  • tempest,

    I go there to buy Nintendo games because I don’t trust Nintendo not to do weird crap with their digital goods.

    Dudewitbow,

    basically nintendo and sony are dubious with digital,. since they dont host their own CDN, so the store is more prone to being shut down earlier than virtually all other competitors.

    samus12345,
    @samus12345@lemmy.world avatar

    I’m old and buy physical whenever possible so I can trade them in when I’m done. It will suck when console online stores have the monopoly - I might have to go PC Master Race when that happens (complete with eyepatch).

    Cethin,

    As someone who’s been PC only for some time over a decade, I love digital. Having to store disks and search for them when I wanted them sucked. It’s a shame used isn’t an option, but that was never a great value to consumers anyway. It saved some money, but it was mostly sucked up as profit by whoever was reselling them.

    I don’t even have a disk drive on my computer. I have several fairly large drives so I can keep a good number of games installed at a time, and load times are faster than from a disk too. I couldn’t imagine going back. There is the risk of losing it all when a storefront goes down, but that’s already the case with modern physical games which have always online components or DRM locked to a network.

    samus12345, do games w The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Won't Include the DLC

    This isn’t even industry standard - charging $10 to “upgrade” a game, yes, but as far as I can remember the DLC is always included with the game at the base game price when it’s been out for a while.

    I hope Nintendo’s extreme arrogance and greed bites them in the ass. Will probably have to wait a year or so after launch to know since I’m sure it will take that long to get Switch 2s to all the diehards with money to burn. I’ll be interested to see how it sells to everyone else.

    But_my_mom_says_im_cool,

    Every single game dev out there charges for season pass and dlc? Every single one

    ampersandrew,
    @ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

    Yes, they charged for it years ago on the last gen system. This type of rerelease usually includes the DLC in the package so that they can go back to charging full price for a game that’s no longer in the zeitgeist and not worth as much as a brand new game.

    caseofthematts,

    Bad timing on this comment, with Larian releasing 8 new subclasses for Baldurs Gate 3 for free in a few days.

    samus12345,

    Yes, when the game is new. Then, when it’s been out a while, the standard practice is to bundle the DLC together with the base game at a lower price.

    I feel like they’re trolling us at this point. There’s no way they’re this stupid.

    weststadtgesicht,

    How is this stupid? Call it greedy or anti-consumer, but in the end it will increase Nintendo’s profits so it’s far from stupid from the company’s perspective. People buy consoles no matter how bad they are treated. Maybe you should call consumers stupid instead?

    JakobFel,
    @JakobFel@retrolemmy.com avatar

    The problem is that a company can only push their greed so far before they start losing people. Up until now, most of the Nintendo hate came from their anti-emulation crusade. Now, it seems like everyone and their brother is talking about just how absurd the entirety of this launch is.

    omarfw,

    On places like reddit, Lenny, etc where there is a vocal minority complaining about this. The vast majority of consumers don’t come on here nor do they keep themselves informed. They’ll grumble at the price a bit, then buy it anyway.

    Why are you excited at the prospect of less competition in the gaming space?

    You don’t have to like Microsoft at all, don’t buy their stuff, but they’re still a major competitor to Sony, Nintendo and Valve - and losing them would do more harm than good. Losing any of them would.

    Edit: seems a lot of folks miss the point, I’m not defending Microsoft’s practices, I’m saying having more competition is better.

    Sony and Nintendo are not angels either. Even valve has it’s bad points. You can by all means pick a side but less competition is always worse.

    slimerancher,
    @slimerancher@lemmy.world avatar

    This only effects playing on Windows, which in turn only hurts Windows, which is pretty much a monopoly, so not much of an issue there.

    Personally I don’t care too much about Windows, just happy that Linux is finally getting some foothold. Nothing wrong with having both Window and SteamOS/Linux gaming systems.

    nieceandtows,

    You should have asked this question to Microsoft before proton when they actively tried to kill Linux in so many different ways. If they had succeeded, then there would be absolutely zero competitors to them on PC handheld arena. Even now in their royally fucked status, they command over 80% market share in PC gaming (conservative estimate), so don’t worry they’re not going anywhere so soon.

