zabby, do games w Staying up and "bingeing" Starfield "literally saved" this player's life

Oh my goodness, the exact same thing happened with me and Guild Wars 2!!! 😱

I was a teenager at the time and my family burned logs to keep the house warm in winter. My Dad upgraded the smoke detectors so that they were all linked. In other words, if one alarm went off in the basement (where the wood burner was) then every detector in the house would go off.

This sounds great in theory, but in reality it turns out that the detectors would go off on a near weekly basis. Whenever someone tossed logs in the burner and smoke escaped. We got desensitized to the beeping and it became second nature to just cancel the alarm when it happened.

Fast forward to the closed beta for Guild Wars 2 and I was up late, trying to play every possible minute that I could before the weekend was over. My door was closed, headphones on, and I was REALLY immersed.

The smoke detector started beeping. And it kept beeping over and over and over. Normally, at this point my parents would’ve cancelled it. That kind of struck me as odd, so I opened my door.

Ruh roah, raggy.

A wall of smoke was on the other side of the door. And the smell was NOTHING like the usual wood burner smell. It really hurt to breathe and my eyes were not having a good time either.

After shaking my Dad awake, we called the fire department, got all the animals out, and nobody got hurt. The damage was serious, but the entire house didn’t go up. The upstairs needed rebuilt and there was a fair bit of smoke damage.

I don’t want to think about what would’ve happened if I wasn’t up playing that closed beta 😅

Abdoanmes, do xbox w Little Nightmares 3 doesn't have couch co-op to preserve "atmosphere and immersion"

“Co-op was the most requested feature and we had it in our prior games, but we decided screw you, we arent going to put in couch co-op. We’ll make up something about tension being lost, and how it’s not a party game. Oh, but we’ll still have online co-op where the tension will be there because you are sitting alone from each other I guess.”

crisinho, do gaming w Red Dead Redemption on PlayStation has one impressive upgrade

Wouldn’t exactly call it impressive. It’s nice they included temporary tech. It is to be expected if you release a game in 2023. What weighs more I’d argue is what they left out. No improved textures, 720p UI still, no 60FPS - not even on a console that is 10 times stronger than what we had back then.

It’s especially sad if you think about that they already have the whole map of RDR1 recreated in RDR2. It feels like half of the work was already done and they just had to pull through and port the missions. Instead we got the exact game from 10 years ago.

Wish this was on the PS5...

CIWS-30,

Me too. If the sales aren't high enough, Microsoft may reconsider and decide to sell it on the PS5 (probably with some DLC included) a year later or so. It cost them a whole lot of money to buy all those companies, including Bethesda, and they're going to eventually have to recoup a profit from those purchases.

If that means releasing on Playstation again, I think they'll do it rather than risk losing money. Even Disney has learned with Disney+ that having your own exclusive platform and not sharing isn't great business sense. It costs them a lot of money every month to host everything and produce content, and if they don't license out that content to competitors, they can't make their money back.

I can see Microsoft learning the same lesson. Especially given that Disney+ hasn't been profitable ever, and now the red ink is starting to catch up with Disney. If keeping big games from big studios starts losing Microsoft a lot of money, I think they'll fold, at least partially.

gk99, do games w Obsidian says Avowed was originally co-op but it just wasn't Obsidian enough

Lame. There’s no reason you can’t have co-op in an RPG. Wasteland 3 was made 100x better with the addition and allowing me to share the experience with a friend.

MJBrune, do gaming w Microsoft's £1/$1 Xbox Game Pass offer cut from a month to 14 days

Honestly, Game Pass is a pretty good deal if you are okay with Windows. It’s entirely how they are locking in the next generation of players but honestly, if it’s a good deal and you are using Windows anyways (because at this point is far better than Linux, sorry but it’s true.) then there really isn’t an issue. The monthly trial isn’t the reason most people started with game pass. Especially with Starfield going on game pass day one people will be flocking to game pass just to try it.

zachary3752, do gaming w DirectX 11 vs Vulkan: which is best for Baldur's Gate 3?

On Windows 11 with an Intel CPU and Nvidia GPU I’ve had better luck with DX11 at the moment.

Vulkan has been slightly less stable for me overall, and has had more visual glitches.

Meanwhile DX11 has been largely flawless on my system.

I think if you’re using an AMD system Vulkan may be slightly better. But it definitely feels like DX11 is the current “default” option for a reason.

Linux with 6.1 kernel and Kisask-Mesa drivers on an RX 6700XT: Vulkan works better with fewer crashes/glitches for me. Also seems to load a little faster, but that could just be because I’ve used it more so there’s more cached shaders.
