Agent_Karyo, do games w Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen’s early access launch weekend saw over 2300 concurrent Steam players
@Agent_Karyo@lemmy.world avatar

Anyone tried this? I generally dislike MMOs, but I am trying to find something that fits my tastes.

I tried GW2 and while it is a great product, the themepark approach just doesn’t fit with my expectations of an MMO.

I played Darkfall back in the day, I did enjoy Darkfall, the world felt real.

youronlyone,
@youronlyone@c.im avatar

@Agent_Karyo I haven't tried (can't currently).

But re: your (other) topic, I think you're looking for a sandbox MMO or semi-sandbox. Sadly, sandbox MMOs are rare these days (even semi-sandbox). The most we have are in the 1st Gen and 3rd Gen MMOs. Or, MUDs/MUSHes. (AoC looks promising though.)

Agent_Karyo,
@Agent_Karyo@lemmy.world avatar

AoC does look promising. But I am not paying $100+ to do alpha testing.

youronlyone,
@youronlyone@c.im avatar

@Agent_Karyo Same! 😁

Evoliddaw,

I’m a pledged founder for the past 1-2 years. Game has a long way to go but as other comments mentioned is about as close to the classic EverQuest experience as you can find these days (even compared to EQ live today).

Keep in mind you’d still be testing. Lots of things come and go, things change all the time, character wipes (while uncommon) happen. Bugs resurface and hit at the worst times. I took most of the summer off to vacation but in the spring of 2024 there was barely enough content to cover up to level 35. Seems to have grown quite a bit but I wouldn’t expect there to be any end game content or raiding or anything like that yet. Jewelry crafting profession was present in some form in PA back in the spring but it is lacking from EA so far. Things like that.

That all being said, as someone who’s followed Pantheon for nearly 10 years, they’ve probably made more progress in the past 1 year than the prior 9 combined. Casual gamers will find more than enough but hardcore not so much.

jerakor,

It’s EverQuest. If you liked Classic/Kunark era EverQuest then you might like this game. The gameplay is very simplistic and heavily leans into you needing to manually go out and build a group of people that have the right classes. You go to an area and kill the same mobs over and over for a couple hours and hope you get something neat or a level.

Agent_Karyo,
@Agent_Karyo@lemmy.world avatar

Never played MMOs while growing up, dialup was of horrible quality and parents wouldn’t pay for subscriptions back then. :)

jerakor,

Every year they relaunch classic EverQuest time locked progression. They did that long before WoW did and WoW hired their studio lead to help them improve their implementation of it.

I’m not recommending it, just saying you could still go experience it today. I’d maaaaybe recommend it over Pantheon but it is close.

you had me until MMO.

johntash,

I’m cautiously optimistic. I think it’s mmo the same way Rust is mmo, not Wow.

M137,
@M137@lemmy.world avatar

It seems to be MMO in a way I am interested, where you can basically play it solo and not be forced to play against or with other players. Kinda like Minecraft survival servers (with PvP optional), Rust, Once Human etc.

InverseParallax,

Swtor is like that. And it’s great.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

that’s what i was told about SWTOR and that was just as tedious as any other MMO.

Tattorack,
@Tattorack@lemmy.world avatar

Unless I’m mistaken, this game should basically be Conan Exiles but Dune (hopefully with improvements over Conan Exiles).

If this is indeed correct, then it should be possible to play the game offline single player, or set up your own server to play with your friends.

I’m definitely looking forward to this game.

It’s looking good from what I’ve seen so far.

Can’t get my partner to Want to play. “Too much " desert”. Send spice!

the_crotch,

Your partner has a point. I’m not sure how interesting it would be to explore a planet with exactly one landscape

dubyakay,

It also has rocks.

And caves.

And caves with water probably.

Spacehooks,

Lol too me its like saying subnautica is too much water. Yes its the overall state but trailer shows a range that could be fun. Hopefully its not repetitive landscape.

Such a great online game with original ideas and one of the most diversed and interesting PvP of its genre.

A_Union_of_Kobolds,

Man I LOVED GW1. Never really had much chance to play the second, sadly. I still think about playing my Necro in PVP and doing crazy endgame runs. Long time ago…

Second had nice ideas too but very different, not a coorpg anymore and more an actually MMO. PvP was very disappointing, they didn’t keep anything from the 1, probably because it was too elitist. For me the massification made me feel like I was insignificant, I didn’t like it much, I did a bit of the campaign and that’s it.

A_Union_of_Kobolds,

Yeah it just seemed so different. I actually installed it recently and farted around for an hour or so (recently installed Linux on an old laptop and wanted to see how it’d do), I’m not really planning on going back. Think I already uninstalled. It seemed fun enough, I didn’t like hate it, but I’m not getting into an MMO right now.

Either way, I wanted GW1 and this was quite a departure. I really loved things like the low level cap that were out the window.

