cRazi_man, do games w Dave2D - Windows Was The Problem All Along (Lenovo Legion Go Windows 11 vs. SteamOS)

Hyped about the devices we’re going to see over the next year or so. Should be just in time to replace my first release Steam Deck as a noticeable upgrade.

thatKamGuy,

I know, right?!

I just hope that there’s enough movement in the market to not just push more developers to support Linux as a platform, but to disincentivise them from punishing players through lack of anti-cheat / incompatible DRM.

Also, low-key hyped for the (hopefully) eventual Steam Deck 2 once the market has re-aligned to a ‘new normal’ and Valve can once again push the envelope further!

cRazi_man,

I hope so too, but I don’t think a shift that big is coming any time soon.

Linux users are still a tiny proportion of the online player base. Steam Deck sales are negligible compared to Switch or console sales.

I hope it happens eventually, but I think it’s going to take much longer for AAA gaming corps to take Linux seriously.

thatKamGuy,

I know the whole “Year of Linux” is a worn-out meme by now; but things are a joke, until their not - best case in point would be AMD CPUs pre-Ryzen compared to now.

Steam Deck sales may not compare favourably to Switch / Console sales - it’s hard to say as Valve are privately owned and under no obligation to publish numbers. But all of a sudden, we can add a not insignificant portion of Windows handheld users to the mix (not 100%, but not 0% either).

Microsoft clearly sees this as an emerging risk, which is why they’re partnering to create an Xbox-branded handheld.

In terms of online representation - it’s also a case of chicken and egg. Online games don’t support Linux due to anti-cheat implementations, so online gamers don’t use Linux. Plenty of single-player offline experiences exist for us!

cRazi_man,

Agree with all that. “The year of Linux” will be built up to incrementally; and the fact that gaming is so good on Linux pushes that a long way.

The Steam Deck is what pushed me to change to full-time PC Linux myself. Having hardware with pre-installed Linux that works flawlessly has been great.

GreyEyedGhost,

I only got my deck last year, so it think I can hold off until the Deckard. Kind of okay paying 3 times as much for VR to not have it tied to Meta/Zuck.

Asetru,

Had my deck preordered and am still using it regularly. I’m really happy with it and just recommended the oled to a friend. Just out of curiosity: why would you want to upgrade it already?

cRazi_man,

Mine was a pre-release preorder as well.

I wouldn’t upgrade it now. Knowing me, I’ll probably end up waiting till 2027 and buy a secondhand device from 2026.

I mostly play indie 2D games, so games I want still work fine. The revised Deck has a bunch of improvements I would have liked (OLED, WiFi 6, etc). If there are enough improvements in usability (screen, WiFi, size, battery, hardware power), then I’ll upgrade and give the old device to my kids (who currently use it for more than 75% of the time anyway).

Stovetop, do games w Marathon | Reveal Cinematic Short

No matter how interesting a concept it may look, it’s still just a shitty live service game.

The concept is “yet another extraction shooter”, and half of the reveal trailer is AI slop…

Razzazzika,

I thought it seemed very surreal and AI ish

Azwing, do games w Mario Kart World - Announce Trailer [Nintendo Switch 2]

It’s worth it . The number of hours you can play a Mario kart game is nearly limitless. Not saying it shouldn’t or should be that much but the cost to value on those game are really high.

arakhis_,
@arakhis_@feddit.org avatar

What is it worth it - 600 doubloons for a kart game?

This is worth it if it came on the switch 1 too, theres no reason other than greed (literally evil greed, games are culture and a core for social integration in todays world). Mario Kart 8 was worth it 500 because it was times pre-covid and pre-2-class society. This might seem “radical” but its the bitter reality.

I want switch 2 to be successful, I loved the detail in the reveals - pacing, audio and logo design in these clips full of gameplay brought me to tears as a creative. Seeing artists still having the possibility to polish their crafts like that. I think my first paragraph has weighted in the balanced evaluation.

I just hope people will have good times with entertainment and either receive a product worthy their social features or at least include the switch 1 people, while they themselves deal with having no new gimmicks versions or reduced perfomance. Or at least hope people can find balanced entertainment with people who did not choose to buy themselves into products worth nintendo’s stock

Except Mario Kart has had its fair share of paid post release content lately. We can’t expect it to be the one-off purchase it once was.

Thorry84, do games w Dark Souls Remastered Seamless Co-Op Mod: Announcement

I’ve been having a lot of fun with DS3 Seamless Co-op since it released recently.

It’s so much fun to play these games with multiple people. And it was surprisingly stable. We’ve had a couple of crashes, but not worse at all. The only boss that was too bugged to play was Wolnir. Luckily it bugged out so hard it beat itself.

