PeckerBrown, w Trouble running Starfield? Todd Howard says 'Upgrade your PC'

Makes my decision to not buy it even easier.

skweetis,

What made you previously decide not to buy it?

PeckerBrown,

I own many games that I impulse buy, but find out that I don’t care for. That gets expensive.

Now I’m much more selective, and tend to wait until the game’s been out long enough to get patches, updates, and reviews.

Add my lack of interest in any Todd Howard product until ES6, which I may not live long enough to play (boomer puke here), as well as the offhanded arrogance of his ‘upgrade your PC’ statement, and that about covers why I’ve decided not to buy Starfield.

Whirlybird, (edited ) w Where is Microsoft’s handheld Xbox?

There doesn’t need to be one. Any windows handheld can run Microsoft’s first party games.

Microsoft are having enough trouble with home consoles, we don’t need them spreading themselves thin with an underpowered handheld too.

A mate of mine has the ROG Ally and while it’s a damn nice device, when playing uncharted 4 on it to show the performance to me it chewed through like 25% battery in about 15 minutes. You can’t have high performance handheld while having even remotely good battery life.

Heavybell, w Starfield and Baldur’s Gate 3 Revive Age-Old RPG Debate About Encumbrance - IGN
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

Personally I think a good encumbrance system is a good thing in games. For example, look at the Demon’s Souls remake. You can carry as much adventuring gear (heals, grenades, etc) to make your life easier as you like, if you have the stats for it. And if you need to pick up a unique item that is beyond your limit, it can be sent to your stash, which is what the original was missing.

The alternative is to limit consumables, ammo etc to some arbitrary number. E.g. You can carry 5 heals and 5 throwing knives and 50 arrows. If you don’t want knives but want more heals? Fuck you.

InfiniteLoop, w [Spoilers] Starfield's New Game Plus Is Its Most Intriguing Concept, If You Get Lucky

That 90 minute to do a full ng+ run number is kinda nuts but an interesting design choice. I ended up not picking up starfield but I do hope someone takes this novel ng+ approach and expands on it to create a game more focused on that as a story telling tool.

Heck, THIS is what studios should be using AI for - write a solid base story and let the AI build on that to create a more truly infinite and distinct set of new loop possibilities. (I would say your first 5 or so runs should be handcrafted, tell an interesting cohesive story, and then if players still want more the AI can kick in and offer additional replayability)

Pocketyeti, w Trouble running Starfield? Todd Howard says 'Upgrade your PC'

Why upgrade when I will just pick it up on the PS7, 10 years from now, along with the Skyrim bundle.

AzPsycho, w Starfield’s Xbox exclusivity ‘yielded a better product’, Todd Howard says

It worked for The last of Us and Spiderman. Optimization through exclusivity allows the publishers to spend less time chasing down random bugs and rendering issues.

caseyweederman, w Tenebris Somnia is an 8-bit horror adventure with a flashy twist

Ooh. Will I find the front door key inside the jack-o-lantern?

circuitfarmer, w Baldur's Gate 3 on PS5 is effectively the PC version at ultra settings
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Yeah, it runs very nicely on ultra on a variety of hardware. It’s been optimized and has even improved since release.

I am hoping they improved the controller interface, though. I use that even though I play the PC version, and it was somewhat broken as of a couple weeks ago.

Wish my computer weren't dead, so I could at least try to play it. Although my 2070 wouldn't have survived. It runs nice on my Series X, but I hate playing this type of game with a controller.

circuitfarmer,
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I’m a PC gamer who likes playing with controllers generally (from the couch), but damn, I hate the way they adapted run and walk to the left analog stick. Feels horrible. I wish I just had autorun and could hold a button to walk. The key binding shuts off even if I try and force it with Steam controller config, because the game doesn’t technically support split inputs.

Neato, (edited ) w Trouble running Starfield? Todd Howard says 'Upgrade your PC'

Its on Game Pass, Todd. If it doesn't run well I'll just not play Skyrim-Space Edition.

My partner who is interested has a PS5 and an older PC. If her PC doesn't run it, she'll probably just keep playing Stardew Valley. Honestly it's not like anyone is going to really be talking about Starfield in a month or two except ridiculous ship builds on social media.

nivenkos,

I bought a new PC just to play Starfield (and BG3 with less issues).

