Well, it’s surprisingly an 8/10 game graphics aside. There is no mtx, they still fix their game despite low player count on steam. (no idea how many players on the EA play/Gamepass or console. But on PC if you meet the requirement you can run the game really smoothly. (I run 6800XT so at default 1440p/60fps no issue at all. )
I originally bought it for science and see how UE5 features run on my machine from a released game, and it does surpass my expectation. Also see what’s currently possible with those UE5 tech.
It does have kinda bad luck release timing wise, but it fits a good “alt” game you can play without any commitment. (no season pass, no battle pass, no grinding requirements/mission, semi open world but the main plot can be done without doing those exploration/puzzles. ) So I’d assume the sale can last longer people can play this game with more modern PC build.
All thats well and good, but marketing simply failed. Literally the first I and many others heard of it was the 751 peak player count. Maybe itll get more popular as time goes on, but thats a hell of climb.
Lol, I bought on EGS cause I know developer will get more money out of that purchase.(12% and they don’t have to pay UE royalty for sales on EGS. I do this pretty much for all unreal engine games.)
But I think the honest hw spec probably scare off a lot of potential PC buyers of this type of game. If somehow they have a demo as show case + spec check then people might be more willing to try or even buy.
I don’t even understand the delays. They have claimed that the tools they release are the same tools they use to build out their games. Shouldn’t they already have working tools? And what really changes between the games that I can’t just use Fallout 4’s or Skyrim’s creation kit? I’ve always found this to be odd.
The tools are usually stripped down versions of their internal kits. At least, that’s what I’ve read on the topic. I don’t actually know whether that’s entirely true or to what extent if it is.
The other reason may also have to do with console modding. Getting that set up or whatever.
When Bethesda launches mod support, they will do it as a Creation Platform. They don’t want mods to merely exist, they want to control its presentation.

Fuck, the entire time SC was worked on we had Elite Dangerous get funded, released expanded and crash and burned. No man’s sky launched from being “Sean Lied People Died” to the biggest redemption story in gaming and Starfield went from a twinkle in Todd Howards eye to complete. Two Everspace games. Rebel Galaxy 1&2. X4!! Fuck me.
What happened to Elite Dangerous? I used to play quite a bit before I had to move and ended up on horrible internet. I've finally got good internet but haven't gotten back into it yet.
Last I played, the arc was humans attempted firing a weapon targeting Thargoids and it failed. Thargoids got mad and attacked human systems in the bubble.
There was also some unhappiness around their spacelegs expansion and the subsequent end of development for console versions. I stopped playing since then not because of any problems but because I got into other games.
I was on Xbox (where my friends were). Once Odyssey flopped they cancelled any new updates to the console versions and after a couple of years haven’t No Man Sky’d Odyssey yet.
They only really focus on combat and they go out of their way to make progression difficult. Storylines take literal decades to progress and there isn’t really endgame content. Plus they haven’t delivered on half of the features they promised.

It’s my point of view that they created so much friction in the gameplay loop that players generally prefer logging to get their materials or whatever they need, and FDev’s policy is “sure, whatever,” because then they don’t have to improve the gameplay.

Not technically, but yes. I don’t remember the component, but there’s one specific widget that you need to get in order to build one of the ship launched fighters (iirc). You have to complete a (decently fun imo) gameplay loop, and huzzah! You get the widget.
But you need fifteen of them.
And they don’t respawn while you’re in the instance, no matter how long you wait.

One thing the others didn’t mention: They released a multilayer expansion, if you try to play in co-op the game crashes, they announced they wouldn’t fix the issue so they basically wasted resources on developing a game mode that doesn’t work and still made it a selling point.
Exactly. Star Citizen has been in development so long that not only have other developers already had the chance to jump in ahead of them, the genre's brimming with games now!

They’ve made $600M. How is that fucking up a golden ticket? They’ve all been getting paid well for years. The people who spent money are the ones who don’t have a finished game. That probably doesn’t matter to the people who’ve paid off a large chunk of their mortgages in the meantime.
Sure, they've got money from all the good will they're soaking up, but at some point that good will and money will dry up...
If/when they finally do release a game, it's now got to not just compare to a whole full genre of games, it's got to be better than them in order to get that good will back.
Who cares about good will? If they release and people get pissed at the finished product then “shutter” the studio, take everyone to a “new” studio and work on another game with the experience and cash you got from SC
Since backing SC I’ve met my wife, got married and had three children. Two of which are already going to school. It’s crazy how much you can accomplish in 13 years. I wonder if the game will be done before my oldest turns 18.
The difference is that Dwarf Fortress only released on Steam because they had financial worries due to some health scares. They decided to release it on steam and charge for it but they wanted to deliver a major overhaul of the UI to justify selling it, even though people wanted to pay them for years.
DF has been in development for 20 years but it’s essentially a full game that they’ve been making better. Yeah it’s buggy (they simulate so goddamn much of course it’ll have bugs), but it’s at least a full experience that you can replay many times and never have the same experience.
Star Citizen does not deliver a full game, it’s just a glorified tech demo. It’s cool tech, but it’s not worth playing in my opinion.
Dwarf fortress was released and being distributed and successful before steam existed, the recent release was to attain more financial security as the devs age and have to deal with medical bills related to aging, failing bodies
I don’t have a minimum, and my maximum is negotiable. I’ve played <5 hour games that felt too long, and >50 hour games that felt too short.
I generally shoot for 20-30 hours, but that’s because it seems like a sweet spot where most games with tons of filler are longer. I actually have a category for short games, because sometimes the 2-3 hour experience is what I’m looking for.
Those were all around 5 hours or less, in rough order from shorter to longer (just pulled up my Steam games by playtime). I have a few more on my list that I haven’t played yet but are likely about that length if you want more. :)
Thanks for the list. I was recently playing Limbo because it’s on the PS Vita and I know Doki Doki Literature Club is as well so maybe I’ll play that next. I also heard good things about Oxenfree before so maybe I’ll pick that up at some point.
Good, tbh, I think we’ve had to back off Open World RPGs for years now. Smaller scale RPGs can tell a story with far more focus. I think something like Witcher 2 or Baldurs Gate 3 are good examples of balancing exploration and story telling.
Yeah I’ve loved open world games since I first played oblivion as a teenager but being open world isn’t necessarily a good thing in and of itself and being too big often makes you spoiled for choice. Plus I just don’t have time anymore to explore the whole world. For me as long as the story is interesting and it has good systems and mechanics along with new game plus of some kind I can get into a game and play it over and over
Seems like a no-brainer to have a custom campaign system given the number of people who’ve picked this one up. You think they’d want to capitalize on their success regardless of how tired they are
The important shit is getting done already. The community isn’t going to wait for a toolkit.
And the things that toolkit likely allow aren’t really what modders want to change, anyway. I don’t think anyone wants to add quests, but fixing broken things seems to be the goal of the current mods.
Modders aren’t single minded collectives. A modder who wants to make a quest mod will make a quest regardless of the inconveniences a QoL mod they could have made would have fixed.
When it comes to “classic” comedy, then Hi-Fi Rush is one of the highlights in recent times. Not only are there a lot of jokes in the dialogue that landed for me, all the cutscenes are also loaded with perfectly timed visual gags. Lots of humour hidden in the environment as well.
Other than that, any “serious” game that has a wonky physics engine can accidentally be pretty funny on accident. Slinging around corpses in Dark Souls 1 for example.
Wholly dependent on the game. Lots of Indies feel like decent, self contained games ranging from 3-8 hours of gameplay. Gris, Inside, Abzu, Thomas Was Alone, etc.
