Ubisoft claims to be making soulful games again [x] doubt

GrayBackgroundMusic, (edited ) w What games had easy soft locks that prevented you from either progressing or getting a true ending?

Xmen on Sega genesis. At one point you have to literally reset the console. I was 10 and didn’t understand that’s what it was telling me to do. No game had ever done that, and prof x was breaking the 4th wall telling the player to do that. The game never broke the 4th wall otherwise. I didn’t understand until a decade later when I read it on some listicle.

Yes! I spent entirely too much time in TF2 and Gmod.

mosiacmango,

Haha yup. I bought it for half life, but figured i would play the other games first. Portal was amazing, so I gave TF2 a shot next.

I didn’t play half life for like 2 years.

Probably because Black Flag is fucking revered and people would eat that shit up on the pedigree alone. It's an open world pirate game, which doesn't have much competition.

AC3 stands to gain more from a remake, but it would require some good faith from the community to buy into it, and it's not as unique of an overall experience from the initial premise compared to Black Flag which instantly forms a picture in your mind of a free booting high seas adventure with some light assassination.

    Delusional, (edited )

I’d kill for that game but more centered around pirating. Maybe have your own fleet with more ship customization and be able to take over and build a city on an island that becomes thriving over time and then have to defend from attacks by the British navy or something.

    Ranvier,

There seems to be a bug with the main star/sun not showing up in some amd cards. I don’t recall if Xbox has this glitch, but it does use an amd card as well so seems possible. Hopefully Bethesda or amd or whoever is responsible for the bug can fix it soon.

Sierra adventure games, like King’s Quest and Space Quest, were notorious for this kind of thing. Like there could be an item you have 1 chance to get, and you didn’t know, so you don’t get it and then several hours later when you’re at the end of the game, you realize you need that thing to solve the puzzle and actually move on. But you can’t. Because you didn’t get it when you had the chance and you can not go back.

    BeanGoblin,
    @BeanGoblin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I like the Unstable Ordinance from Space Quest IV that you can pick up near the start of the game. It’s entirely useless, you can’t ditch it, and if you have in your inventory near the end of the game, it blows up and kills you. Everytime. You have to restart nearly the whole game and resist the adventure game urge to grab everything that isn’t nailed down.

    ripcord,
    @ripcord@kbin.social avatar

I thought it blew up when you went into the sewers which isn't long after you pick it up. But still, it's a trap you don't realize is a problem right away and really sucked :)

    RaincoatsGeorge,

Those games didn’t give a fuck about your feelings. I remember some of those point and clicks had zero chill. I played one where all I wanted to do was cross the street. My character was immediately run over by a car and I had to start over. The typing games could be even worse. Oh sorry this bees nest is attacking you, here’s hoping you grabbed the bug spray under the carpet on the 3rd floor and are quick enough on your feet to type out the exact sequence of words necessary to get your character to use it. ‘Use bug spray’ sorry can you please be more specific. Oh never mind your character is dead, no saves, heres the worst 8 bit death audio anyone has ever created.

    Theharpyeagle, (edited )

Ah, fond memories of playing Hugo’s House of Horrors and having to frantically type while a dog bites your face off.

    RaincoatsGeorge,

That’s the exact game that came to mind. At least a few years ago there was a website where you could play all those games , I don’t know if it’s still up.

sadreality, w Steam players hate NBA 2K24 almost as much as they hate Overwatch 2

How are y'all buying this still jfc

    GreenMario,

    Who else makes NBA games?

    That’s why.

    sadreality,

Can't you just keep playing year old version? Like NBA22 or NBA21, skip a few years in between?

    turddle,

There’re definitely roster updates and other little stuff that gets added and tweaked in the new versions as much as people like to meme about “same game”. The old versions don’t update so that’s how they get new sales. Kinda bullshit but that’s what it is.

PC gets a special short straw though and is the last gen version of the game despite PC being on par or better than the new consoles. 2K knows where they make the money and do the least everywhere else. That part is definite bullshit.

    sadreality,

    certified toxic.

I think call of duty did that thing recently, where Modern Warfare 2019 got "deprecated" so peasants buy MW2. I am done with tit.

    turddle,

Yeah the lack of effort is just too brazen nowadays. Instead of making the new thing better they just make the old thing worse.

But as long as consoles keep selling, these companies won’t be stopping. Terrible

    keeb420,

Sports games are one of the few genre where it might make sense as a gaas approach. Make 1 game for the console generation and sell roster updates every year. Add in micro transactions for the dumb stuff and it seem to be a win win all around. The game gets cheaper meaning more people will likely buy it. No one has to complain it's the same game every year because it would be by design. And devs wouldn't have to crunch every year to get the game out.

    turddle,

Totally agree. Shoot, even when I was still buying them I’d wait til they dropped to like $20 mid-season. It’s more of a DLC at that point which makes more sense considering what we get

    iAmTheTot,
    @iAmTheTot@kbin.social avatar

Many people do. Yes, there are those that buy every year but I genuinely think they are the minority. You gotta think, even if only 1/3 of all the 2k NBA fans buy every three years, that's... still a lot of sales.

    weirdo_from_space,

Is that really the only important aspect? That it has the NBA or Madden or FIFA brand? Does the actual game not matter at all? Because if so, I think sports gamers made their decision and have no right to complain about it’s results.

    turddle,

It’s the definitive basketball game and objectively does the job when it comes to that. It has its quirks for sure but the popularity speaks for itself. And given the choice, people would rather play as Lebron James as opposed to some random generated Jebron Lames; they want the real thing as seen on TV.

