llii, w Sony Introduces PS5 Deep Earth Collection

Im pretty disappointed with the colors. They’re the same that we already had, only in metallic. There where such great PS4 controller designs and colors, but these don’t interest me one bit.

Sabata11792, w Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth gets a February 2024 release date on PS5
@Sabata11792@kbin.social avatar

Wait, the remake wasn't the full game?

ZekeSulastin,

FF7R was full game length but ended when the party left Midgar; in the original game that is a bit before the end of Disc 1.

Granted, the Midgar section was greatly expanded for the remake and it’s pretty clear that we’re not necessarily doing a 1:1 equivalence with the original game…

hydroel,

I think it will released into 3 parts: Remake, Rebirth and the third volume which I don’t think has been titled yet. What makes it even more confusing is that there was an “enhanced” version of FFVII Remake, released on PC and PS5, called Remake Intergrade.

ProfessorProteus, w Unity will quietly waive controversial fees if developers switch to its ad monetisation service - report
@ProfessorProteus@lemmy.world avatar

I loathe seeing ads in any medium whatsoever, especially a medium I use for escaping this ad-filled apocalypse of a world we all live in. Why on Earth would I willingly force ads onto people who have generously supported me doing the thing I love most?

Disclaimer: I haven’t made any games yet, but someday “soon”…

mindbleach,

GB Jam starts tomorrow, if you want to bang out some four-color faux retro title in a hurry.

echodot,

It’ll be interesting to see how many games are made in unity. I suspect quite a lot will be actually because developers haven’t had time to learn anything new yet it’s been about 5 minutes. No doing that may screw them over long term so maybe they won’t.

smeg,

But MONEY! Don’t you want to make loads of MONEY? Here, watch this Unity developer video about how to squeeze MONEY out of those generous chumps who supported you! It’s the Unity way!

TechieDamien,

When “soon” comes, take a look at Godot. You won’t be screwed by them because it is FLOSS. Have fun!

echodot,

Can Godot compare to unity in terms of features? I admit the last time I looked at it was probably over 2 years ago but it was very bare bones and could only do 2D graphics. Since the project I was developing at the time was a 3D game I kind of ignored it after that.

CorruptBuddha,

2 years ago godot absolutely had 3d game development. You just go to the top, and click from 2d, to 3d.

sugar_in_your_tea,

The 3D demos are impressive, and the most recent release added a lot of features for 3D development, such as a Vulkan renderer and a bunch of lighting effects.

I’m no 3D game dev, but from what I’ve seen, it’s ready for smallish 3D games. I don’t think the performance is anywhere near Unreal, but it seems to be capable enough for most indie 3D titles.

dandi8,

Godot 4 is, apparently, a big rewrite and doing 3D shouldn't be a problem now.

ProfessorProteus,
@ProfessorProteus@lemmy.world avatar

What the other folks said. To add, there are several games made with Godot that look like they match Unity in terms of graphical fidelity. And if you’re a boomer like me who doesn’t care about graphics, there are cool games like Ex Zodiac

TechieDamien,

Godot 4 drastically improved the capabilities of godot, especially in the 3d realm. It isn’t perfect, but I would say it is about on par with unity in terms of features. Note that some of the more advanced stuff are in modules that you need go download within the editor. This was done to keep the core light while not sacrificing features.

ProfessorProteus,
@ProfessorProteus@lemmy.world avatar

Last night I uninstalled Un*ty and replaced it with Godot, so I’m very excited to start learning. It’s a little disappointing that it’s not as “capable” as other engines, but my conscience (and future expectations) will be clear. And besides, to me game dev is about expressing oneself artistically and not chasing numbers and metrics.

TechieDamien,

If there is something you want to do and it isn’t simple and you think it should be, there is a good chance that there is a module that adds that functionality. Good luck!

ProfessorProteus,
@ProfessorProteus@lemmy.world avatar

That’s great to hear. No sense in reinventing the wheel, especially if the wheel uses quaternions for its 6-DoF rotation 😂

Thanks, and good luck to you as well!

dumdum666, w Lessons Learned From Cyberpunk 2077's Terrible Launch And Hands-On With Phantom Liberty

So those people had lofty and unrealistic expectations, huh? I can only speak for myself and I can say: the game was ok - not great - but ok. The interesting Story helped me with the fact, that the city itself was essentially „dead“. But back to the expectations: Many of the really disappointed gamers expected a Cyberpunk GTA - which CD Project obviously did not deliver. Maybe those gamers will get a better experience soon - who knows.

Until then Cyberpunk will remain a stain on CDPRs reputation sheet for a lot of people.

Minnels,

This. I expected that walls were breakable and more interesting gear/level system in a world full of life. I had fun with the game since I did a lot of the hacking stuff which is a bit different from anything I have played.

I will revisit the game with the new patch since I have got a new graphics card since then and not tried a single raytracing game since then. Also looking forward to the updated skilltrees. % stuff is really boring and lazy design.

iso, w Creators of Slay the Spire will migrate their next game to a new engine if Unity doesn't completely revert their changes

What happened?

oxideseven, (edited )

This.

