sp6,

I would check the linux gaming wiki’s distro recommendations: linux-gaming.kwindu.eu/index.php?title=Getting_st…

Mint is fine for daily use type stuff, but there are some odd gaming bugs. IIRC Cinnamon (Mint’s default desktop environment) specifically has higher input lag than Gnome or KDE, and Lutris dropped official Mint support due to issues from Mint’s tweaks.

I personally use Pop!_OS and it’s been pretty good, although I have been a little frustrated about the 22.04 base, as I’ve noticed some packages (like Mangohud and GOverlay) are very out of date. But aside from that, I have no complaints.

sp6,

I think the Deep Rock developers are owned by Embracer now, so I’m not sure if that counts as “indie” anymore, even if they’re still a small (and previously somewhat home-grown) studio. But it’s still a damn good game - ROCK AND STONE

I released my first game on Steam and got rid of impostor syndrome!

My first game Mushy Score is out on Steam! I have been creating games since I was a child but never felt like a real game dev. Now I finally have a game that I can show to other people.

Mushy Score is a 2D Roguelike where you fight against endless waves of enemies. Collect points and try to get a high score! I am super exited for the release !

If you like similar games go check it out: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2480740/Mushy_Score/

sp6,

Awesome work. Out of curiosity, what engine did you use and how was your experience with it?

sp6,

If you want a good laugh, check out The Looker. It’s a short satire of the Witness, free on Steam

sp6,

On the Playstation side, RPCS3 is the PS3 emulator, it’s great. There are some experimental PS4 emulators, but they aren’t ready yet.

On the Xbox side, Xenia works well as an Xbox 360 emulator; it’s not linux native though, but it might work well under wine. I’m not aware of Xbox One (or later) emulators.

On the Nintendo side, I would be surprised if a Nintendo game that couldn’t be emulated exists. Even Switch games run very well on day 1 of release.

sp6,

For Deck, you’ll likely be using EmuDeck for your emulation setup, which will install PCSX2 for PS2 games.

You can see the other available EmuDeck emulators here: emudeck.github.io/…/steamos/-does-emudeck-in…

sp6,

I think from the perspective of the employee’s reputation, it’s an important distinction, due to the “with cause” vs. “without cause” implication.

When I hear “laid off” I think the person was probably a fine employee who they just couldn’t keep around because higher-ups wanted more money. But when I hear “fired” I think “well did they take a shit on their boss’s desk or something?”

Considering less than a month ago they were making headlines for mistakenly banning linux players (but eventually unbanning them, thankfully), makes me wonder how many of those bans are false-positives.

I was one of the linux players who was banned. It took them about 8 days for them to unban me in-game, and then it took another week for my EA ban history to change from “active” to “overturned,” with an email from EA. No apology, no sort of in-game compensation, just basically a “be thankful you can play again.”

~25% of the linux players are still banned. Some definitely cheated, some I would be shocked if they cheated, just considering the amount of hours and money they had put into their account, along with how enthusiastic they were about getting themselves (and others) unbanned. So shocked that I’m almost certain they’re false positives. Which makes me hesitant to keep playing - what if that happens to me? If they treat their Steam Deck and linux users this way, is that a game I really want to support?

sp6,

Well Respawn explicitly enabling Easy Anti-Cheat’s Proton support (plus the game being Steam Deck Verified) is about as official as we’re gonna get for the vast majority of multiplayer games. I think it’s more of an issue around EA firing 99% of their QA testers…

sp6,

More info from the article: quality mode is 1440p 30fps, and performance mode is 960p (upscaled to 1440p using FSR2) 60fps. Although late-game, specifically the big cities in act 3, can dip into mid-20fps range

sp6,

*Cross-posted. Yes, I think it is relevant to all of those communities and deserves attention

sp6,

Apex is listed as Steam Deck Verified. Since Steam Deck and desktop linux use the same compatibility tool, Proton, that means both should be supported.

Additionally, the last time this happened, Apex unbanned all of the desktop linux users, which is at least a soft-confirmation that it’s supported.

sp6,

Gaming on Linux now has an article about this: gamingonlinux.com/…/linux-players-getting-banned-…

We’re up to 12 linux users banned in the past ~day