Now, 2K being dicks about having last-gen on PC after so many years. That’s definitely something to complain about and the reviews are deserved.

    weirdo_from_space,

Wasn’t NBA 2K20’s trailer disliked to hell because it dedicated more time to show off the roulette wheel, pachinko and slots than basketball? That really doesn’t look like the definitive basketball game, dude. Multiplayer seems to work well enough but most of the complaints are over single player features, at least you can play a different game for that aspect.

    turddle,

I didn’t really encounter all that when I played and I stuck to the single player. But I don’t think that detracts from the core concept: 2K is THE basketball game when you ask most any fan or even NBA players. These guys are coming in for face scans and concerned for their in-game rating so yeah, popularity speaks for itself.

That said, the micro transaction stuff is terrible but it’s more of a thing that got slapped onto the game out of greed. I wouldn’t say it defines the game itself. Hence the complaints; mine included.

    GreenMario,

Blitz tried to make a football game without licensed players after Madden got the exclusive.

It flopped real fucking hard. Blitz The League, if you’re wondering.

Sports fans really want those actual rosters.

    weirdo_from_space,

Blitz the League came out at a different time, Madden was still a beloved series by this point. You have two sports games, both are good, but one of them has the NFL license and the other doesn’t. I wouldn’t fault anyone for looking at Madden as a no brainer in such a situation.

Times have clearly changed, how many times did Angry Joe made videos ripping the Madden of the year into pieces? If the game is really that bad, giving up on the roster seems like a good compromise if it means a good game. But according to Madden players roster comes first, so I don’t know what they are complaining about.

I get that a good sports game that has the players you know and support isn’t much to ask but it’s what it is.

    SatyrSack,

No one said you have to buy basketball games

    GreenMario,

Never met a sports ball fan? This shit isn’t negotiable. Having working multiplayer (last years always get shut down) and up to date accurate rosters is crucial.

EA/2K got these people by the balls because there is no competition due to exclusivity. It’s really fucked up and sad for sports ball fans.

    NightOwl,

I’m a nba fan though, and I just stopped playing basketball games because I got tired of paying for roster updates. And now monetization is even worse so genre is dead to me. So as a former fan of 2k I don’t understand having to play the games so badly that people keep paying for it every year.

That applies to any game or franchise. If it gets bad enough that I detest it I’d just move on from it even if no option pops up. Especially one so predatory on top of being an annual release.

M500, w What games had easy soft locks that prevented you from either progressing or getting a true ending?

In cave story, there is a decision around the middle of the game. If you make the wrong decision you can’t upgrade to the best weapon in the game.

I forget all the details, but i was annoyed when I found out about it.

    azulavoir,

there’s several decisions like this, it’s just the way the game is

Starglasses, w What games had easy soft locks that prevented you from either progressing or getting a true ending?

Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced had tons of missions that required items and gave items. Your inventory had a cap so once you reached it you needed to decide on which inventory items to dstroy to make space for new rewards, or leave the rewards behind.

There were so many repeating quests so those rewards were safe to destroy. But if you destroyed a required item from a one-time quest(i don’t think there was anything special to mark these one-time side-quests)… no 100% game for you.

    Starglasses,

You could also save your game mid-battle. I learned the hard way I shouldn’t have saved in a major story battle. Death in those were Game Over. There was only one save slot, so I was locked in a battle I had no chance of surviving.

    csolisr,

I went through that exact problem, didn’t have space to stuff a single item from a mission I thought would be repeatable and so I got stuck in 99% completion - the only solution was to trade it from another cart and that was not gonna happen

    Theharpyeagle,

I loved that game but there’s no way in hell I’d ever have the patience to 100% it, good lord.

bomanicious, w What games had easy soft locks that prevented you from either progressing or getting a true ending?

Ys 8 has a soft lock toward the end where if you didn’t do enough side quests to build up enough affinity with your castaway group and party members you would get treated to a bad/neutral ending. Fortunately at that soft lock point there are enough ways to build up those points so you can progress past that point.

GenBlob, w What games had easy soft locks that prevented you from either progressing or getting a true ending?

The Ooze. My memory on this is fuzzy but on genetics lab part 2, there is a room you can enter that has a checkpoint. If you enter the room then you’re locked inside and if you collect the checkpoint and die, you will respawn back into the room and your only option is to lose all your lives or reset the game. I remember getting really pissed off finding this when I was a kid because I spent days trying to beat the game and I had a really good run up until that moment.