Basically changed their pricing model to fleece Indy devs. Some devs would have owed more money than they ever even made on their games.

Rentlar, (edited )

Fleece every Unity dev pretty much, even if big studios can afford it.

simple,

TL;DR of the situation is that Unity released a statement 2 days ago saying they want successful developers to pay up to 20 cents every time a user installs a Unity game starting from Jan 1 2024, even if your game was already released. This caused a huge ruckus in the game dev community and many developers want to switch away from Unity.

falkerie71,
@falkerie71@sh.itjust.works avatar

Note that it’s “per install” (they clarified that reinstalling on the same device only counts as one install), not per unit sold. And Unity will also track pirated copies, so the devs would still have to pay the fee even if they didn’t sell it to you.

Wilker,
@Wilker@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

the tracking of pirated copies is even more fucked up. is that their way of imposing that “piracy = stealing”?

Cqrd, (edited )

It’s because they literally don’t know how to differentiate a download from legit and illegitimate. They’re going to track every time their bundler is downloaded and bill the developer for it, that would include pirated copies and legit copies alike.

Rentlar,

The swashbuckler’s solution is then to make your own bundler installer!

jayandp,

That’s assuming pirates would go through the trouble of removing said functionality. Pirates hate trackers, so they might do it, but not necessarily, as often the priority is just to get the game working.

can,

Because a cracker could remove the DRM but not whatever is tracking installs

breadsmasher,
@breadsmasher@lemmy.world avatar

Where did they add the same device reinstall clarification? Last I saw, same device reinstall is still a new install and thus chargeable

Zeth0s, (edited )

That’s a recent change. According to the faq on the official forum, initially the idea was to charge every reinstallation. Then they realized it was crazy. Now it’s every first installations:

If a user reinstalls/redownloads a game / changes their hardware, will that count as multiple installs? A: We are not going to charge a fee for reinstalls. The spirit of this program is and has always been to charge for the first install and we have no desire to charge for the same person doing ongoing installs. (Updated, Sep 13)

…unity.com/…/unity-plan-pricing-and-packaging-upd…

Note the “updated” yesterday. Initially every install in “different devices” counted. Even on the same device after reinstallation of the os

InEnduringGrowStrong,
@InEnduringGrowStrong@sh.itjust.works avatar

I fail to see how they can guarantee it’s the first install.
I game inside a VM with GPU passthrough and I’m pretty sure it would be trivial to install-bomb any game to rack up install numbers and costs.
Moreover, would anyone even trust any number of times Unity tells you your game was installed?
They could a magical 10% that would be hard to prove/disprove.
Anyone with a half-competent legal team would stay the fuck away from any of this nonsense going forward.

Zeth0s, (edited )

It’s a “proprietary system” (quote). It must be clearly always correct. It’s not one of those open source stuff… /s

betz24, (edited )

Retroactively charging developers, that’s stupid.

However, I’m not knowledgeable on any Game Industry economics, but isn’t $0.20 on a $20-$60 game negligible? I understand some people will have multiple devices so the developer could be out $1. On a $20 game that someone sells 1000 copies, that’s only $200 of $20,000 sales (maybe $800 in fees at the high end). I’ve used Unity before and it’s still a pretty solid game engine with easy to use tooling; using it would definitely save you time to build your game (time=money). Additionally, if I were to be building a game studio, everyone knows unity, so it would be easy to hire or find contractors who can help with pieces of the game. It makes sense from a business standpoint for me unless I’m missing something.

Is there a max fee? On the opposite side of the spectrum I could see DDOS-like attacks on game developers where an attacker can spin up a bunch of virtual machines and then keep installing the game to charge the developer $1mil dollars.

jayandp,

It’s the complete unpredictability that devs and businesses hate. 2% of every purchase they can plan for, but with install fees they could get randomly billed for copies that were already sold, and that is unacceptable. This isn’t a one time fee, whenever somebody installs the game on a new device, the dev gets charged. Not to mention the fact that some people might have multiple devices, but randomly in 3 years they could get a new PC and suddenly the dev gets charged again, all the while the dev didn’t make anymore money from that copy. Who the heck would agree to a system like that?

Not to mention that if a game gets added to a service like GamePass, then the service gets the bill. No way Microsoft would say yes to that, which means the Dev misses out on deals that could’ve made them a bunch of money.

McScience,

A competitor could literally buy one copy, make a script that spins up 1000 vms a minute and downloads your game over and over on “new devices” and put you out of business

Whirlybird, (edited ) w Immortals Of Aveum Dev Ascendant Studios Lays Off 45% Of Staff

Unfortunately with the length and cost of dev time these days, basically every studio is only one less than massively successful game away from mass layoffs and/or bankruptcy.

Not good for this studio, but the game was a mess from everything I saw.

sugar_in_your_tea,

It doesn’t need to be that way though. In this case, it looks like they shot for the moon and missed, when they probably should’ve started with a less aggressive title. Not every game has to be AAA, making a solid AA or indie game is totally fine too. If they did that, they could’ve released multiple games in that same time and budget and spread out the risk.
