BedbugCutlefish, (edited ) do games w Inkbound is removing in-game monetization in the next update
@BedbugCutlefish@lemmy.world avatar

Good. This is a game I played and immediately refunded when I saw all the monetization stuff.

I just want a single player TBS, in the style of their other game, Monster Train. But I got immediately turned off by the FTP MMO type design choices in Inkbound.

raydenuni, (edited )

Did you play it? I’m not really sure how their monetization worked exactly as it never intruded on my experience. Still, it’s nice they’re dropping it. Early access is doing wonders for the game same as it did for Monster Train I hear, although I didn’t play that until release. They added offline play a while ago, completely redesigned movement to be simpler and more satisfying, and have been adding classes and taking things. The game is excellent, even more so in co-op in my opinion but my friend swears by 1p.

I got through the tutorial, and into the ‘hub world’ or w/e it’s called, and it just felt very ‘MMO’ to me. Which, on top of the monetization already putting a bad taste in my mouth, I just refunded there. I hate games that shove ‘multiplayer stuff’ into single player games. Like, I played through Elden Ring in forced offline: I don’t want to interact with others, even through little stuff like bloodstains.

raydenuni,

They’ve made a number of strange decisions I think. The game has a lot more story with voice acting than Monster Train. But then it’s also co-op and has this lobby room you hang out in with random people and it doesn’t matter in any way that I can’t tell. The game itself is amazing though and none of the other stuff detracts from it in my opinion. If you’re at all still interested, you could watch a let’s play. I know there are some co-op sessions recorded.

Minnels,

You can enjoy it 100% solo. The only place you see others that you never have to interact with is the hub. There is nothing in the game that force you to do anything with others or even suggest that it is multiplayer except some skills that mention allies (but works on yourself too). If that is too much I don’t think the game is for you anyway.

Really loved Cultic. I wish they expanded on the survival mode and made it more in-depth, I really loved it.

Really loved Cultic.

A bit of a shame it was ignored by pretty much all GOTY discussions. It would have deserved to be at least in consideration but at least the outlets follow were not even aware of the game.

I wish they expanded on the survival mode

Well, it’s just one guy who does everything…

My recommendations are Dodonpachi Resurrection, Mushihimesama, and Deathsmiles. They’re all on sale, they’re all made by CAVE. One more CAVE game, Akai Katana, is also listed but it’s not on sale. They are all extremely difficult if you have never played the style of game before (Japanese arcade bullet hell / scrolling shooter). Heavy emphasis on learning bullet patterns and doing precise dodges. It feels so good when you manage to dodge a pattern, or time a screen cancel/hyper just right.

If you only try one, Mushihimesama is 6 dollars right now, has an awesome soundtrack and a cool fantasy forest and insect theme. It’s relatively beginner friendly but you will definitely notice a sharp difficulty spike going from stage 3-4-5. I got to play it on an actual cabinet at PAX west, definitely my highlight of that weekend.

Any recommendations? Not too well versed in the genre… I did see synthetik on there, which was dope as hell. That’s a great game.

CouldntCareBear, (edited )

Enter the Gungeon is a steal at that price. And so is West of Dead.

Abrslam,

Synthetik isn’t actually a Shmup, if you’re looking for games like it you want to look into twinstick shooters. A Shmup is an automatically scrolling shooter with where you are traveling in a single primary direction. A true Shmup gives you freedom to move all around the screen but the screen scrolls through the level at a fixed rate. Famous shmups include Gradius, R-Type, Raiden. There are a few different subgenres but the main offshoot you’ll see is Bullet Hell.

A great place to start is the Touhou games, and fan games (My favourite is Blue Devil in the Belveder). My all time favourite Shmup is Teslapunk, but it’s pretty obscure and not exactly popular.

If you want to learn more look up Shmup Junkie on YouTube and join his discord. Lots of great guys and a curated list of beginner games/goals for someone who’s interested in the genre. Trust me there is a Shmup for every taste out there. Try lots to see what clicks for you!

kae, do games w Steam SHMUP Fest, now through October 2nd

I had no idea what SHMUP is… so if you’re like me they are SHoot eM Up games. Either bullet hell or isometric shooters.

Abrslam,

There’s a lot more to the genre, and the isometric shooters you’re talking about are technically not shmups, rather they’re twin stick shooters. A true Shmup is the bullet hells you mentioned, but bler hell is actually a subgenre, there are many types of shmups that control the same way a bullet hell does, but minus the hell of bullets. Check out Shmup Junkie on YouTube and join his discord to learn more than you ever imagined about this amazing genre!

As a transgender person and as just a citizen of the world in general, I hate the "politicizing" of things. The validity of my personhood and whether I deserve basic human rights isn't political. And yet, transgender rights are questioned and removed in the regions where "politicizing" factions have roots, and "transgender porn" is searched far more there too. Hypocrisy in action, but their entire philosophy is about burying their heads in the sand, so of course their own hypocrisy evades their notice.

Neither is Planned Parenthood's mission to give people options for family planning political. Anyone who disagrees with Planned Parenthood can choose not to use their services, but as has been proven time and time again, the places where Planned Parenthood is needed most of all is in the places which try to ban it so vehemently. They don't care about the women who die in back-alley abortions, and they don't care that proper sex education can actually prevent abortions because talking about sex makes them squeamish. They yell and scream "murderer" to the doctors who are actively trying to help them and save their lives because they can't see past the indoctrination.

The people rabid to "politicize" things they disagree with are the biggest of hypocrites and I'm so tired of seeing companies capitulating to these blinded idiots over "political issues" that have no business being labelled "political". I'm a person, I deserve the same human rights as anyone else, and women deserve the right to choose what happens to their bodies. It's obvious and self evident to anyone who isn't burying their head in the sand, or still trying to dictate the lives of others based on ancient fairy tales.

The whole concept of "charity" is political.... all charities are "political groups", no charity would be valid based on that judgement.

When you look at who the Unity board of Directors is friends with (Musk), this makes a lot more sense.

The EU is about to take their pound of flesh for this.

I dislike the GD/Titan Quest style of character builds (a lot of awkward “meta” mechanics and you more or less are the same character from level ten to endgame) but GD is very much a game I go back to every few months. So pretty much a no brainer to buy this expansion. Just something about the encounter balance and meatiness of attacks keeps me happy

Which is a shame that everything feels so “whiff” in the Titan Quest remaster.

Every time I think the game has nothing new to show me they release a major patch, an expansion or add proper gamepad support so I can play it on Steam Deck as well and now this. So I usually jump in and realize how freaking good this game is. Its either installed on my desktop PC or SD or both for the past few years.

Its a no brainer and probably a day 1 purchase as the devs deserve every cent! I think another playthrough is in order soon.

It'll be super interesting to see how shapeshifting fits into the dual class setup.
