening sequence content again in NG+? Like all the way through to getting Sam Coe? I do wish they would kinda just plop you out in the world faster like New Vegas

Weslee, (edited ) w Baldur's Gate 3 on PS5 is effectively the PC version at ultra settings

It’s runs on ultra on my 1060 gtx, I’m not surprised it runs well on consoles, the game is pretty nicely optimized

ayaya,
@ayaya@lemdro.id avatar

You probably haven’t gotten to Act 3 yet, the game is extremely CPU bound. I have a Ryzen 9 7950X and while Act 1 and 2 were basically locked to 144fps the entire time, in Act 3 I have seen dips down to the 40s.

Weslee,

Ah my CPU is pretty modern compared to the 1060, and no I’m not even into act 2 yet

PrinceHabib72,

Try turning off “Dynamic Crowds” in settings. I didn’t notice much difference in how the crowds behaved, but it supposedly simplifies their AI and pathfinding to cut down on CPU use. It helped me a lot in the city.

ShittyRedditWasBetter,

3080 + 12700k @4k. I needed to run everything in performance mode on DLSS to get even a consistent 60. Still jittery in the big areas.

holiday,

2060 super user here. I’m assuming you haven’t made it to Act 3? The game has some performance issues there. I happily turned down the graphics to continue playing smoothly but was a tad disappointed.

I’m on my second playthrough though and they have patched it since my first experience so hopefully the evil campaign runs (visually) smoother.

zanariyo,

Act 3’s issues aren’t GPU bound, it’s entirely CPU bottlenecked. It’s likely someone with a slower GPU won’t see as big a drop in performance in act 3 as you, and it’s likely you don’t see any performance gain from using DLSS in act 3. My 2080 Super was sleeping through it even at 3440x1440 on ultra while my Ryzen 7 3700x was getting thrashed.

sp6, w Baldur's Gate 3 on PS5 is effectively the PC version at ultra settings

More info from the article: quality mode is 1440p 30fps, and performance mode is 960p (upscaled to 1440p using FSR2) 60fps. Although late-game, specifically the big cities in act 3, can dip into mid-20fps range
