speedstriker858, w Trouble running Starfield? Todd Howard says 'Upgrade your PC'

Ridiculous statement. I’ve got an rx 7900xtx and a ryzen 7 7700x with 64 gigs of ram @5600mhz and the fucking game barely ever hits 144fps. Usually it’s sitting around 100-110 fps which is playable for sure, but literally every other game I’ve played on it has had no problem staying nailed at 144fps. This is at low-medium settings BTW (for starfield).

Rykzon,

Ridiculous statement. 100-110fps is far above playable. Do people forget how Witcher, Crysis and others ran on release?

fosforus, (edited ) w Extra Punctuation: Bioshock Has the Best Beginning of Any Game Ever

This video has also the best beginning of any game review ever. The binary moral choice bollocks is a horrible trend that should go away already. I guess Bioshock perhaps started it?

Seems like nobody mentioned Undertale’s beginning. That was pretty good. But I’m easily swayed by when the soundtrack is superb, and Undertale’s certainly is one of the best ones I’ve heard in 30 years of gaming.

edit Yes, Undertale also has the moral choice bollocks in it, but I dare to say it was so central to the plot that it was fine there.

CarbonatedPastaSauce,

They definitely didn’t start it. The first KOTOR (and most subsequent BioWare games) had a similar moral framework activated by dialogue choices.

fosforus,

Ah, thanks. Somehow I’ve managed to miss that series completely although I hear about it all the time.

CarbonatedPastaSauce,

If you have any interest in that style of RPG, I’d say playing the first KOTOR is time well spent. The graphics are junk but building your team in a Jedi / Scoundrel shooter looter and solving all the dumb locals problems in sometimes hilarious ways. I guess what I’m trying to say is most of the gameplay is still solid. Think FF active time battle for encounters, it’s very similar to that. Check it out!

fosforus,

Yeah, and now that I think about it, perhaps KOTOR’s moral system doesn’t fall under “binary moral choice bollocks”, since the Yedi vs Sith -thing is a fundamental thing of that universe. Would’ve been silly if that choice didn’t exist in that game.

li10,

To be honest, I’d prefer binary good/bad moral choice options in a game, rather than half assed stories with multiple fake choices with no consequences.

Give me a good story line or an evil one, but make both of them high quality. Or, just stick to one.

BG3 did multiple choices properly. Whereas Starfield (or any Bethesda game) is just a waste of time having dialogue options.

fosforus, (edited )

If you wanted a realistic karma system, the only consequence of doing shitty things would be shitty reputation, and only if you’re caught doing the shitty thing. A powerful enough metaphysical (stretching “realistic” here a bit) being might perhaps catch every time you do.

And it depends on the listener too. Some people should stomach more shit, while some might drop you from their internal list of “good people” on the first mistake.

But all this is probably difficult to pull off in a story-based game.

I think this was intended as a joke about the current state of things.

ExploratrixLunae,

That makes sense haha. I felt it worth asking due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Super Mario Wonder and the new WarioWare already seem to have a different (probably human) voice actor, you can hear it in clips.

It’s really weird reading an article that so precisely nails so many of my experiences with both games.

Sam Coe: “Y’know, captain, I’ve been thinking, I’ve been talking about myself for a long time, but I’ve never really asked you about yourself. It seems to me that you’re a mute of some kind, and everyone just talks AT you, rather than TO you. So I’ve got to ask you, how does a Chef like yourself end up working for a mining company on Narion?”

[Camera turns 180° degrees to face the player like in BG3]

• My name’s FuntyMcCraiger and I used to run a restaurant before we ran into hard times.

You know, mining is a lot like cooking. I like mining rocks.

• That’s none of your business. After being mute for 80 hours, I’ve decided to have good dialogue and good writing because they paid their writers a living wage.

• Shut the fuck up, Sam Coe.

Nvidia and dlss will be required to get titles to run decently.

Darkard, w Baldur's Gate 3 has ruined Starfield for me

Bg3 I think really has shown us what is achievable in today’s games. The branching and intricate story around the Prisim you retrieve at the start of BG3 (without going into spoilers) and the repeated revelations about it and how to can change the direction of the story. Even the companion stories that feed seamlessly into the main plot.

My playtime in starfield is limited at the moment but I’ve been picking along a quest line for a company doing some corporate espionage stuff. But every mission has felt so lackluster. The first mission to “infiltrate” a rival company office and plant a virus. I expected to be putting my stealth skill to the test and breaking into thier server room, dodging the cameras and guards. But what I actually did is walk unimpeded into thier 2 room office space past the reciption desk and though the security checkpoint, squat next to a computer in a cubicle, do the hacking mini game (which is the same as the lockpick one! A downgrade from fallout) click a button and then walk out. I didn’t even have to convince anyone I should be there or even hide my presence.

