Voroxpete, (edited ) w Seeking Constructive Dialogue on Mod Removals: Stereotyping Doesn't Help

You start out in 1954 by saying, “Nr, nr, nr.” By 1968 you can’t say “nr”—that hurts you, backfires. So you say stuff like, uh, forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff, and you’re getting so abstract. Now, you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is, blacks get hurt worse than whites.… “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, uh, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “Nr, nr.”

  • Republican strategist Lee Atwater.

Atwater’s point here is that dogwhistles work, and they’ve been a core strategy of regressive bigots for decades.

Today’s hateful bigots understand that they can’t openly say “I want to legislate trans people out of existence, even if that means they all die.” So they engage in layers of abstraction, and wrap their abstractions up in leftist talking points. They claim to be defenders of “free speech” even as they support laws that empty out libraries of books, remove shows from television or make discussion of anything LGBTQ related impossible online.

So to you, the innocent rube, removing a pronoun selection from a game might not sound like an attack on trans people, but it very much is. The mod was a rallying cry, a call to fellow bigots to express themselves while pointedly saying to every trans person watching “You are not safe. We are here, we hate you, and we want to erase your existence.”

The existence of the pronoun selector impacted them in absolutely no way, shape, or form. There was nothing to be gained from its removal other than the statement it made, the proud declaration of their hatred encoded in a language of abstraction that made it visible only to their allies and their targets.

And the fact that they can get away with this; the fact that they can openly torment their chosen victims while the average idiot pats them on the head and calls them a “victim of censorship”… That’s their favourite part.

librechad,

I understand the concept of dog whistles and the historical usage of coded language to advance certain agendas. My primary concern here is not the mod itself, but rather how moderation decisions are made and the criteria used. If we can’t openly discuss these topics, it’s hard to determine what is or isn’t acceptable. I’m not advocating for intolerance; I’m advocating for clarity in community guidelines.

nyakojiru, w Microsoft May Exit Gaming Business If Game Pass Subscribers off Console Don't Increase Enough by 2027
@nyakojiru@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Software and media rental models are meant to die in a close future . They suck

Paranomaly,
@Paranomaly@sh.itjust.works avatar

I get where you’re coming from, but I don’t mind rentals if they are what you are intending. I miss being able to try out a game for a few days for a few bucks from renting it.

I don’t care for it in streaming, though, as when it’s a perpetual subscription I feel much more obligated to play the subscription games than those I’ve traditionally purchased to get my money’s worth. I like playing things when I feel like it. It doesn’t help that each time I’ve tried using Game Pass it’s taken hours to get it properly working and the games to function

Sethayy,

See the latest console they want to make “streaming hybrid” focused? Sounds like the series x is the last console I’ll be getting for a while

FurtiveFugitive, w Unity reportedly considering cap on hugely controversial per-install fees

How about you don’t change the terms people agreed to retroactively. How about if you said “no royalties”, you stick with no royalties and don’t come up with some bullshit fee that works exactly like a royalty.

Jamie, w Unity reportedly considering cap on hugely controversial per-install fees
@Jamie@jamie.moe avatar

I had a feeling something like this was gonna come. It’s an age old trick.

Do something that makes people mad and gets attention.

Let it stew for a few days while you’re “considering” things.

Come out and say you made a mistake and the initial plan was misguided, present the thing you were actually planning to do instead.

Brag about how much you “care about feedback” while still doing what you want

Chariotwheel,

It doesn't work the same here as with B2C products. Excluding hobby developers who wouldn't been hit either way. most people paying for Unity are trying to make a living and a company eradically throwing the pricing model around is not a good look when there are altrnatives around.

People can and will go to alternatives for new projects. Unreal, if you want a marketplace and impressive 3D and Godot if you want FOSS. Not to mention the otber game engines.

It's about money here, in some cades not little amount of money.

Anonymousllama, w Nexus Mods Fine With Bigots Leaving Over Removed Starfield ‘Pronoun’ Mod

Another reason for not piling everything onto Nexus mods, their site, their rules unfortunately.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

We’ve already been made into his bitch, and we’ve sucked it down.

It doesn’t need to, we all know it’s the highest form of art. It’s like mentioning the Mona Lisa. Daikatana is simply implied.

I had no idea 3 different colors could be over-explained and over-thought to such a degree.

For fucks sake. It’s red, white and blue you jackass. Ok, it’s silver, but might as well be the same in a picture. How much did they pay him to pick some of the most basic colors available?

Kiosade, w Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth gets a February 2024 release date on PS5

They need to stop limiting these games to the PS5 and release them on PC as well, and not 2 years late.

Pavidus,

I’m a massive FFVII fan, and that 2 year wait ALMOST lost my interest. I finally picked it up, where it remained the most expensive game I had purchased for a good long while. I was happy with that, because I heard “the other installments will be included!”

Guess I heard them wrong. They lost me. I won’t pay 90 bucks again for another chapter of a 2 year old remake of a 30 year old game.

the_q,

I heard it’ll be a 3 month wait so not too bad.

Kiosade,

Oh good, 3 months is not bad at all, if that’s the case

Fixbeat, w Starfield review - a game about exploration, without exploration

Eh, Bethesda has always been incompetent at making games. Always full of promise, but so clunky and amateurish all the way back to Arena.

curiousaur, w Games consoles are infuriatingly exempt from California's otherwise important new right to repair bill

Ok, hear me out. My intuition tells me its because consoles are subsidized. The manufacturer loses money or breakes even in order to make money back in the games sold. I think Nintendo is an exception. So having the additional expense of having to support them harms the hardware subsidy model.

Kolanaki, (edited )
!deleted6508 avatar

Nintendo has been the only game company I’ve seen be directly vocal against the Right to Repair stuff. 🤔

moody,

I assume that they managed to get it exempted based on piracy concerns.

Frying your console’s motherboard attempting to install a mod chip is not a big deal if you can replace it yourself on the cheap.

curiousaur,

Even better, it would mean those selling mod chips could just buy the motherboards and sell pre modded motherboards.

Cethin,

Maybe, but why should that exempt them? If the model doesn’t work anymore then it doesn’t work. Who cares. They’ll still sell consoles and make money. They might cost more upfront or something, but they’ll still sell them.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Gotta admit… That sounds like a “them” problem. If they want to sell it at a loss, that’s on them. Make console prices more expensive.

Bring more gamers to the PC & Steam Deck.

bob_wiley,
@bob_wiley@lemmy.world avatar

Seems like repairs would increase the usable life of the console, thus allowing the user to buy more games for it, letting the manufacturer get over more money out of that purchase.

What’s the alternative, they fix it for free in a recall instead of selling parts? Someone buys a new console which is another loss for them with limited chance to make it up? The person gets upset and buys the competition’s console?

renormalizer,

Wouldn’t that be an argument for right-to-repair? If the user has to buy another console because theirs broke, the company has made twice the loss for the same number of games bought (or fewer, because the user has less money to spend on games). Reparing looks like a win-win here.

wahming, w Dune: Spice Wars review: a compulsive 4X that both nails and wastes its source material

Was interested, but looking at the steam reviews there’s no campaign, just a bunch of strung together skirmish maps. And it sounds like another case of EA abandoned as full release.

sugar_in_your_tea,

I loved Dune on Sega Genesis, and it had a great campaign IIRC. It’s too bad, because if this had a decent campaign, I’d probably get it out of nostalgia.

raptir,

There’s a campaign, just not a story mode. It’s a conquest-style, like what Dune 2 pretended to have (but was obviously scripted). Like Dawn of War: Dark Crusade or Soul Storm.

wahming,

So… Just a bunch of strung together skirmish maps?