It looks alright overall. But it’s pretty crazy that even 30xx cards can’t run it well (I had a 1070 though).

circuitfarmer,
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I did a CPU/mobo/RAM upgrade for it – but I was quite overdue.

It looks alright overall.

That’s the thing. It looks alright, but it’s not the next-gen beauty fest that they want people to think it is. Plenty look better and run better. I enjoy the game, but the whole argument that it’s a graphical standout doesn’t really hold water.

I read this Todd like John Conner says it in T2. “She’s not my mother, Todd.”

thanevim, w Trouble running Starfield? Todd Howard says 'Upgrade your PC'

If he's telling us this, does that mean we get to bill him for the upgrade?

bfg9k, w E3 2024 in doubt, as organiser exits and location abandoned

All the things we looked forward to in our childhood are all slowly slipping away.

I am not enjoying getting old.

tegs_terry, w RuneScape reaches mostly negative reviews on steam after introducing Hero pass

My only issue is that the TH keys aren’t available as rewards anymore. But at least the challenges are a challenge again instead of 2 minutes work.

Just more bellyaching from a pampered fanbase.

anticommon,

Pampered? Maybe.

But Jagex really has gone in deep with the MTX and gambling in RS3. OSRS isn’t perfect but if you look at the games side by side it’s in a different league entirely, with the only ‘MTX’ being the membership and bonds which are just membership that can be used for game time or to sell to other players for coins (those players can then use bonds for game time or name changes etc.).

If OSRS got a battle pass the community would revolt.

tegs_terry,

I’ve never spent a penny on mtx

qyron, w Trouble running Starfield? Todd Howard says 'Upgrade your PC'

Not that I’ll be buying it anytime soon but if the hardware specifications I’ve read are true, no graphics card is worth €500+ to play a game. This is bonkers.

deadcream, w Starfield gets low-spec PC mod for those gaming on potatoes

Potatoes? You mean PCs with < $1000 GPUs?
I'm not touching Starfield until I can play it at 1440p 60 fps with decent graphics (yes, actual 1440p, not "720p upscaled to 1440p" bullshit. Neither that nor 30 fps are acceptable to me).

If Bethesda can't be bothered to fix performance and I will need to wait years until I decide to upgrade so be it - I have plenty of great games in my "to play" list. By that time the will also be lots of mods to choose from to make Starfield worth it.

BruceTwarzen,

It's crazy to me that they make the same game for almost 20 years but still can't make it work. The ai seems to get worse every game, computers get better and better but it still runs the same.

salton,

Just from a a couple of nights playing Starfield. The combat ai does seem more interesting then with enemies jumping off ledges to get to you etc but not but a whole heck of a lot. L

Hyperreality,

Wait a year for the modding community to finish it.

When I first played Fallout 4 years ago, it ran at 20fps in some parts of the map and on medium.

Playing it again now, modded to the max, ultra, higher res textures, 60fps everywhere.

Same pc.

deadcream,

That's the plan. I haven't actually properly played F4 yet either lol (tried years ago but dropped due to performance issues). Probably will do it soon after spending a month modding it.

Hyperreality,

Did that on skyrim.

Don't know how much free time you have, but I couldn't be bothered anymore for FO4 on nexus. I just downloaded one of the bigger/better collections and ignored/deactivated the creepier/boobier mods.

Already more than enough of a hassle to get that working, with vortex sometimes not installing stuff properly, pre-cleaning files, etc.

deadcream,

I just enjoy that stuff lol. I only stopped my last Skyrim playthrough because I kept updating my mods and adding new ones and at the one point it just broke all of my saves. I took it as a sign to move on to other games.

Hyperreality,

Same, but realistically once you start heading towards the 500 mods range, it's almost impossible to get it working reliably.

At one point I had 200+ mods on skyrim, and the mod cycles and before/after conflicts on vortex looked like mandelas. I did enjoy 'completing' the vortex mod manager game. That's when it's 3AM, you're fed up, you give up trying to figure what's wrong, and just click randomly and uninstall/reinstall mods until vortex shuts up, and it somehow just works. Bit like winning the lottery.

I’ve never played a Bethesda game at launch.

Or any game for that matter.