    ViscloReader,

    Microsoft ain’t no competitor, they don’t play fair at all. Not like the others do. But they don’t even make good games. They just buy random stuff and hope windows stays the only platform where gamers go. Which should change with steam. Microsoft won’t die, I don’t think so, but they’ll have to work a bit more than what they did the last decade.

    Viri4thus,

    Microsoft inventions that made the gaming space a better competitive environment:

    Always online single player: GFWL

    Pay to play online: Ace

    Pay to play console online up till last year: MW

    Pay to play F2P console online: for over a decade

    And that’s just from the top of my head. The closest thing in the known universe to the behaviour of Microsoft is a tumour. It sends metastases to other organisations and then it assimilates and deletes any identity the original organisation had.

    Microsoft needs to be broken from Xbox, it already has a monopoly on the gaming sphere by controlling the OS of the majority, now it wants to metastasise to other platforms to begin assimilation. The future of core gaming is bleak.

    ampersandrew,
    @ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

    Legitimately though, along with Games For Windows Live was the Games For Windows initiative, which did standardize controller support on PC. It standardized it in a way that benefited themselves, but it was an important step toward arriving where we are today, where there’s no longer some weird distinction between “PC games” and “console games”.

    ampersandrew,
    @ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

    The old model is fucked, but it’s fucked for Sony too, just on a longer time frame. This is them pivoting.

    i_am_not_a_robot, do gaming w How Hidden Nazi Symbols Were the Tip of a Toxic Iceberg at Life Is Strange Developer Deck Nine

    Are people in this article really suggesting that the 100% emoji is racist? You can never get a perfect score or agree with anything again because a small number of people have used that number to mean something else and now somebody will interpret it as a hate crime.

    At first they were arguing that somebody writing “shit” in an exaggerated way, and the occurrence of two other numbers and an elongated asterisk were Nazi symbols, and they could be, but the only evidence is that somebody said they thought it was too many coincidences. I don’t know enough about the circumstances to say it is or isn’t intended that way. Management apparently thinks it isn’t. But saying multiple people reacting “100%” to a message they agree with means they’re all using the number 100 as a sign of white supremacist solidarity is ridiculous. What else are they going to do? React with the “OK” hand? No, the ADL also decided that one is racist. React with thumbs up? No, younger people have decided that one is rude.

    chloyster,

    I took the “100” part to be that someone was mocking the people who were happy the Nazi/racist symbolism was being addressed by management.

    Obviously we only have the article to go off of, but the symbols/ numbers mentioned are definitely Nazi symbols, so if there were a bunch of those symbols (all on one single room I might add) that absolutely seems suspect

    jarfil,

    if there were a bunch of those symbols (all on one single room I might add) that absolutely seems suspect

    Technically, I could understand that… IF the in-game character living in that room, were supposed to be a Nazi sympathizer. Otherwise, it’s a clear dog whistle.

    Otherwise, rules have changed, and that symbology would no longer get the game insta-banned in Germany… as long as it was only used “in an artistic way”:

    Germany lifts total ban on Nazi symbols in video games (10 August 2018)

    Juno,

    As someone who has played through that game 3.5 times (I’m in the middle of another playthrough right now) I can say with high degree of confidence that I have never noticed any nazi memes 😳

    I’ll look for them specifically??? But I’m already pretty aware of that sort of thing because I’m in a group that nazis hate. I think I would have noticed and quiet literally would have been like “what the hell is this shit?” OR I would have attributed that kind of writing too an actual perhaps racist character in the town, but I haven’t felt that way either. I just don’t know what they’re talking about, again as somebody who’s played the game three times.

    Vodulas,

    I may be wrong, but I believe it is in an upcoming game, not True Colors

    Juno,

    Hmm 😒 well if that’s so, it’s possible. But yeah, not in True Colors. I feel like I would have noticed. I will keep a watchful eye as I finish this next playthrough

    Vodulas,

    Thought I read that, so I double checked. It is mentioned in the first paragraph that it is the next entry in the series, not an existing title.

    Bitrot,
    @Bitrot@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

    That’s an awful lot to say over “one person suggested” which it seems most people including the authors took to mean agreement.

    jarfil, (edited )

    No they aren’t, as @chloyster explained.

    But I wanted to point a tangent, from the article you linked:

    outstretched middle, ring, and pinky fingers to represent a Roman numeral “3.”

