Varyag,

It’s the bit about RIPPING AND TEARING them to bits and rebuilding the Earth at the end.

What game has the best thunderstorm?
@games

Varyag,

Came here to mention just that. Base Stalker has some nice storms, but the mods built into Gamma make those absolutely terrifying. I think I genuinely fear the weather more than any mutated monster in the Zone.

Varyag,

As long as the .modern AAA game development scene is still incapable of making GOOD new games that at least match their old beloved titles, I’ll take the remakes of the old games instead.

Varyag,

This mod is awesome. It can convert any fully vanilla assets map pack into Doom 64 too. And there is a project that recreated Doom 64 maps in Doom 2 format. Yes you can stack them!

Varyag,

There’s way too much stuff in there, but as of right now I think it’s Mechanicus, and the Serious Sam HD remasters, thanks to a recommendation in another thread just now. I also have a couple interesting demos I downloaded. The problem is, I haven’t played anything from my Steam at all in the past month or so. Everything I’ve been gaming has been outside of it.

Also hilariously, these Serious Sam games were the literal first games I bought when I created my Steam account and I never played through them. They were an impulse buy from a friend’s recommendation back in the day but I wasn’t as into boomer shooters as I am now.

Varyag,

Absolutely second the recommendations of Doom and Quake here in the thread. Boomer shooters in general. Even if the movement can be really fast, playing them on your own can be extremely cozy. Just get into the rhythm of circle strafing, shooting and weaving in and out of cover and you’ll be in the zone very quickly. Bonus point, that both Doom and Quake have 30 years of EXCELLENT quality player created content that can keep you playing fresh new levels for as long as you want to. You could play them for the rest of your life, at your own pace and preferred difficulty.

The new rereleases of both games even bundle a mod browser that you can access with zero knowledge of modding, just hop on.

Varyag,

*sigh.*Not everything must be GZDoom and Brutal Doom. The new port is perfectly fine if they’re going to play mostly vanilla. There’s no need to be this angry at everything you don’t understand in the internet.

Varyag,

Depends on what you consider “cozy”. OP listed Medal of Honor and CoD, I think Doom is super cozy. If shooting Nazis or demons is our comfort activity, anything can be cozy. I still desperately need to play Boltgun, too.

Varyag,

You’ve convinced me to finally play Serious Sam. I’ve had it on Steam for years.

Varyag,

I mean, I played several other horde shooters. Firing continually while backpedaling is the most vintage of infantry tactics, after all. I get that these games are old and simpler, but their base gameplay must still be fun if they were so popular back in the day. I’ll at least give it a shot, since I already have them anyway…

Varyag,

also, just noticed your username. Cool Eragon reference, took me a second to remember that it meant “dragon” in the elven language.

Varyag,

Companies want all games to be multiplayer with online live ops and events and a steady flow of microtransactions money.

Varyag,

I’m thinking less bribe and “laughing away to the bank” and more of a “Nintendo threatened to ruin their life with legal fees if it wasn’t taken down”. The frivolity of said case is irrelevant when they just bully normal people legally like that.

Varyag,

I immediately sought out working backups of both Yuzu and Ryujinx. The “bright side” of this situation is that it pissed me off enough to go acquire both the new Zelda game that potentially caused this whole situation by being leaked early, and the game that was at the absolute top of my to-play list: Unicorn Overlord. So far it is looking like a fantastic game.

Varyag,

yeah I had the same thing when I thought I archived the installer for Citra and yuzu. guess we have to go find pre-compiled setups now.

Varyag,

Fuck Nintendo. The emulators are still out there, easily accessible alongside the leaked Nintendo games they wanted people not to pirate. I know I will be doing that even harder now, lol.

Varyag,

Ah yes it’s always a bug after massive community backlash. If there wasn’t much, it’d have been a test, and if there wasn’t any, it was always intended.

Varyag,

The new Kex port is great for it’s accessibility for new players not used to the Doom sourceports scene, but I guess there’s still a few kinks to solve. I still end up preferring to play on my other sourceports (Woof! Is my favorite) but I gotta get back to it to actually finish Legacy of Rust later. At least this new port is MUCH better on the console versions now, if only the Switch version had proper access to the player uploaded addons…

In the meantime Ive been going through Freedoom 2, and I hear people are adapting the assets of the new mapping format into an open sourced version. Looking forward to that.

Varyag,

There’s even launchers that do the work of the batch files for you! I like using Doom Explorer or Doom Runner for that. You set it up with your ports, point it at your wads folder and then you can save preset combinations of mods, it’s so practical.

Horse archers ruin every game they are in. angielski

Who the hell finds it fun to either waste time trying to lure them into a trap or chase them down? And it’s so much worse against ai because they don’t need to micro manage the way humans have to so it seems whenever I use them they get wrecked under the first half assed volly from any unit. This applies to literally any...

Varyag,

The age old conundrum of the unit that may or may not be strong in real combat situations, but becomes absolutely gamebreakingly busted when added to videogames, because it’s strenghts translate into overwhelming advantages with none of the real life drawbacks it had to endure, usually via game design, bad balancing or games putting said units in unrealistic situations.

