I used to work with a guy who had thrown away upwards of $10,000 at this game. The last time it came up, he told me he had spent over $8,000, and that was several years ago and he didn't seem to be showing any signs of slowing down. When I asked him what he got for that money, he showed me the one ship he has. He had one ship. The rest were still in development and wouldn't even be released for years.
He spent more than some cars cost, for a handful of digital space ships, 90% of which aren't even finished. I have no idea how to reason with people who do this sort of thing.
I have a bunch of ships in the game. The most fun I’ve ever had in the game was after a reset I ignored all of the other ships I had and just focused on starting with the cheapest ship in the game and earning my way up. I had a blast.
I haven’t touched the game in probably 3 years, basically just waiting for more things to get finished before jumping back in. But it is hard to get excited for the game with how long it has been and how… not good things have been in the company.
These people have a mental illness. They’re being taken advantage of by unscrupulous companies. They’re in exactly the same boat as people with gambling addictions. We should feel bad for them, but not (always*) as bad as homeless folks, who are still worse off.
*One of my elementary school teachers was married to a gambling addict. The guy was secretly hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt and had stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of heavy construction equipment to pay off some of his loans. The guy ended up in a police chase and took his own life before he could be arrested. His wife, the teacher, was left massively in debt (he had secretly remortgaged the family house to pay for gambling debts) and grieving the loss of her husband but also in shock at discovering the extent of his crimes and debts. Really awful situation and nothing but profits for the casinos!
Some people are defending things tooth and nail when trying to reason. Not only things like this either, might be something purchased or some ideology.
Did you mean “empathizing”? I’m having difficulty empathizing with cases like that too. I mean, ugh, it’s mind-boggling, $10k is a life-changing amount of money for most people and this guy threw it away on a game that’s not out yet. Still, people like him are being exploited for personal gain, and that is also wrong.
I mean it’s not like any person has ever to decide between “should I buy something fun” (whatever the definition of “fun” is), or rather “should I just go and donate 100$ to a random homeless dude”
Bloody hell, I spent a little over two dollars buying Elite: Dangerous (a similar space game) when it was on sale about five years ago and haven’t spent any more money on it since. I can’t even comprehend spending 10,000 dollars on an incomplete game.
The idea sounds very very similar to Last Oasis. I heard that just turned into a gank fest on launch so I never played, not sure if it is any better now.
Same as. I played it for about 2 hours not really getting very far the. the server went down for like 2 - 3 weeks (this is in early access) so I refunded. After it was back up all I heard about it was massive gank groups and the inability to play at all solo so I never bothered.
I liked the Palia beta and the Chinese New Year event. The world seems a bit dead sometimes though, and the quests can be boring. I haven't played in a while, I lost interest. I'll have to revisit it sometime.
Wow, I’m surprised too! I wondered if Palia was going to make it due to the financial struggles Singularity 6 had faced. I’m hoping the Palia business model gets adjusted so that it can trickle in more funding.
Agreed, as they weren’t going to survive with their overpriced cosmetic shop being the only source of income. I will admit, I’m a bit worried with Daybreak picking it up, as they have a track record of ruining/killing games (personal experience), but I’m really hoping my feelings are misplaced.
I didn’t know that Daybreak had a history of messing up games! Huh, I’m a bit concerned now. However, Daybreak could turn their bad track record around. It remains to be seen though.
As to their business model, yeah, Singularity 6 could never have survived on overpriced cosmetics that used fake currency to induce more spending. That was a dark pattern choice which gave me pause, I couldn’t justify buying a cosmetic item.
I picked up a few outfits last month because I wanted to support them, but now I’m gun-shy. I’m not entirely thrilled at this prospect. If they add combat or start adding any stereotypical MMO crap (gachapon, pay2win, etc), I’m definitely out; I’ll go play Disney Dreamlight Valley instead.
Of course, Disney Dreamlight still has a premium currency, but at least it isn’t as bad as gachapon, pay2win. Apparently, meeting weekly goals on the free Starpath and finding chests will net the player some Moonstone. Starpath is basically like a ‘battlepass’ except since this game has no combat, it’s more like a ‘living your life’ pass, free and premium in nature. I might pass on Disney Dreamlight Valley because encouraging corpos to utilize these curses in the gaming world feels…counterproductive to me.
whilst i’m happy for more people to have access to games, you really gotta wonder how many people are going to jump into this on xbox. It’s not no-one of course, but it’s not gonna be many
To be fair, they have a pretty large PS userbase and the game is very accessible through controller. I know I would’ve gotten onto it on Xbox if that was an option when I was still on console.
Just an anecdote, but on the ffxiv subreddit and discords I lurk around there have been a LOT of xbox players going through the free trial for the first time. Considering you can play a lot for free and the series S being somewhat cheap, I can see this being a fair boon to the game.
If FF XIV becomes available fully on Gamepass, I’ll definitely give it my time. Yes, I know about the trial and stuff. But I’m not going to pay a subscription to play the full game when I’m already paying for Gamepass. No thank you.
I was really confused for a moment. With that said, FFIV is a great game and I had fun with the 3D remake. I never got around to playing “The After Years” though.
FFXIV will always require a subscription outside of the free trial. Game Pass will only give you the base game. But not all the expansions and only 30 days of playtime.
I understand that, but I absolutely refuse to pay a subscription for a single game, no matter how good it is. Especially since I’m already paying for a Gamepass subscription.
I have to imagine that it will be similar to when FFXI dropped on Xbox 360 after being a PC/PS2 exclusive for years. At that time, it increased the player base dramatically and introduced an entirely new demographic of player to the mmo. It really breathed new life into the game.
Just a shout out to Stephanie Sterling for covering Koticks fuckery since the beginning (on youtube) And Jason Schrier for publishing it (kotaku, now bloomberg, and freelance), even as it has fallen on deaf ears for the better part of a decade. Activision Blizzard has been rife with frat boy culture that kotick promotes would have been a bloody nose on the new face Microsoft wants to put on the company.
Stephenie sterling has been an absolute legend covering this. Been watching the jimquisition for a long time now and i never miss an episode about kotick.
