What type of game do you want to see?

I am a really big fan of base building in RTS games, which is why I never liked Starcraft. Bases in Starcraft feel like they have such little rhyme or reason. They are messy and ugly. I always build a ton of bases in games like Tiberian Sun, that, while gameplay wise, are a waste of time and money, feel fun to build and fun to...

Skua,

If you want pausable combat and a logistics focus, the Hearts of Iron games might be interesting to you. They're pseudo-real-time in that things happen on an counter that ticks forward once per in-game hour of the day (so the results of two units fighting, a diplomatic message being sent, construction on a building), but you can speed up, slow down, or pause however you wish. If you want to zip along at a few seconds of real time per day in game, cool. Want to slow things down to a few seconds per in game hour instead? Also fine. Need to pause while you read a description? Also fine.

Skua,

Seconding Space Marine 2. It's built for three-player co-op, crossplay works smoothly, and it's a super satisfying shooter

Skua,

Paradox's games don't really do storytelling in a traditional sense. They're strategy and managememt games. Some of them are pretty damn good at creating stories dynamically through gameplay, or providing a frame upon which you can create your own stories, but they were never intended to be narrative experiences

Skua,

Ahh fuck, stuff being published by them was usually a decent sign that it'd be interesting in some way. Best of luck to the actual team, I hope they can put something new together

Skua,

Districts were a thing in Civ 6, before Humankind came out

Skua,

Each to their own! I really enjoyed V and have hundreds of hours in it, but I appreciated the changes in VI and felt like it vbecame a stronger game than V overall. I do have more hours in VI. I get that the art style was a little controversial, but I was never playing V for the visuals anyway

Need tips, when is a non-campaign game considered 'completed'? angielski

I like to keep track of my games that I have completed, with most of the games it is pretty easy. When the credits roll, I consider them beat, there are a few exceptions of course like Nier, Resident Evil 2 etc. What I struggle with are fighting, racing games and 4x games. I enjoy these genres, but I don’t know what is...

Skua,

For Civ 6, I'd say winning each victory once. Try to do it with different civs each time too. You can set your goal as winning a game on the highest difficulty if you want, but personally I don't find that to be as interesting as the shift in gameplay necessary to win the different victories without just militarily crushing everyone else.

Skua,

...well I feel really bad about downvoting this one, because it's a really good suggestion

Skua, (edited )

Wipeout. They can continue from Omega, it was great fun. Formula Fusion is a really cool spiritual successor by many of the original minds, but it's a little lacking in content.

Edit: lol, took me four hours to realise that continuing on after Omega rather ruins the title of that one

Skua,

I was actually slightly put off by how tightly it looked like it was imitating the first couple of Wipeout games, like the UI being almost identical and a bunch of the teams being the Wipeout ones with the serial numbers filed off. Like they're unwilling to try their own ideas, you know? If it's so similar, well I can still play the old games. I assume you feel differently?

Skua,

Hah, well maybe I pre-judged it too much. I'll keep an eye out for a sale on it

Skua,

I really wanted to love ESO, and I'm delighted that they'e actually using the weirder lore sometimes, but it never felt like it rewarded my exploration. Like I never learned aything new about a place by finding stuff in it.

Can anyone suggest some good co-op games for two people? angielski

Hello all! My buddy and I finally finished up Baldur’s Gate 3 this week and we are not left with a giant co-op game shaped whole in our hearts. It was such an incredible experience and it was truly even more fun running through it together. We are excited to hop into another game, but we have no idea what to play. We’ve...

Skua,

Games I enjoyed playing with my then-gilfriend:

  • Castle Crashers. 2.5D side scrolling action
  • Skyrim Together, although this requires at least one of you to have a decent level of understanding to get things to work smoothly
  • ibb & obb, puzzle
  • Portal 2, puzzle
  • Shadow Puppeteer, puzzle
Skua,

I don't think that should be terribly surprising. Both those games are targeted at specific niches. They were notably successful for gaining popularity beyond their niches, but they were still niche products. Elden Ring is still incredibly obtuse and will fucking murder you out the gates and just expect you to pick yourself up and try again. BG3 is a D&D game that expects you to know the tabletop version to a degree. Both are awesome, but they're aimed at narrower markets

Skua,

Fair enough on Elden Ring actually, I looked up the sales numbers and it did do very well for any videogame rather than "just" very well for a FromSoft game as I had thought

Skua,

It is working for me, at least. The spoilered text is a good summary of the idea too

Skua, (edited )

This is a healthy attitude. The game offers "easy mode" in the sense that you can use tools like summons, magic, just plain old grinding until you're massively levelled, and so on, but if you're not enjoying it then there's no point playing. It's okay for a game to not be for everyone and good for people to recognise that it's not for them.

I really enjoy the games but fuck me there's no way I'll ever be taking on Malenia. I could use summons and stuff, but what I actually like is the one-on-one dodging fights, so if I did I'd just be doing it to have done it. That's fine. I just have to evaluate the game based on what I get from the rest of it

Skua,

To be fair they're still right to say that there are no difficulty settings on that film, it's just set at fuck you difficulty from the beginning

Skua,

It's okay for people to not want to take several hours to learn to play a videogame. I say this as someone who has taken the time and likes this game a lot

Skua, (edited )

Other people have mentioned Paradox several times, and they are unquestionably the big name of the grand strat genre. Their main games are:

  • Hearts of Iron. WW2 setting, pretty much exclusively about war. If you want to flex your strategic skills, this is the one to get.
  • Victoria. The 100 years before WW2. Primarily about industrialisation. Victoria games have by far the most in-depth economy systems.
  • Europa Universalis. These ones are about the era of European colonialism, spanning three to four hundred years with the Napoleonic wars at the end. EU4 is pretty the most like a Total War campaign map in feel.
  • Crusader Kings. 700 years of feudalism. The map in these ones is limited to Europe, the western half of Asia, and the north of Africa. Distinct in that you play as a dynasty rather than a country. These ones are the most roleplay-heavy
  • Stellaris. This is the only one I haven't played, so I'm afraid I can't say much about it

Steam Summer Sale - Top Deals angielski

Initial scrolling of the Steam Summer Sale seems pretty lackluster, but digging through the comments sections in other threads, a few gems have stood out, and it doesn’t appear we have a thread dedicated to this yet, so post what you think are the best deals here!...

Skua,

Never mind the depths I was already on edge when I met the fucking crashfish

Skua,

Very interested in this. I haven't played Myst, because I've just always found point-and-click to be quite unpleasant. Do I need to have played it to understand what's going on here?

I am seeing that there was a remake of Myst in a similar fashion, so I will take a look at that in its own right

Skua,

Thank you!