Nefara, (edited )

It’s definitely not Guild Wars 1, but it does still have a “low level cap” in the way that it’s extremely easy to get to max level doing a variety of content, then the vast majority of content is done at that level. You probably reach level 80 within completing not even 5%-10% of the total available content, so it’s just a number. The way you “advance” your character is through gear and cosmetics, and there’s an account leveling system called masteries you unlock at 80.

A_Union_of_Kobolds,

That’s fair. Like I said, I didn’t play very long so I’m happy to take your word for it.

Good to hear tho, thanks

I think every few years I’m reminded this game exists, and go in to try to check it out - and I still have some account issue where my email is in use but it also won’t send a reset code.

One of my favorite games ever. Seriously one of the best online experiences I’ve ever had.

There seems to be a market for classic mmorpgs. I wonder why Guild Wars didn’t already receive the Wow Classic treatment.

skulblaka,
@skulblaka@sh.itjust.works avatar

I was under the impression that WoW classic came about because nu-WoW was hemorrhaging players to other, better MMO’s, such as FFXIV and Guild Wars 2.

Not much need for a GW Classic if GW2 is still going strong.

MithranArkanere,

Yeah. All GW1 pretty much needs at this point is just the Beyond chapter of Elona and 2 professions unique to Prophecies, one heavy armor, one medium armor. And having Prophecies and Factions weapon drops updated to the new system used in Nightfall and EotN, with inscriptions and more upgrades, and making the upgrades have fixed stats like armor upgrades, so they can get their own trader NPC.
And then rig the trader NPCs to always have supllies at a premium cost so GW1’s economy does not depend on bots to stay supplied.

There’s no way we’ll ever see new professions , and I doubt they’ll ever update the weapon drops. But they have already done some new quests. So there’s still a bit of hope for “Rise of Joko”.

C45513,

It doesn’t really need it, it’s been live and active since its launch. I suppose new content and ongoing updates would be welcome, but I doubt it would make financial sense.

e8d79,
@e8d79@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I think even a relaunch with only the first campaign at the start could revitalize the community. I’d wager there are plenty of people who would want to relive the glory days of Guild Wars 1.

oce,
@oce@jlai.lu avatar

I think it’s a much much smaller player base. It was successful, but WoW was a mind blowing success.

Zanshi,

It doesn’t really need it, you can just buy and play it, and it got a graphics update a while ago, so to me at least it looks as good as it looked back in 2005 when I first booted it up

Nefara,

As a long time fan and proud GWAMM, honestly it doesn’t need the “classic” treatment. It’s still online, and the last major content patches didn’t change anything significant enough to alter the gameplay in a way that would make people “miss the old days”. They added some end game content and some quality of life improvements and some tools that allowed players to more easily solo content, then left well enough alone. It still has a small core of regular players, and has the event schedule going on auto. I suppose they could do some graphical improvements but it’s still a very good game as it is

    Urh that’s the game? Not very 2025-ish…

    No, that’s not the game

    Id that even Dune? The stuff they’re wearing and the setting they are in does not look like the dune that’s shown in trailers… For one they’re are trees and no sand

    I watched for a couple of minutes on the live stream that was on the store page… Didn’t catch my attention and left. But those are some valid points

    AwesomeLowlander,

    No, that’s an entirely different game screenshot, no idea what parent comment is smoking.

    AwesomeLowlander,

    What game are you looking at? That screenshot isn’t dune, it’s some other game.

    @totallyNotARedditor@lemm.ee avatar

    It was what was being shown on dune’s game store page live stream

    MBech,

    Thanks for the heads up.

    Most games that claim to be survival genre are actually just boring crafting games.

    sugar_in_your_tea,

    And that’s why I generally avoid the genre, not because “survival” sucks, but because bad “survival” sucks.

    Thats not a bad thing - I’d be down for a good new western mmorpg!

    I’ll try it when it comes out. I really got hooked by Warhammer Online mostly until it closed (now alive again).

    I never backed it, but I never felt Jacob’s as anyone bad. He put his own money in and I believe they did considerable refunds after a while. Maybe a bit misguided with whatever that spinoff game was. Warhammer Online tried the same thing after he had already left, with Wrath of Heroes.

    If it is fun PvP, I’ll be there. I hope they popularize something new again. I feel like many games have some version of public quests now.

    Agent_Karyo, (edited )
    @Agent_Karyo@lemmy.world avatar

    I don’t think Jacobs is a scammer like Chris Roberts with Store Citizen, but you got to agree the 12 year history of CU does not inspire confidence.

    I say this as someone who enjoyed Darkfall and can’t stand pure themepark MMOs. I tried to get into DAOC, but the UI/UX is simply too old school for someone who hasn’t played it back in the day.

    VerseAndVermin,

    Oh for sure my confidence is way low. I don’t do much early access stuff and CU would definitely not be an exception.

    I want good things for it is all. Seeing a video drop is nice, if only to show a sign of life.

    fyzzlefry,

    Same! I backed the thing and I have no idea at what level any more. Knowing my dumb ass it was probably high.

    What better way to show your game isn’t mired in controversy by disabling likes and comments on your showcase video. This isn’t going to end well, but I hope I’m wrong.