    Coincidentally, the Romans would count like 👍👉👌… instead of “thumb, index, middle” for the numeral “3”, because that resembled the letters “IV”, which were the first two letters of “IVPITER”, or “Jupiter”, formerly known as “Zeus”, the God of Gods, and making the “IV” sign in vain was considered a blasphemy… similar to how Jewish people wouldn’t “use the name of God in vain”, which lead to the expression “hallelujah” from “hallelu-Yah***”, meaning “praise Yah***”… in order to also not say the whole name of God. Curiously, Muslim people have no problem with saying “Allah” or writing “ﷲ”, just with depictions of their prophet, go figure.

    These sign shenanigans have been going on for thousands of years, only difference is now a “meme” with 10 comments on 4chan, can become a hate sign used by thousands or millions in less than a decade.

    PS: another curious one, is the ✋ “Hi!” vs. the Greek 🖐 “I smear 💩 on your face”… best not to confuse them 😉 (“oops, got something in my eye” /s)

    Vodulas,

    The other numbers and Hagel rune are very explicit white supremacist symbols, so trying to downplay them is suspect. As Chloyster pointed out, it seemed like the person saying that the 100% is racist was trying to mock people saying bringing up the other symbols. Even the ADL says you need to look at the context for the 100%. Bringing up the OK is also suspect, since, again, even the ADL says the context matters.

    Also, nobody is saying they are hate crimes, but hate symbols which you should absolutely be aware of and not include in your game, even if by accident.

    Megaman_EXE,

    The 100% emoji is the only thing I thought was weird. I can understand why they might think that way given that the developers went through weeks dealing with what seemed like internal sabotage. Given the context, it makes sense, but it might also be an overreaction.

    I use the 100% emoji to show agreement sometimes. I certainly hope people don’t think I’m trying to use it as a dog whistle. Kinda sucks because we’re running out of agreement emojis at this point lol.

    Zagorath,
    @Zagorath@aussie.zone avatar

    Not sure the ADL is really a reputable organisation worth looking to as and authority on what is and is not hate. They’re an explicitly zionist organisation with a history of defending genocide.

    That said, this particular article seems completely fair. They don’t say the ok gesture is a symbol of hate, only that it is sometimes used that way. Which is accurate.

    But also:

    Since the early 1800s, the gesture increasingly became associated with the word “okay” and its abbreviation “ok.”

    Whoops guys, got that one wrong. OK is the , and okay is a lengthened form of that.

    Vodulas,

    Yeah, ADL used to be my go to for looking up hate symbols, but then I learned about the zionism. That being said, AFAIK, the info in their hate symbol database is pretty accurate. Something about a stopped clock…

    I did find this database recently and it seems to be pretty good too, though not as well laid out:

    I mean, no. There is a huge history of slavery in Europe. Who do you think was involved in the Atlantic slave trade?

    And it is not about sensitivity. It is a hateful word to use. You clearly knew there was an issue using it based on context, but you decided to do it anyhow. We could have got the same context by just saying, " you won’t name your dog a racial slur ike your grandpa did etc."

    In the future, just don’t use it

    i_am_not_a_robot,

    ADL make a list that explains what obscure symbols a very small number of people use, possibly ironically, and promote it via their website to turn it into a more powerful hate symbol.

    The Roman salute used by Italy and Germany and the Bellamy salute used by Americans were similar but not exactly the same. Americans possibly created the Nazi salute’s use as a hate symbol by changing their own salute to be different and then showing people using either of the original salutes as Nazis in propaganda.

    Joker,

    I don’t know if that’s a fair criticism. I think I first saw something about this thing yesterday. Not much of a marketing push. I had to look it up to see what the heck it is. It seems to have a very specific and narrow use case. I’m sure it’s a nice option for people with that need and works well enough, but it’s not exactly something the masses are clamoring for. There’s similar tech out there and they are sort of niche products. I don’t expect this thing to be selling like hotcakes.

    Naw their criticisms are extremely fair.

    When this thing was first announced it was met with mostly people all over going “what’s the point of this thing, nobody is going to buy such a useless thing when they can just play on their phone or some adapter” etc.

