dgkf, do gaming w The Mario Party Stigmata

I fell victim to this one on authentic “retro” N64 hardware, which has a hard plastic analog stick. Got an enormous blister right on the palm of my hand trying to win this tug of war. Of course, my young brain was able to hyperfocus on the game and completely tuned out any sense of pain in my hand. It was quite gruesome when I finally beat it and realized my hand was torn to shreds. I was at my neighbors place and I remember how shocked their mom was. She applied some cream that I think was meant for severe burns.

Nintendo would later run a campaign where they’d send you fingerless gloves for free to try to do some damage control on all the negative press when reports started popping up.

SlyLycan,

Yeahhh. I made my palm bleed trying to beat (I did, the first of anyone in my family lol) the Boo when he is coming for you on the stationary bike on what I think was Mario Party 1. I ended up being grounded for over a month lol.

It was only earlier this year that I learned about that glove campaign though. I would have loved a pair of those haha.

WCW vs. NWO World Tour was my jam

You_are_dust,

I had one friend that had that game, I had WCW vs NWO Revenge, and then later on the pinnacle of wrestling games, WWF No Mercy.

MelodiousFunk,

I would like to introduce both of you to the wonders of Virtual Pro Wrestling and VPW2, Japan-only games using the same engine. VPW2 tops No Mercy IMO, if for nothing else than by the sheer breadth of the roster. It’s just a shame that out of the box so many wrestlers needed so much tweaking to get around the lack of licensing. But the fact that it was possible to “fix” everyone was fantastic.

You_are_dust,

I will have to check that out. Since it’s Japanese, do I need to look for an English patch or does the normal rom have English text?

MelodiousFunk, (edited )

If you’re familiar with the English versions, navigating the menus in Japanese isn’t bad. The whole roster can be edited, and part of that is being able to change the names to romaji/English. I believe there’s a patch available to take care of most if not all of that. Let me see if I saved the post where someone else told me about it.

Back in the day I did all of those edits by hand on the physical cart. I still have the cart… one day I’ll boot it up again in the hope that the battery hasn’t died.

Edit: I think this is it

hack64.net/Thread-Virtual-Pro-Wrestling-2-freem-E…

You_are_dust,

Awesome. I appreciate that. I’ll pray to the battery gods that your cart still has all your save data on it. Most of my carts are still good. A couple Gameboy carts no longer hold save data, but otherwise all good. Someday I am going to look into replacing those batteries.

Albbi,

Def Jam 2: Fight for NY was basically a wrestling game, but with rappers instead. Still had the same mechanics as those wrestling games where you couldn’t only lock onto one enemy at a time, and cliches lead to wrestling moves. But everything was pretty well polished and the finishing moves were straight up insane violence.

I like them as well cause they‘re simple, short, and don‘t overshare. Just one purposeful screenshot and some tidbits about the game where you think „good for you, dude,“ drop a like, and move on with your life lol

TacoEvent,

I look forward to these with every refresh of my Lemmy feed. I don’t want an endless loop of “news”. I just like hearing from normal people enjoying games.

  • Stovetop,

    I get that the content isn’t for everyone, but could always block OP or just keyword filter depending on what frontend/app you use to hide the content if you don’t want to see it.

    ThatWeirdGuy1001,
    @ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world avatar

    I don’t like how everyone’s initial reaction is to tell people to just block everything they don’t like. Isn’t that exactly how you create an echo chamber?

    Stovetop,

    Depends. Echo chambers are also created by upvote/downvote ratios. If the majority are upvoting a lot of content you have no interest in, filtering that content is also a way to avoid an echo chamber from dominating your feed.

    I browse a lot by Everything because my limited list of subscribed communities don’t yet publish enough content to really fill a day’s worth of browsing, so there are a lot of things I’ve blocked just because it’s not interesting to me, or if I am not really the intended audience (e.g. a lot of sports communities for teams I don’t follow, german-speaking communities from feddit.org, etc).

