wh0se, do gaming w Just fuck off back to ranked already

I’m surprised nobody mentioned GTA Online. I find it unplayable since turbo bike jets are flying everywhere and firing missiles from a kilometre away.

And the goal isn’t even to kill players.

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

It was unplayable at launch and I don’t mean the insane server problems. I started playing GTO launch weekend and it was never good. Sure we didn’t have the insane vehicles and weapons of later GTO but people had more than enough. Every server had at least one dude with a Rhino and one dude with a Hydra. I was the dude with the Hydra but my targets were dudes with Rhinos who went after random players. After a while doing it I realized it was every Rhino. People just get bored and start using the powerful stuff on randoms just because they can.

Was always toxic as hell, it was just unaffordable for most people in game. When they gave larger variety on the cheap it just made it worse.

dumpsterlid,

If you look into your heart and realize what you really loved about GTA online was playing it as a multiplayer open world driving game, check out Motor Town. It’s like if GTA side quest driving jobs were fleshed out into an entire game. Or like if old school Top Gear made a Euro Truck Simulator game.

GTA 2 and Warcraft 2 were the best in their respected series

GoTeamBoobies,

WC2 was my first RTS

I had lan parties with GTA2, such good memories

gamermanh,

GTA 2… Best

Bold opinion, got a reason?

SupraMario,

Cause it was really the first of it’s kind and was on a console. GTA while was also console released was a lot different and not as polished.

This meme was made by someone who didn’t grow up during the time of top down games, WC/WC2, FO1/2 and GTAs all were insanely good for their time.

evranch,

GTA2 and 3 might as well have been different series for how different they were. Both were great but I’ve always wanted to see a top down successor to GTA2. The game was much goofier and the top down view let you kite a ridiculously large police force through the wildest chases imaginable.

GTA2 was just plain fun.

Kind of like how Metroid forked into its 2D and 3D incarnations, each with a separate story and timeline even (The Metroid Prime series splits off after Super Metroid, and Fusion / Dread diverge significantly)

With Prime 4 lost in the pipe somewhere, Dread was an honest surprise to see. Even more surprising was to see it was a 2D Fusion sequel over a decade later! And it felt like a real return to form for Metroid and was a blast to play.

This is how I feel a GTA2 sequel could be received, but they would need some way to identify it from the 3D titles that most people identify as GTA now.

Maybe even an HD remaster with some new content would be well received. I would love to play GTA2 again in HD.

flambonkscious,

Out of interest, did you play GTA 1?

evranch,

I never had a chance to, I was pretty young when 2 came out and had never even heard of the original game.

Kelly,

Kind of like how Metroid forked into its 2D and 3D incarnations

Most people use Zelda as their example for the phenomenon

evranch,

I would be surprised to see another mainline 2D Zelda though, Zelda has pretty much been 3D since OOT except for the DS games.

Metroid had gone the same way and that’s why Dread was such a surprise to see and I feel like top down GTA would be the same sort of thing.

I doubt we will see something like Dread from the Zelda series after BotW/TotK were such expansive open worlds, Zelda just seems to be getting bigger.

zod000,

Stop saying sad and probably true things! We need another 2D Zelda.

Olhonestjim,

Did you try Chinatown Wars? I thought it was pretty awesome.

evranch,

I thought it was just a mobile game and ignored it but it actually looks like a real game and pretty good, I should check it out! Too bad for some reason they overlooked a PC release, have to play it on DS emulator in low resolution I guess.

Play The Witcher 2. Seriously.

Now TW1… shudders

BmeBenji,

I may be in the minority, but I went and played the first 2 Witcher games (and then the 3rd again) with the intention of seeing how CDPR grew as developers before I played Cyberpunk and I was blown away with how they have ALWAYS been good at making a game atmospheric and immersive. Yeah, the first game the whole combat experience is janky AF (but fun in its own way) and a few of the key character models (Zoltan shudder yeesh) look horrifying, but the game, story, atmosphere, and storytelling that made the Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 great were all present and noticeable in the Witchers 1 and 2

Ookami38,

I feel like that sentiment only applies visually. The world and story of 1, as well as the gameplay if you accepted it was more of an RPG than an action game, felt much better than 2 did, imo, it just looked like absolute shit.

RavenFellBlade,
@RavenFellBlade@startrek.website avatar

I just struggled hard with the gameplay. Some games throw up road blocks, but TW1 threw up entire mountain ranges for me. Maybe I just didn’t quite get something in the mechanics, but it felt like the game would routinely go from playable, to “die incessantly until you grind and overlevel”. A lot of the game’s difficulty felt like it was just level-gating progression blocks. Maybe I was just trying to go too fast? I admit that I may have just brute-forced my way through things that probably had a more nuanced or subtle solution.

This is also not to say that I dislike TW1 at all. I quite enjoyed it. It just frustrated me more than 2 and 3 combined.