    Then when the pre-orders where announced to be selling out, it didn’t shift to “people want this thing”, they just pivoted to “they are just lying to hype it up”

    And now that it’s sold out everywhere, they have no choice but to either admit it was wanted and they were wrong, or just keep going with the idea that, no, it’s everyone else that is wrong.

    I completely understand. I’ve got a gaming rig in one room, stream to mini PCs set up as steam consoles in other rooms, and have a Steam Deck. I can play anywhere in my house. I never need to worry whether someone else is using a TV.

    If it works for your case, I’m happy for you!

    TyrionsNose,

    Yup, and that’s the exact use case for the Portal.

    GiuseppeAndTheYeti, (edited )

    Others have said it already, but it’s the best way to describe it. It’s literally just a screen with a controller attached. You can only use it for remote play on a PlayStation console at home. It doesn’t offer cloud gaming and it doesn’t allow you to even connect to WiFi networks that require you to sign on in a browser before gaining access to the Internet because the thing doesn’t even have a browser included in the software. The only common use case I could see for this thing is if you’re going to a friend’s house as a teen and want to play online games while in person.

    Even then, as a parent I would much rather just spend the extra money on a steamdeck or other handheld that has compute and actual software. This is a ripe $200 turd that hardcore PlayStation fans and overzealous scalpers are buying.

    phillaholic,

    It’s $199, the same price as the Premium DualSense Edge controller.

    Zahille7,

    That’s kind of ridiculous for a controller. Unless the entire casing is metal or something, that doesn’t seem worth it imo.

    echo64,

    The use case is that you live with other people and other people want to use the TV that the ps5 is connected to, and you want to play ps5, and you aren’t a jerk who hogs the TV all the time.

    It’s okay, demonstrably people want this, even if you’re mad about it.

    GiuseppeAndTheYeti,

Now it does feel like there is missing content in the final act, and seems like they probably rushed it out at the end, but I spent 100 enjoyable hours getting there so I can’t complain too much.

    Did they ever apologise properly for what they did to that player that said free Hong Kong and allow him to play again or have we all just forgotten that?

    who, (edited )

    For the uninformed:

    That was when Blitzchung, in his post-tournament win interview, uttered a brief sentence in support of Hong Kong (and implicitly in support of human rights). Blizzard responded by revoking his prize money, banning him from tournaments, and terminating the interviewers who happened to be on camera with him at the time.

    This action took place late at night (well outside of US business hours) and was accompanied by a letter that some analysts pointed out had peculiar phrasing patterns that one might expect from native-Chinese speakers writing in English. The excuse given was a tournament rule prohibiting any act that “brings you into public disrepute, offends a portion or group of the public, or otherwise damages Blizzard image.”

    To answer your question: No.

    At the subsequent BlizzCon, Blizzard president Allen Brack gave a speech in which he “apologized” for the vague act of failing to live up to the high standards they set for themselves. He didn’t mention Blitzchung at all. This was a typical, predictable, corporate non-apology, allowing them to say “I’m sorry” for something other than the harm they inflicted or the position they took. Neither Brack nor Blizzard apologized for the actions taken against Blitzchung and the interview hosts. The punishments were not reversed. (I think Blizzard eventually responded to massive public pressure by somewhat reducing the duration of Blitzchung’s ban, but never lifted it entirely, awarded his prize money, or restored the interview hosts’ contracts.)

    A few years later, Activision Blizzard was bought by Microsoft. Bobby Kotick, the CEO at the time of the Blitzchung decision, is no longer there. We don’t know who else participated, so we don’t know if they are are still making decisions at Blizzard.

    I’m not going to buy one cause the pricepoint and the fact that “physical copies” of games are going to be empty cases with keys, which might be able to be lent or resold until Nintendo decides against it or kills the system for verifying them, but they did make a number of improvements that would have opened up my wallet once again if they hadn’t let greed win the day.

    Screen size, resolution, the APU, storage size, controller connector, buttons, the lot. They did state that they worked on the stick drift issue and found ways to mitigate it, but they weren’t specific unfortunately.

    Can’t wait for them to remaster skyrim again before TES6

    DireTech,

    You joke, but I’d totally be down with an update that integrates better graphics technology and reduces modding issues. Ive played through it half a dozen times in VR and 2d and there’s still plenty of content I haven’t done. Only issue I have these days is the small pool of voice actors so every 5th person has the same voice.