    I don’t often have to resort to blocking specific users, but there’s a very small handful of names who post a large volume of content I want to filter but also don’t use consistent communities or keywords that I can cleanly filter instead.

    CatZoomies, do games w Random Screenshots of my Games #21 - Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
    @CatZoomies@lemmy.world avatar

    One of my favorite gaming experiences. For anyone reading this, it’s a must play. It’s not the greatest game of all time, but the audio experience combined with the heartrending story make an emotional package.

    shalafi,

    How is it played? 3rd person?

    CatZoomies,
    @CatZoomies@lemmy.world avatar

    So the camera is third person, but you of course experience the game through the eyes of Senua! You feel her courage, her fear, and her strength and grit as she pushes forward to solve her problem (no spoilers here).

    While you play as Senua, you also get to hear Senua’s voices. Lots of voices, and it is an eerie and tough experience to get through. They will uplift you, praise you, beat you down, scare you, make you feel rotten. And it’s absolutely best to play this game with headphones - trust me.

    I can’t praise this game enough. For me, it was about an 8.5/10. I only had a few nitpicks with gameplay, but the story beats, heartrending story, wonderful voice and motion-capture acting, musical score, art direction, etc is such an experience.

    russjr08, do games w People seem to really dislike Destiny 2. Why haven't they ended it yet?

    Destiny definitely isn’t in its greatest state right now (and honestly, hasn’t been in a while).

    The answer to why they haven’t “ended it yet” is: Because it still makes them money.

    Realistically though, if you look at any big discussion for a game you’ll always find people who dislike it (because they tend to be louder than the people who are spending their time playing the game instead).

    Localhorst86, (edited ) do games w What are your favorite racing games?

    Favourite racing game is always highly dependent on what I am looking for.

    Forza Motorsport 4 (Not Horizon) was one of the best racing simcades i’ve enjoyed playing, it has solid sim-ish racing and it is very satisfying to build up a garage and take a car for a spin on some of the gorgeous original or real life racetracks. Unfortunately, it’s an xbox 360 exclusive and not backwards compatible on xbox one or series x, so not really playable on current systems. I am stll looking for a similar experience on a modern pc.

    I also enjoy “Project Cars” and it’s sequel “Project Cars 2”. I can easily play the games on my current PC or the Steam Deck, but the game can be challenging on a gamepad - not impossible, but managable. It does lack some beautiful original tracks as it only features real life circuits and it does lack the satisfaction of having to “earn” and build up a collection of cars and making them your own. Unfortunately, both games have been delisted on storefronts and can no longer officially be purchased, but if you can get your hands on a PC Key, you can still enjoy the games on a modern system.

    If I want to enjoy some sim racing, I’ll go with Assetto Corsa or Assetto Corsa Competizione. Great fun with a steering wheel, not really my thing with a gamepad. Modding possibilities for AC are basically endless on PC, but again, lacking some sort of progression system that will allow you to build up a car collection.

    Forza Horizon 3 with its Hot-Wheels Expansion was probably my favourite open-world arcade racer, unfortunately it’s also delisted, and while I still have the physical xbox one version, that means I can’t play it on PC. Forza Horizon 4 (with the Lego expansion) is the next best thing (still far better than FH5) and is still available on PC, but will also be delisted in december (grab FH4 while you still can!)

    I have also spent a lot of time playing Burnout Paradise, but I still prefer Burnout Revenge over it’s younger open-world brother.

    Wreckfest is a great spiritual succesor to the already great Flatout 1/2 and certainly the best banger racer you can currently get. The damage model is very convicing and it’s good fun to wreck some CPU racers.

    BLUR - an underrated battle racer, with a really fun 4 player splitscreen. Calling it “Mario Kart with real cars” is, imho a bit too simple, but it does get the point across quite well.

    Need For Speed: Most Wanted (2005) - early 2000s yellow/brown tinted aesthetics aside, the game still looks good today and police chases can go on forever. Great fun.

    Not a racing game, but a honorable mention: American/Euro Truck Simulator 2, bought it as a joke back then, but it does feel cathartic at times.