The following missions were equally uneventful. Run to a “secure” place unopposed, squat, click the gizmo, run back. In one I had to wear a suit, which the vendor in the same building would sell me, and the game even told me that.

Such a stark change from even the simple quest path to out kargha in the druid grove as a wrong 'un in BG3

nantsuu, w Where is Microsoft’s handheld Xbox?

With the Switch 2 probably releasing next year, the handheld market is already pretty crowded as it is. What would differentiate Microsoft's offering from the rest? They didn't bother even when the market was just DS/PSP.

CancerMancer, w September 2023 | Humble Choice: Tiny Tina's Wonderlands Chaotic Great Edition, Deceive Inc, The Forgotten City and more

How is Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands? I liked the first two Borderlands games but I lost interest after that.

@3migo@lemmy.world avatar

TTW is amazing. I am a big fan of the borderlands series but found 3 to be a bit disappointing, but I had a blast with TTW.

CancerMancer,

Ok that’s what I was hoping to hear, I also found Borderlands 3 was missing the magic. Thanks!

JackDark, (edited )

To offer a different opinion, I didn’t like Wonderlands. B1 and B2 were fantastic, but nothing else has come close IMO.

On a different note, The Forgotten City is AMAZING if you’re into time loop or puzzle games.

Schadrach,

To offer a different opinion, I didn’t like Wonderlands. B1 and B2 were fantastic, but nothing else has come close IMO.

The best answer I could give to that is if you liked the Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep DLC for BL2, you’ll probably like Wonderlands. If not, you won’t. It’s basically the same concept fleshed out and expanded into an entire game.

On a different note, The Forgotten City is AMAZING if you’re into time loop or puzzle games.

YES. The Forgotten City is fantastic, a dramatic improvement upon the Skyrim mod it started life as.

JackDark,

I loved TTAODK, but didn’t like Wonderlands. Different strokes. 🤷‍♂️

ReadyUser31,

If you like Borderlands you should play it. It’s got more charm than 3, and the engine is about as good.

So overall I still think 2 is the best game, but TTW is definitely worth playing.

bionicjoey,

BL2 is one of my all time top games.

I hated BL3 and TPS.

Tiny Tina’s is good.

So is The Telltale game incase you somehow missed it.

My 1060 would probably burst into flames at 640x480 then.

    absquatulate,

You might be able to run it ok. My 1660 basic manages 20-30fps on medium-high and 30+ on mostly low settings. The game still desperately needs some optimization, that’s for sure.

maleficentdingo, w Baldur's Gate 3's success is not about setting a new "standard"

Like everyone else is saying, I think the standard for primarily single player video games should be releasing a finished product for a reasonable price. I’m sure I don’t speak for just myself but I’m super tired of things like: unreasonably priced tiered purchase options, cash shops/microtransactions, battle/season passes, twitch drops, preorder bonuses, and just any kind of FOMO in general. It feels like a lot of modern video games are only designed to siphon as much money from the consumer as possible with the least amount of work possible. A lot of these games have no soul and they’re unfinished and broken on release. I just don’t even bother with them anymore.

    CosmoNova,

Some of the things you just mentioned are actually things Baldur‘s Gate 3 did, though. Namely Twitch drops, pre-order bonuses and (arguably) unreasonably priced purchased options with their day 1 DLC. The latter is especially baffling since Larian Studios makes a big deal of not paywalling extra content while doing exactly that from the start. It‘s also guilty of having quite a lengthy early access phase prior it‘s release.

The success does not come from lack of bullshit, but from delivering a good, polished product regardless.

    maleficentdingo,

Yeah, I wasn’t too happy with the twitch drops thing but I caved in and created an account so I could get them. I feel like I let the 10 USD DLC slide because 70 USD total seems to be becoming the standard price for games anyway. They’re not totally innocent of the things I dislike but they delivered such a phenomenal game that I can overlook it.

    fushuan,

The 10€ DLC iirc only has content that references their past Divinity games, I feel like it’s one of the fairer DLCs, given that it’s completely innecesary for the full experience and might even detract from it for non larian fans. I feel like it’s better to give it as an extra purchase than include it in the pack.

Full disclosure I backed/preorderd the game the moment they announced in kickstarter and I have gotten it for 40ish euros iirc, and I got the DLC content for being an early backer. I don’t usually preorder but it’s Larian, they always overdeliver, and this time they did also, while raising the price of the completed game because they overdeveloped the initial concept way too much lol.

    pory,
    @pory@lemmy.world avatar

Huh. I just looked up twitch drops for the game and I have those items. I never made or will make a larian account. Bizarre.
