That building system looks pretty excellent.

September 23! I’m excited. I played the demo during next fest and the only thing I wish it had was more build space. They only gave a tiny little circle to build in.

This is why we need copyright expirations. Disney would most likely have sued with a cease and desist to remove it.

Does it use the likeness of old Disney properties? Yes… but it doesn’t hurt their image. Doesn’t take any profit away from them.

It’s also not a cash grab like those crappy Winnie the Pooh slasher movies. This pays homage to the art style of the time.

The only thing they could have done differently was use something different than a mouse… like what Cuphead did. Studio MDHR came up with unique characters and it paid off for them by getting their own animated series and merchandising. I don’t think Mouse P.I. for Hire will get the same type of deals, but time will tell.

Are you seriously measuring the success of a game by whether or not it gets adapted into a show?

MeekerThanBeaker,

No. I am not.

Banichan,
@Banichan@dormi.zone avatar

Saying it doesn’t make it true. You’d have better results if you went back and edited your comment 😂

MeekerThanBeaker,

No.

Zahille7,

Disney does not, nor did it ever, own the copyright to an entire state of animation. To my knowledge, it can’t even be done. It’d be like trying to copyright a particular painting technique.

I doubt Disney would give a shit about this game unless it was explicitly using Disney ripoffs or actual Disney IP. Which it isn’t.

Love day9

ytsedude, do games w It Took Me 6 Hours to Learn Anything in Stormgate - Day9TV (Professional Review)

God I love Day9. I don’t have as much time to watch him like I used to (before wife and kids), but I’m glad he posts streams to YouTube.

This is off-topic, but the video of revisiting his Amnesia playthrough made my freaking year.

I agree with your post, though. 99% of the time, Day9 has an amazing grasp of how to communicate ideas and mechanics clearly. It’s that 1% that just kills me! 😂

fluxion,

Had totally forgotten all my StarCraft days, but Day9 has a some really classic vids from back then glad he’s still doing his thing

milkisklim,

He has a Masters degree in communication. I remember him talking about taking classes for it way back in the day.

ytsedude,

Oh, really? That makes total sense! Was Math his bachelor’s degree?

regul, do gaming w It Took Me 6 Hours to Learn Anything in Stormgate - Day9TV (Professional Review)

Day9 did consult on the design of an RTS like ten years ago and it didn’t amount to anything.

Cataphract,

Without knowing any details I can only speculate but 10 years is a lot of time to refine your experience and expertise in a field. Do you remember what game it was and why it didn’t amount to anything?

regul,

I had to look it up. It was called Guardian of Atlas and Sean left the company right after the beta launched and then the game got cancelled. My guess as to why it went poorly is just that it was inexperienced devs making a game at a time when SC2 was still actually relatively popular. There was no space in the already tiny genre of RTS.

Now that Blizzard has essentially abandoned StarCraft, it might be possible for some folks to carve some of that tiny market away.

Cataphract, (edited )

Holy crap that game development sounds like it had a really tough time and brought upon by the inexperience like you said. Found some conversations with the co-founder after the game was cancelled

the game did not retain enough players to have any hope of becoming a business and it wasn’t a question of marketing - any money we spent on marketing would have been wasted…

it was not growing organically in alpha people would come in, and play for a bit, and then quit … i’m not even saying we needed high growth like, remember when the alpha launched we had something like 500-1000 people online the first several days … but 4 weeks later we were nowhere near 500-1000 the kind of business we bet the company on requires a game like, say, tf2, where its what, 9 years old or something and there’s still hundreds of thousands of players and it probably hasn’t had a single dollar of marketing spend

Absolutely crazy and absurd level of expectations lol. I imagine there wasn’t a single PR or marketing person in the company that could explain to them why. Seems like a lot of hubris which stopped them from finishing the development process and wanted immediate success and fandom.

edit: words hard

I didn’t know this channel but it is to slow. What he says may be interesting but there is no need to explain it 6-7 times (even more maybe). I watched 30 minutes something that could have been said and showed in 5. I can’t watch the full video.

Cataphract,

I totally understand and why I presented it as a company meeting lol. I unfortunately have been in one where things are explained over and over because the individuals on a team just aren’t grasping the concept and keep giving push-back. I also listened to it while laying down to sleep so it was a great lullaby.

dubyakay,

It’s Sean Plott

Cataphract,

You guys are blowing my mind. I had always heard of Day9 back in the day (all into the rts sceme) but didn’t really follow him and probably partially why it was great to run into that video.

I did not know he was tasteless’s brother (seem him broadcasting before) and his mother works with FG and he’s younger than me (kinda really shocking on that one, his picture from just 10 years ago makes me think covid hit him hard lol).

How is it not a problem that this looks so much like StarCraft?

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

Because it’s got bigger problems, like being free to play, always online, and not long for this world at the rate it’s going.

Cataphract,

is it weird that I don’t think it really looks like Starcraft (would probably be an improvement if it did though)? I’ve been looking at a lot of newer or undeveloped games like someone posted in one of the cross posts and all the games just have this moba-mobile look that seems like everyone is stuck on.

It’s like AI generated images, they all have this same look and feel to them no matter what it is but you can’t quite explain the fakeness to it. I can’t even really look at older games art styles comparing to the newer without getting confused with what’s happening or how it could be corrected.

I’m still salty about how they fucked up Thief 4.

sunbunman,

I was so hyped for it too. I’m a newer stealth game enjoyer (Styx, dishonoured 1 & 2 no kill undetected runs), the original thief trilogy feels really outdated to me and was so hyped for thief 4. So damned disappointing.

Coelacanth, do gaming w Stealth in Video Games | NakeyJakey

Great video. I hope more stealth games learn from Freelancer and create gameplay where making small mistakes don’t induce complete fail states. I like stealth games for the moment-to-moment gameplay and for the puzzle of figuring out how to navigate a level unseen for that 100% rating, but I also hate stealth games for the constant reloading.

Ever since playing Disco Elysium I’ve started thinking more and more about the fail-forward design philosophy and the general desirability of making failure interesting instead of inciting save scumming. It’s a problem in a lot of games, but none more than stealth games, I think.
