EtherealMoon, w Cyberpunk's storytelling makes Starfield seem ancient
@EtherealMoon@lemmy.world avatar

Bethesda has put themselves in an awkward spot by promoting niche and deep RPG mechanics for so long, and then becoming such a AAA developer with entire keynotes dedicated to previewing them that they no longer want to risk making deeper complex mechanics because they’re scared of “confusing” the base audience.

I want to say they need to take Starfield as a wakeup call, in comparison to games like BG3. But they don’t need to, because Gamepass numbers are practically imaginary sales numbers, and we’re just going to hear about how well it sold for the next half-decade.

crazyman, w Warfare MMO Foxhole is adding naval combat complete with huge multi-person ships

“Multi-person” doesn’t do it justice. The battleships are designed to be run with a deck crew of 16+. Submarines 8, and destroyers 12+.

It’s going to be a major task of coordination for these things to be run. I’ve seen players have a hard time coordinating tanks, and that’s usually just a driver and a gunner.

tal,
@tal@lemmy.today avatar

There’s that game with untextured polygonal graphics about naval combat that’s aimed towards having several players running a carrier. Dammit, what’s the name of that?

birbboidaseed, w Todd Howard says Starfield was 'made to be played for a long time,' but a month after launch I'm already drifting away

This game feels more like a chore with a million fetch quests. I never made it out of new Atlantis in my play through. Bg3 is so much more nuance and a way better game.

Edgelord_Of_Tomorrow,

The one truly great thing about Skyrim is the ability to just wander and fall into trouble.

That simply doesn’t exist in a game where travelling is a loading screen.

birbboidaseed,

Yeah I don’t know why they can’t make space travel to work similar to NMS. That would have been so much better. I don’t really feel like I’m exploring anything jumping from system to system. Hell even planets to planets.

Kolanaki, (edited )
!deleted6508 avatar

Yeah I don’t know why they can’t make space travel to work similar to NMS

Because the Creation Engine is a pile of shit stacked on top of another pile of shit known as Gamebryo. The only way it even is able to handle high speed vehicles for the space combat is by having much smaller external cells with absolutely nothing in them.

What they could have done, though, is make the planets fully walkable. For some reason, those are also not seamless. You eventually hit invisible walls in any sector you land at. The engine is very capable of handling that, though. Especially if it’s just empty terrain.

Skwerls,

Seriously, I wish they had dropped that engine. It’s so hodge podge and lacking, they had a decade to make starfield in a new to them engine. Instead we get this shit in 2023

Edgelord_Of_Tomorrow,

Can’t believe Bethesda own id Software and at no point set them to work updating the engine to a modern standard.

Tunawithshoes, w Todd Howard says Starfield was 'made to be played for a long time,' but a month after launch I'm already drifting away

While I enjoyed my time I really struggling to find what I feel like I would different on a new playthrough making me worried about longevity of this game.

It really feels like unless bethesda (unlikely) or moders could do something drastic I would not return. Just pick the game back up and do the new thing.

Feels not enough to do by only stick to space. Not enough ammo to not use a variety of weapon. Nor that much other ways to deal with combat that it would warrant a new play through.

Grumpy,

I only played like 15hrs of vanilla Skyrim. But played like 1000+ hrs of modded Skyrim. I’ve now played about 30hrs of starfield. If the modding scene gets as big as Skyrim, I think it would have merit in longevity.

wildginger,

So, what, bethesda games are now just fancy Little Big Planet sandboxes? Where the main game is just something to keep you busy until the real content creators arive?

Tunawithshoes,

Honestly feels like that.

They given many things in the base game fells like that they where more showcase.

Here is background it exists we barely doing anything with it but maybe you find it useful.

Here is new game plus it erases the whole world so if you want to reset world.

Here is enormous skybox. We have no reason why you can fly across the star system but tons of space for you.

Tunawithshoes,

Oh definitely the modding is going to carry. But what point I tried to make is I will need something big for me to consider a new playthrough. Not just adding in bunch of mods to existed save file.

Unlike Skyrim where I felt start over for mods I could actually feel like I had choice and it kinda made a difference in play style to be a mage or a knight.

@war@kbin.social avatar

I tried, it's unwatchable. Some zero-year-old charlatan trying to hype up stealing other people's work, intercut with short clips of his colleagues laughing for some reason.

ech,

I don’t really see the “sucking trump’s dick” aspect there. Most of the video is spent going over the legal framework that was being used by the administration with little to no editorializing. And the end of the video directly calls the politicization of the emergency powers a threat. If anything, I’d say the video was critical of trump, not supportive of him.

