I’ve been interested in trying this game out ever since they posted some early gameplay footage over a year ago. Looks kind of like a mix between Star Citizen (in and out of ship gameplay), Helldivers (4 player co-op/PvE missions), and Sea of Thieves.
Has it been? I just got the email from Steam a few hours ago that it’s Live now. They must be really late to notify everyone in that case.
Looking through the community it looks like they had originally planned to release the demo today, but ended up releasing it early on June 5th, and the game will only be available to play until the 16th.
Sure, larger businesses have more developers to get more work done. But there comes a time when throwing new developers at a problem convolutes the process and actually slows things down more than it helps.
Something that seems simple to you like a flashlight attachment may not be so simple under the hood.
Solo indie devs have an advantage because they’re familiar with all of the code. They’re the ones that wrote it.
They don’t need to learn a new part of the code when making fixes or changes. They don’t need to explain to another dev that “you don’t change how this information is passed in here because you’ll need it to look just like that in some other section that you’ll never touch”.
Additionally any decisions/changes/etc. are all decided by one person, no need for meetings to get everyone on board and explain exactly what you want to do. No need to try to get everyone to understand your vision for what you want to happen.
A famous comic might explain this process a little better:
I mean, it really depends on how you define scam. If you’re so loose with the definition that you would have considered No Man’s Sky a “scam” when it first released, then I can understand that.
Otherwise it’s not really a scam. There’s a free trial going on right now in Star Citizen. You’re free to check out the game for yourself. It’s in a really good state compared to what we’ve previously seen (not even close to bug free, but way more playable than before).
Maybe some people just don’t like grinding for hours and hours to replace stuff they already acquired in a video game.
Personally, I would rather that we have a variety of different game types and options. There aren’t very many MMOs that make death feel meaningful. If it’s not your type of game, then don’t play it.
I get that Steam is where everything and everyone is at. And that the user experience and functionality is best there BUT having another player to try an compete with Steam is a good thing, right?...
Actual card battle games like Magic the Gathering.
Or deckbuilding like those castle/turret defense games.
I’d have to agree with @iAmTheTot, I’ve never been a fan of roguelike games where your next move/ability is left up to what you draw from your deck next.
I know I remember seeing some people talk about how nice some of the environments in Hitman were, and that they’d just walk around as a tourist from time to time, treating it like a walking simulator/virtual tourism thing instead of the stealth assassination game it is. Curious about other things like that, where you play a...
Issues like that are usually related to windows security settings which block applications from modifying the contents of user specific folders.
If a game likes to write save files to those locations and you have enabled ransomware protection, you’ll need to allow an exception for it:
Go to Windows Security -> Protection History -> Protected folder access blocked (look for the game’s executable in this list) -> Actions -> Allow on Device
No problem. Unfortunately the prompt for an application being denied access usually only shows up when the game first creates a save point. So you might have to get just far enough until the game saves to trigger it.

I did a quick search but couldn’t find any issue with their anticheat.
From what I could find, it’s not a kernel level anticheat.
As far as damaging hardware, reading from a drive doesn’t really degrade it much at all, the bigger concern there would be if it was writing to your drive a ton (but honestly you should worry more about Window’s Page File system since that makes it possible to use your storage drive as RAM).
I found a post from one player on the steam forums with concerns about the anticheat because their system kept crashing, but that sounded more like an isolated incident (or more likely related to the Intel CPU issue that was confirmed that same year).
There is a highly upvoted review for the game which has concerns about the anticheat reading all files on a drive and “overloading your processors (ignoring frame-rate caps and going past it).”
I agree that reading every file on a drive is concerning, I’d rather any anticheat stick to just the game’s folders itself.
However, I’m wary about their understanding of programs/computers if they think that anti-cheat software should be limited by, or has anything to do with frame-rate caps. Also, they don’t provide a source for any of their information or how they tested it.
Most other cocerns about anti-cheat quoted that same review in one way or another.
One of the better unknown games I’ve played. It’s free right now. Give it a go if you like rogue-like/souls-like types. Very rewarding gameplay (and pretty difficult).
I think that’s a fair question given how it initially launched.
I’m no longer falling through the map. I can’t remember the last time that happened (except for the early days of the game).
I’ve only seen other players joining my world getting stuck inside of rocks when they initially spawn in, but you can just get out by spawning a pal that you can mount right next to the rock that you’re stuck in. Edit: Note: This bug is rare and doesn’t happen often anymore.