Take for example anti-aircraft guns since WW2. Other than the obvious real example of the FlaK88 being turned into an AT gun by the Germans, several others of these become anti-infantry or even anti-armor rapid firing nightmares in war games, because they’re put well inside their optimal range and within threatening range of infantry and tanks. Which would usually destroy them from afar. The OTO Melara gun is a good modern example. Italian radar guided 110mm naval gun, was never mounted onto a proper line vehicle that was adopted by any country. But the prototypes, like the OTOMatic, absolutely terrorize every game where they appear, as a hyper accurate, rapid firing, high damage anti-everything gun.

Horse archers are just the ancient ages example of that.

Varyag,

Well, over the past week I finished my second full Hard run of EDF6 with a modded class, and I updated several mods on other games. Got the updated Shutoko Revival Project on Assetto Corsa, the new Gran Turismo 4 Spec II, which I’m enjoying a lot, feels like a new game. And the Dawn of War Unification team pushed out a minor patch for the 20th anniversary of the series. I am also considering upgrading my old build of STALKER Gamma from late last year to the current one. My setup is working but they added a lot of new things since then that I want to check out, like new early game guns.

Varyag,

Yeah except Palworld has joined Sony for their multimedia franchise, so potentially they can get a lot of monetary and legal support from that. Nintendo took way too long to actually do this frivolous lawsuit.

Let them fight.

Varyag,

It’s amazing that it’s still the best rally sim to this day. This game is old enough to drink in the States.

Varyag,

Welcome! Emulation is probably my favorite method of gaming nowadays, giving me access to most of the classics of gaming from over 20 years of history all at once. If you have a decent computer you get get everything up to the PS3 generation easily, and a less powerful one or a phone can go up to the PS2 or PS1 gens, still giving you plenty of gaming options. I have found so many games and genres I would normally not get into, by trying them out via emulation. Arcade games, especially. I love arcade shmups of the 90’s and early 2000s.

there is an emulation community on lemmy.ml and another at lemmy.world but I would understand if you don’t want to interact with those. I am kinda surprised dbzer0 doesn’t have one.

Varyag,

Hm. Maybe I’ll do it, then. Don’t know if I got the patience to admin a community but I am an emulation enthusiast.

Varyag,

I really want to get one of those.

Varyag,

Although I grew up with Playstation controllers in my hands, ever since I tried an XBox 360 controller I never went back. I’ve been using XBone controllers on my PC for years now, and I just love the ergonomics of them in my hand, the clicky D-pad, the rounded buttons. I’ve always hated the PS dpad, it hurts my thumb. Now, I probably won’t keep buying “original” XBox controllers, but anything with that shape and feels that comfortable in my hand, will be my choice.

Varyag,

Yes, yes it is. The term coined by the Ubishit CEO trying to cover his own ass by claiming that Skull and Bones took so much time and money to make, and was being sold for higher than $60 (while still being a pile of shit) by saying it was a “AAAA game” and the term stuck. I mean, it’s own very first use was to describe a terrible AAA game. It’s only natural.

Varyag,

Monster Hunter and Devil May Cry and Dragon Age: full of insipid, unnecessary microtransactions ranging from regular consumable items, to cosmetics that were usually just included with the game normally. God I love Capcom’s games but I hate them as a company.

Varyag,

I would ABSOLUTELY attend a local tournament for AC6. The netcode is absolute ASS but the gameplay is so crisp, if we could play it without lag or ghost hits it would be great.

Varyag,

Or Quake! Even though I suck at arena shooters, any of them I’d want to hop in for.

Day 35 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games I’ve been playing until I forget to post Screenshots (lemmy.world) angielski

After making a decent chunk in 100% L.A. Noire, i went back to (Modded) Skyrim to take a break. I took this while walking from solitude to Winterhold to start the mage’s guild quest. I believe it’s right outside of Solitude

Varyag,

Well this one was incredibly easy to identify, even with mods.

Varyag,

Armored Core 6 is pretty easy to 100% and it’s really enjoyable the whole way there. Just don’t bother with PvP.

And my favorite 100% grinding game that I keep playing just because I enjoy it so much, is the Earth Defense Force series. The game encourages you to play each mission with each of the 4 classes in each of the 5 difficulty levels. Even though clearing Hard also gives you Easy and Normal completion too, you’re still looking at over 200 hours of gameplay, easily. The games have over 100 missions, tons of weapons to gradually improve, and at higher levels become true combat puzzles to solve with said weapons. Cheese is a way of life, in an enjoyable way.

Varyag,

Swear to Jah, all we need is a proper modern, moddable Unreal Tournament.

Varyag,

Oohh, I heard about that. I’ve just kept playing the community maintained UT’99 and a little bit of 2k4.

Varyag,

It should run, the Unity port before this worked, right? I’ll try installing the GoG version on Linux tomorrow, but I already played it on my Switch too and it ran great. Just like the Quake rereleases