Ubisoft is pretty much the most evil gaming company so this is not surprising at all.

Syrc,

EA, Konami and Blizzard give good competition, I wouldn’t be so sure.

mister_newbie,

OOTL, Konami?

meatand2veg,

They rat-fucked Kojima towards the end of development of MGS5 and then raped the corpse of the FOX engine with that shitty MGS zombies game. When that didn’t work they decided to take a break from making video games and transitioned most of their development resources into making gambling house games for casinos. All their IPs went away for a while but I think they’re trying to get back into making games more recently.

mister_newbie,

Interesting. I guess one good thing about them not giving much of a crap about their IP is that we got the Netflix Castlevania series (although, Nocturne, so far, is kinda meh despite its Rondo / SotN era).

callouscomic, w Ubisoft just added Denuvo to Assassins Creed Mirage via a day-1 patch a few minutes ago. AFTER all the major reviews went online.

So even if they had sold it on Steam, this was likely not going to work on Steam Deck? Doesn’t this denuvo kind of stuff cause issues?

jayandp,

Denuvo doesn’t prevent games working on Steam Deck, but depending on how it’s implemented it can cause other problems like preventing a game from launching if it hasn’t been able to connect online in a while, or weird performance issues. It varies from game to game.

potato,

Denuvo works perfectly fine on the Steam Deck/Linux. IDK why people keep repeating this.

callouscomic,

Good to know. I haven’t run into any issues, but I dunno if any games I’ve played had it. I had considered getting Mirage for Steam Deck, but I really don’t want to own it on ubisofts app.

meatand2veg,

This misconception with DRM making it unplayable on steam deck I think stems from 3rd party anti-cheat software flagging Linux players. Denuvo “works” fine on steam deck and Linux as a whole, same goes for anti-cheats. Developers always have the option to tune the anti-cheats to allow Linux players, but only some of them do.

korewa, w Diablo IV Coming to Steam on October 17

I can’t even get myself to finish the story mode, I fun know why it feels boring

CraigeryTheKid,

I finished the story, quite liked it, thought it was great.

But THEN I join you where it just died and got so boring after. I had no problem “grinding” in D3, so what’s different? They somehow managed to make the core of the core game not worth doing.

PM_ME_FEET_PICS,

It took Diablo 3 around 3 years to get to that stage though.

explodicle,

I feel like they’re on the right path with uniques and legendaries in D4. Sets in D3 provided huge bonuses and took up most slots, diminishing build variety.

PM_ME_FEET_PICS,

I ultimately refunded D4 but I suspect I will pick it up again in the future on sale and when they game has improved quite a bit.

0xc0ba17,

Yeah and Diablo III came out 10 years ago. There’s no excuse for Diablo IV.

Diablo III was (and still is) dumb mindless fun, it’s perfect at what it offers. Diablo IV is just boring, with a cash shop and paid seasons on top of it. Like oh sure, I’d love to pay to get a super nice transmog that nobody except me will ever see since the game is super dead.

PM_ME_FEET_PICS,

Diablo 3 was a dumpster fire. D3 players have almost completely dropped off as people either play D4 or D2R.

0xc0ba17,

Oh it definitely was a dumpster fire while the auction house existed. No doubt about it. But if you try it today, it’s a nice over-the-top ARPG.

D3 players have almost completely dropped off as people either play D4 or D2R.

I’m not talking about popularity here, I’m talking about fun. The popularity of a solo game absolutely doesn’t matter.

korewa,

Yea d3 is on top of most hours.

I did play d3 on the first few weeks when it came out and downed Diablo pre nerf. I remember not liking the grind but that was when only DH could effectively farm, I built a full tank barb with life steal and heals

Dagamant,

You could accomplish something in a 20 minute session of D3. You could get a rift done, maybe two, get enough stuff to upgrade something or find a better piece of equipment. You can’t get anything worthwhile done in D4 with only 20 minutes.

yamanii, w Starfield Is Bethesda's Lowest-Rated Game On Steam
@yamanii@lemmy.world avatar

This is easily their best game post morrowind, in both story and gameplay, but I’m also not playing it anymore since it’s so cpu heavy that it’s forcing me to wait for fan patches or something; and I’m playing Cyberpunk just fine.

Cethin,

Is it really? What makes you say that? I don’t agree. There’s no more role play than FO4 (likely less). They removed the “yes, no, sarcastic, more information” wheel but the functionality is literally identical, just presented differently. You have relatively little freedom in how you play the game. The systems connecting things together also do a poor job connecting it. I don’t care for it. I am a huge fan of sci-fi and have been playing Bethesda games for a long time, and this one doesn’t do it for me.
