it’s from the makers of “Heavy Rain” and “Beyond: Two souls”. The player has to play the role of three different humanoid androids throughout the game, and make choices that heavily affect the gameplay. Depending on the choices you make with every character, their story and outcome changes their future paths. It’s a good game, and can be bought quite cheap at sales. The acting is really good IMO.
I’ve got a small backlog of games on my laptop (running Arch Linux with KDE) through Lutris. I usually play with a keyboard and a mouse, but since I sit pretty close to my screen (ik bad habit), it starts getting uncomfortable after a while. So I’ve been thinking about picking up a gamepad for some more relaxed, couch style...
I do have quite a few different controllers, all work fine on linux for me:
Xbox One controllers (newer models, older ones don’t support bluetooth)
8bitdo SN30 Pro 2
Gulikit KK3 Pro
Steam Controller
Google Stadia
The Stadia Controller is not my favourite, but it still works well. I mainly use the Gulikit and 8bitdo ones, depending on the game and wether my main input is meant to be d-pad or left joystick.
The Steam Controller is unique, but I rarely use it.
Bonus points for the 8bitdo Pro 2, the Steam Controller and the Xbox Controllers using AA batteries instead of relying on built in, proprietary rechargable batteries. Pair them with some good IKEA Ladda rechargables and they are awesome.
The Stadia Controller and the Gullikit KK3 Series have built in batteries and therefore come with their own charging circuit.
The Steam Controller does not charge the batteries, you have to use an external AA charger
The 8bitdo Pro 2 comes with a rechargable battery pack that sits in the AA compartment of the controller (similar to the old xbox 360 play-and-charge kits) and can be charged via USB. I don’t know if that charge function is limited to their battery pack, or if it will work with AA rechargables as well. My guess is, though, that it doesn’t, because it would have to somehow identify if the cells are actually rechargable, or if they are just alkaline batteries - trying to charge alkalines can be dangerous.
Allthough persoanlly, I consider using an external AA charger a convenience.
my guess is that a lot of people let the game idle in the background to farm items, that’s why it’s so “popular”. It’s not “active players”, it’s just a large number of people farming items in the hopes to get one they can sell for a larger sum.
Afaik it has been in the top charts for over a year.
First of all:
I hope your health improves. While I tend to not read the entirety of your writeups, I always skim them and then read the details on topics that are interesting. It would be a shame to not find your posts on lemmy anymore, as I prefer the interaction over a microblogging service like mastodon.
as for your question
…have you picked up any games? What have you bought,
I have picked up:
Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy for 3,99€
Supermoves for 0,77€
Mirage Feathers for 2,99€
a bunch of DLC for Vampire Survivors.
Crash Bandicoot is at an all-time-low price, if you haven’t picked it up in a humblebundle years ago, now might be your chance.
Another game I can recommend is “Beyond: Two Souls”, which is available for 1,99€ on Steam. It’s a great story driven game, with multiple endings and great acting. You might also want to get “Detroit: Become Human”, a very similar title in terms of gameplay.
My usual games: Tetris Effect, Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 (openRCT2), Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
But also a few other games: Selfloss, Trans Neurotica and GTA V.
Allthough my Steam Deck will be out of service for a few days, I found a “spicy pillow” in my deck, have to wait for a replacement battery to show up :(
The vita, once modded and not being reliant on Sonys expensive proprietary memory cards, is a really great little handheld. Lots of homebrew capabilities, great ergonomics.
I also bought a PSTV when they were on clearance for less than 20 bucks, makes for a nice little gaming console for the bedroom or guest bathroom.
One of my favorite games was Tearaway, it used all the features of the console (touchscreen, tilt, back touchpad etc) without it feeling gimmicky.
also, it would have been great if Epic linked the appropriate archive.org pages. OldUnreal only hosts windows installers that grab the files off of archive.org
Sim, arcade, simcade, anything. I’m kinda disconnected from the genre and want to know what is considered the GOATs of racing games to try them out....
Favourite racing game is always highly dependent on what I am looking for.
Forza Motorsport 4 (Not Horizon) was one of the best racing simcades i’ve enjoyed playing, it has solid sim-ish racing and it is very satisfying to build up a garage and take a car for a spin on some of the gorgeous original or real life racetracks. Unfortunately, it’s an xbox 360 exclusive and not backwards compatible on xbox one or series x, so not really playable on current systems. I am stll looking for a similar experience on a modern pc.
I also enjoy “Project Cars” and it’s sequel “Project Cars 2”. I can easily play the games on my current PC or the Steam Deck, but the game can be challenging on a gamepad - not impossible, but managable. It does lack some beautiful original tracks as it only features real life circuits and it does lack the satisfaction of having to “earn” and build up a collection of cars and making them your own. Unfortunately, both games have been delisted on storefronts and can no longer officially be purchased, but if you can get your hands on a PC Key, you can still enjoy the games on a modern system.
If I want to enjoy some sim racing, I’ll go with Assetto Corsa or Assetto Corsa Competizione. Great fun with a steering wheel, not really my thing with a gamepad. Modding possibilities for AC are basically endless on PC, but again, lacking some sort of progression system that will allow you to build up a car collection.
Forza Horizon 3 with its Hot-Wheels Expansion was probably my favourite open-world arcade racer, unfortunately it’s also delisted, and while I still have the physical xbox one version, that means I can’t play it on PC. Forza Horizon 4 (with the Lego expansion) is the next best thing (still far better than FH5) and is still available on PC, but will also be delisted in december (grab FH4 while you still can!)
I have also spent a lot of time playing Burnout Paradise, but I still prefer Burnout Revenge over it’s younger open-world brother.
Wreckfest is a great spiritual succesor to the already great Flatout 1/2 and certainly the best banger racer you can currently get. The damage model is very convicing and it’s good fun to wreck some CPU racers.
BLUR - an underrated battle racer, with a really fun 4 player splitscreen. Calling it “Mario Kart with real cars” is, imho a bit too simple, but it does get the point across quite well.
Need For Speed: Most Wanted (2005) - early 2000s yellow/brown tinted aesthetics aside, the game still looks good today and police chases can go on forever. Great fun.
Not a racing game, but a honorable mention: American/Euro Truck Simulator 2, bought it as a joke back then, but it does feel cathartic at times.

Risk of Rain creators Hopoo Games join Valve (www.gamingonlinux.com)
A bit sad their next game is on hiatus, but I’m happy for them. I assume they’ll be working on Deadlock since it’s sort of similar to Risk of Rain 2.