Can’t wait to play DS with 2 players as well

    ampersandrew,
    @ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

I tried Dark Souls 3 co-op without this mod years back, since it has that password system, but the game fights back against playing that way. It basically made sure you got invaded constantly.

    kajib,

Thanks for the heads up that this exists! Me and a friend were just about to play ds3 again, and seamless co-op would be a huge QoL improvement.

shortrounddev, do gaming w Linux is now FASTER than Windows!! Linux vs Windows - 2025 Gaming benchmarks
    @shortrounddev@lemmy.world avatar

I think a large reason why many game devs don’t dev on linux is tooling support, not the speed of the runtime. idk if Unity and Unreal editors run on Linux but they do make it simpler to target linux or mac. Ancedotally, however, most Unity devs I see are either on Windows or Macbooks, not Linux.

Personally I’m a fan of DirectX and all the tools that come with it. Vulkan is a comparable API (though more verbose than DX11) and the tooling support for it is very 3rd party. I could switch to Linux for literally anything other than game dev because I’m just too into DirectX right now

    lordnikon,

To answer your question yes both unity and unreal both support development on Linux like you said DirectX is the only odd man out for obvious reasons.

    exu,

Nowadays, you as a game dev have to actively block Linux through anticheat or do some extremely weird stuff for it not to work on Linux anyways.

    Valmond,

Godot is running fine on Linux (Mint, with c#)

    Just FYI.

Chickenstalker, do games w Coffeezilla does a third part of his CS:GO gambling expose...where he squarely puts the blame on Valve

Getting tired of these “shock” youtube channels drumming up drama for views. It’s only a matter of time before someone points the youtube cannon at these channels.

    winkerjadams,

How is investigating and calling out scammers and the like “drumming up drama”?

    TBi,

Because I disagree with it!! (/s)

    nomy,

I’m not even gonna lie up until a few months ago I was somehow under the impression that Valve and GabeN weren’t that evil. Learning about his 6th yacht and how they intentionally made loot crates as addictive as possible and target young people kind of put things in perspective. There’s still no such thing as an ethical billionaire.

    ronflex,

I see your point entirely and I understand why you feel that way. Just want to give you my friendly opinion on Coffee. I wouldn’t consider him a “shock” Youtuber, personally. He is an entertainer and a journalist, and pretty good at both IMO. He is definitely drumming up drama to a degree but I think this topic is especially worth the attention. I’ve watched the series this is a part of and can tell you that dude has done his homework. He included several interviews he did with different people that offers up a few pretty interesting perspectives. I recommend checking it out! At the end of the day, clickbait thumbnails and titles work well on YouTube and for some creators that otherwise might not drum it up it can be a matter of, “if you can’t beat em, join em”, but I definitely think the ends justify the means considering all of his work is what I and many others would call “fighting the good fight”.

    _cryptagion,

For fucks sake, Coffee is an investigative journalist, and he didn’t drum up shit. The problem has always been there, you idiots are just too busy sucking GabeN off that you can’t entertain the possibility that he isn’t the second coming of Christ.

BreadstickNinja, do games w The Witcher IV — Cinematic Reveal Trailer | The Game Awards 2024

I sure hope CDPR is up to the task. Witcher 3 is one of the greatest games ever made, but I’ve been burned by Blizzard into knowing that a great trailer doesn’t portend a great game.

    _cryptagion,

I need to actually start on 3. I’ve had it for several years, just never got around to playing it.

    BreadstickNinja,

I booted it up recently, and it holds up really well. It hits a perfect balance of narrative and action while largely avoiding repetitive fetch quests and the like. And both of the DLC are excellent - Hearts of Stone has the best plot line in the game while Blood and Wine has the most beautiful locations.

    _cryptagion,

I’ve actually got both of those. Not sure when I bought them, but they’re on my account.

    Blackmist,

They came with the GOTY edition which was pretty much the standard version being sold after a while.

HoS is my favourite of them even though it adds some truly tedious enemies to the map, but BaW is huge and adds like another 50% to the base game.

I played the second late and then the third. I think it simplified too much some parts of the gameplay to please the mass, but the atmosphere and writing are still really good.

Deceptichum, do games w Helldivers 2 - Omens of Tyranny Update Trailer

Sony fucked this game over so hard.

It was everywhere until they demanded the PS account linking and now no one talks about it since.

    gaael,

    Is it still geoblocked ?

    poleslav,

Yeah, I was very heavily into the game, playing for at least a bit every day, once the whole fiasco started I immediately stopped playing it. Some of my buddies mentioned they got rid of the requirement after that and that I should play again but honestly I don’t have any desire to touch the game after that rug pull.

    WolfLink,

It’s not just PlayStation, the game is fun but repetitive enough it gets old kinda quickly.

    Murvel,

I don’t have a PS account, and I play just fine. What are you talking about?

    Deceptichum,

    arstechnica.com/…/sony-will-soon-demand-helldiver…

Because they went back. But they added it on months after release. People outside of regions that PlayStation is in could not make accounts and straight up lost access to the game. Huge controversy and outrage. So eventually they undid it, but it was too late the damage to the game was done.

    Murvel,

No, because you never had to make a PS account, that’s what I’m telling you. It was never implemented.

There are many reasons a game might shrink in player numbers after release, but this ain’t it, chief.