Soggy,

Witcher 1 did want to be more meticulous. Researching the monsters, making specific potions or coatings, using the right weapons and juggling fighting styles, collecting sexy lady cards, balancing swordplay with signs, navigating political choices thay would be completely abandoned in the sequels…

Dudewitbow,

i played 1 and 2 before 3 launched. Allowed me to appreciate the choices i made in 2, and while the plot of 1 for the most part is virtually disconnected from the rest of the series outside of Foltest, gives you appreciation for the heart of stone dlc in 3 when you revisit Shani (especially since i went the Shani route over the Triss one).

because of how disconnected 1 is as a story, it almost could be a side story as its very self contained outside of Foltest’ role inthe universe.

kratoz29,
@kratoz29@lemm.ee avatar

I think TW3 already spoiled me all the plot of TW2.

sleepmode,

Every time I go to try it. “Tf do all these words mean?” I have no idea what is going on. I need to sit down with a guide or something. But got distracted by ESO and was able to dive in immediately so I guess it’ll be 20 years before I repeat the process.

TwilightVulpine,

There’s a steep learning curve as far as the basics go, but once you level up a frame, a couple decent weapons and some basic Mods (stat-up accessories), it might get you for good. I played if for years and it was pretty fun.

One of the big stumbling blocks is that level up by itself doesn’t do anything but open up slots for Mods, it doesn’t increase your stats. You need good mods and to rank them up to actually get stronger.

CluelessDude,

I was just checking if anyone had typed this because I was going to, after a couple of months in hiatus I’m hooked on it again.

Adams wrote most of the text of the game. He also created another INFOCOM game, Bureaucracy, which was basically impossible. And if you don’t believe me, check out a walkthrough sometime. WalnutLum, do games w Nintendo has sent a DMCA notice to Ryujinx forks

Why is Ryubing beyond reproach? I don’t see them doing anything differently than Ryujinx.

drislands, do gaming w Small, incremental improvements don't make shockwaves like the old massive tech leaps used to.

The problem as I see it is that there is an upper limit on how good any game can look graphically. You can’t make a game that looks more realistic than literal reality, so any improvement is going to just approach that limit. (Barring direct brain interfacing that gives better info than the optical nerve)

Before, we started from a point that was so far removed from reality than practically anything would be an improvement. Like say “reality” is 10,000. Early games started at 10, then when we switched to 3D it was 1,000. That an enormous relative improvement, even if it’s far from the max. But now your improvements are going from 8,000 to 8,500 and while it’s still a big absolute improvement, it’s relatively minor – and you’re never going to get a perfect 10,000 so the amount you can improve by gets smaller and smaller.

All that to say, the days of huge graphical leaps are over, but the marketing for video games acts like that’s not the case. Hence all the buzzwords around new tech without much to show for it.

jj4211,

Well you can get to a perfect 10k hypothetically, you can have more geometric/texture/lighting detail than the eye could process. From a technical perspective.

Of course you have the technical capabilities, and that’s part of the equation. The other part is the human effort to create the environments. Now the tech sometimes makes it easier on the artist (for example, better light modeling in the engine at run time means less effort to bake lighting in, and ability for author to basically “etc…” to more detail, by smoothing or some machine learning extrapolations). Despite this, more detail does mean more man hours to try to make the most of that, and this has caused massive cost increases as models got more detailed and more models and environments became feasible. The level of artwork that goes into the whole have of pacman is less than a single model in a modern game.

Squizzy,

Graphics are only part of it, with the power that is there I am disappointed in the low quality put to rrlease. I loved Jedi survivor, a brilliant game but it was terribly optimised. I booted it today and had nothing but those assest loading flashes as walls and structures in my immediate vicinity and eyeline flashed white into existence.

Good games arent solely reliant om graphics but christ if they dont waste what they have. Programmers used to push everything to the max, now they get away with pushing beta releases to print.

Maybe if Yuzu and Ryujinx hadn’t collected hundreds of thousand buckos to fund their operations, and (at least in the case of the former) also use their private discords to distribute ROMs.

Dolphin has a publicly available website, and you can download it right now es.dolphin-emu.org/download/?cr=es

Same is true for Project 64 (but I advise against it since it currently has a security vulnerability) and I presume every other legacy emu. I don’t know, maybe people could look into those and see why nothing ever happened to them.

taiyang,

I think I miss Citra more; unlike Switch and it’s support in Switch 2, 3DS is definitely in it’s twilight years. Did they ever come back or has there’s been any new ones?

Also I second the dolphin recommendation. I played the loving shit out of GC games recently when there was an update that added retroachievements.

Lanusensei87,
@Lanusensei87@lemmy.world avatar

Citra was unfortunately collateral damage for being made by the Yuzu team, but you can find forks made by other people.

rumba, do gaming w The audacity!

There are plenty of 8GB games, we need to lower our expectations.

you don’t get 4k with matching textures and pre-lit levels the size of texas for free.

Go back to 8GB and 3-4 year releases

Psythik,

So what you’re saying is that we need more ray traced games. Don’t have to waste a bunch of space pre-baking lighting when it’s calculated in realtime!

rumba,

That helps. We are heading that way. But as a whole we’re just chasing the prettiest most expensive graphics. Nobody gives a damn how the game plays or how it performs. Or demanding huge worlds, Hi-Rez, high refresh rate, and then bitching about it.