Allies: aren’t getting stuck anywhere near as often at my base compared to what they were doing near launch. I haven’t noticed it recently, but they likely still get stuck depending on how complicated your base gets. Beyond that, any pathfinding is fairly basic, they’re not smart about it.
Enemies: I’ve seen them navigate through trees and up simple mountain trails when they’re running away from me. And if you attack them, and hide up on a nearby cliffside they usually just get stuck at the cliffside below you trying to walk into the wall.
Dumb/Static enemy behaviour:
Yeah this is still very basic. They usually stay in the same place unless they are running away, chasing you, switching targets, or using an ability that forces them to move. It’s trivial to just hide behind a tree or a boulder and attack them until their health is low enough to catch. They won’t actively try to adjust their angle of attack to compensate for objects between you and them.
Character clipping issues:
The only player structure I still have clipping issues with is one structure meant for increasing your storage/showing off pals at your base. Even then I only saw one player get stuck in it once recently. But he was probably jumping around on top of it for that to happen. It’s rare to see issues at the level we saw at launch.
Really weird physics issues:
The one I can remember off the top of my head was where an attack could launch a character up into the stratosphere and then they would fall and instantly die when they finally hit the ground. I haven’t seen anything like that in months.
I thought this was a joke but it seems like it’s actually legit. WoW, which has a subscription and paid expansions, just added a $90 item to their store. This is Korean MMO levels of absurdity. What do you think of this?...
Not just the U.S.
Avalanche Studios has their headquarters in Sweden and they’re closing their studio in Canada (per this article). Additionally, Phoenix Labs (Dauntless & Fae Farm) is a Canadian game developer and they just let go of a significant number of developers and cancelled all future projects (about 3 weeks ago): pcgamer.com/…/dauntless-developer-phoenix-labs-la…
While Microsoft was the one shutting down multiple Game Developers last month, those studios are also based all over:
Tango Gameworks - Japan
Alpha Dog Games - Canada
Arkane Studios - (Headquarters in France, but shutting down their Studio in the U.S.)
Roundhouse Studios - U.S.
Well… good thing I’ve been buying what I can through GOG… but this is terrible news, especially with the way Microsoft has been shutting down gaming studios recently.
Edit: meh, this just sounds like clickbait:
The leak comes from an unknown and unreliable source in the gaming industry.
Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard faced regulatory challenges, making the merger with Valve unlikely.
There’s a place for AI in NPCs but developers will have to know how to implement it correctly or it will be a disaster.
LLMs can be trained on specific characters and backstories, or even “types” of characters. If they are trained correctly they will stay in character as well as be reactive in more ways than any scripted character could ever do. But if the Devs are lazy and just hook it up to ChatGPT with a simple prompt telling it to “pretend” to be some character, then it’s going to be terrible like you say.
Now, this won’t work very well for games where you’re trying to tell a story like Baldur’s Gate… instead this is better for more open world games where the player is interacting with random characters that don’t need to follow specific scripts.
Even then it won’t be everything. Just because an LLM can say something “in-character” doesn’t mean it will line up with its in-game actions. So additional work will need to be made to help tie actions to the proper kind of responses.
If a studio is able to do it right, this has game changing potential… but I’m sure we’ll see a lot of rushed work done before anyone pulls it off well.
@sugar_in_your_tea proposed this theory the other day, and I think it makes a lot of sense. A lot of journalists are feeling threatened by the onslaught of LLMs so I would expect to see a lot more news attempting to shine a negative light on LLMs in any way possible.
That makes sense, but I haven’t seen any official announcement from Steam saying that they did this. Only speculation from random people. Any documentation I can find just seems to point to this being a decision that’s made by the company releasing the game (or in this case Sony as the publisher).
I doubt that Steam is still trying to block additional countries given that Sony has already announced that the PSN account requirement is being withdrawn.
“Generally it’s not a good idea to tell people to refund and leave negative reviews when you’re a community manager. TIL,” Spitz said. “I appreciate all the support and I appreciate even more that everyone can play the game again without restrictions. I knew I was taking a risk with what I said about refunding and changing reviews. I stand by it. It was my job to represent the community, that’s what I did.”
They added: “I wanted to work for Arrowhead because they’re my all-time favorite studio. I got that chance. I’m thankful for that opportunity. I’d happily continue working for them if I had the choice, but that isn’t up to me or anyone else in here. I can walk away happy and I don’t want anyone causing trouble on my behalf, especially not to people I still have a lot of care and respect for.”
This definitely sounds like Sony wanted them out and Arrowhead wanted them to stay.
