How is the pick not a part of your DC?

MrJameGumb,
@MrJameGumb@lemmy.world avatar

Picks come with me when I get ready to leave the house! Otherwise they stay on the shelf next to the guitars while I’m here, otherwise they tend to get lost lol

@khoplex@lemmy.one avatar

If you’re looking for bifl bag I have to give the obligatory shout out to Goruck. The GR1 has molle on the inside that you can attach a holster to and I’m sure that some of the others do as well. It’s a pack that’s meant to thrive in rough conditions and if you happen to damage it it’s covered by their scars lifetime warranty. I’ve had mine for 7 years now with no issues. The only Velcro it has on the outside is for a patch and I’m sure you can remove it if you don’t want it.

ThrowawayPermanente, w (Request) Looking for a CCW backpack without a lot of Velcro

They’re called belts, junior. Back when I was a kid in the 1950’s everybody wore one. And we were happy!

Maybe, maybe not. Of the people I work with, only a handful even have a notebook. One other uses a Kaweco Sport FP. So for my sample, it’s a mixed bag.

Nice, I’ve got the OG PinePhone. It had some circuit board issues, but I loved helping at the ground floor. Is the PPPro good enough to daily drive yet?

I also keep a USB, but with my Keepass database so that it’s an offline carry. I keep 2 copies additional to that, 1 in my fire safe, and 1 in my mothers fire safe.

etuomaala,

If you don’t mind living without a camera, yes. I think I might be able to get the camera working, but it hasn’t been a priority, because I never used my phone’s camera that much even before I switched to the PPPro.

thantik,

Nice - I never really use my camera anyways, so that’s great to hear.

etuomaala,

Now, though, people want a picture of the rock, and I’m like …shit.

Love my G-Shock. Use it as my everyday beater at work etc. It’s knocked about to all hell, but it doesn’t look bad in anyway (a bonus of the casing being a polymer rather than metal). My only annoyance is that I love in Australia and we don’t get the time synch radio signals down here. So mines out a little bit (it’s only out by less than 3mins, and it’s fast rather than slow, so I don’t mind). Which is why I went with the Casio Oceanus for my more “fancy” watch. Yeah, it is sorta technically a smart watch, but it literally only has two smart functions. One, it can sync with my phone to adjust the time. And two, it can make my phone make noise if I hold down the button if I’ve lost my phone. Now, haven’t actually figured out how to do that second one yet (I’m no idiot, so I’ve asked various friends to attempt to use it too, they can’t either), but I don’t need that feature, so I couldn’t care less (I didn’t even know it was a feature til I had the device in my hands and was reading the manual). But yeah, as far as smartwatches go, it’s dumb as fuck. Which ain’t bad thing, I ain’t giving it any data to send to a server lord knows where…

Very similar to my EDC. I love my Signal, really can’t beat it for the size.

FlashZordon,
@FlashZordon@lemmy.world avatar

It’s great!

SendMePhotos,

Is there any other one you would have bought instead?

FlashZordon,
@FlashZordon@lemmy.world avatar

I had a Leatherman Skeletool for almost a decade before the Signal and almost bought another one when I finally lost it.

SendMePhotos,

I ordered and received the Signal. I like it overall. My only complaint is why is the clip plastic?

constantokra,

I’ve been eyeing the signal for when I actually know i’m working with my hands. I always carry a sog powerpint, and I use the heck out of it. It’s the smallest tool that can actually do real work, so if you want something smaller, check them out. Oh, and you could get them on aliexpress for like 30 bucks last time I checked.

finn1sher,
@finn1sher@mstdn.ca avatar

@constantokra @SendMePhotos Oh and of course if you're looking for something without pliers, a 91mm or 93mm(alox) Victorinox is very good. The cons are no locking tools, one handed blade, or pocket clip

Climber gives you blades, scissors, screwdrivers, can and bottle opener, Huntsman adds a wood saw, Mountaineer adds the metal file/precision screwdriver/metal saw, Ranger adds both. The Huntsman is super cheap from victorinox themselves and the Mountaineer is the most expensive.

constantokra,

I have a champ from the 90s, and the tools are all great, but I mostly find myself needing pliers and a blade. It’s great for.outdoors though.

I actually just finished cleaning up a Swiss army knife I found in a house I was cleaning out. I had the scales off, because it was super nasty, and they were solid in the back, so i’m guessing it’s oldish, which might explain why I can’t figure out which model it is. Everything sizeable I find has the hook, and mine, unfortunately, does not.

You seem to know a lot about them. Any idea what it is, or where I could look to figure it out?

https://lemmy.one/pictrs/image/d5e2ebd1-864a-4caf-8400-a83f653ea837.jpeg

finn1sher,
@finn1sher@mstdn.ca avatar

@constantokra That's interesting. I'd check SAK Wiki or field it with the folks on r/victorinox (they also have a discord server).

The main tools are identical to the swiss champ, but the back tools are a bit different. There's also no sewing eye on the reamer/awl. So maybe it's an older version of the swiss champ. The newer one also has plus scales so it has a pen included which you would see the slot for on this side of the scales.

constantokra,

Thanks! I checked the wiki, which I didn’t.know existed, and it’s a 7 layer champion, from between 1977 and 1985. Apparently that model had a lot of changes in its lineup, the older models did not have hooks, and the even older models only had 6 layers.

Dhar, w A slightly eccentric physicist's EDC

That pen isn’t inked, you can see right through the ink window

etuomaala,

Yeah, I know. Like I told the other guy, it’s a stock image. An image of the real pen wouldn’t add anything except ink in the window, and I can’t take a better picture than whoever did the stock image. The ink in the window looks entirely unremarkable.

/me looks at ink in the window for five minutes with a bright light backlighting the window.

Yeah, the ink in there is entirely unremarkable. It’s just grey air bubbles and black water. IDK, you want a picture of the ink window anyway?

Is the Leatherman Signal designed for networking? I’d love if mine could cut and strip wires

hamtron5000,

I think it’s designed for outdoorsy stuff as it also has a firestarter component. but it definitely works well for basic networking stuff too!

sangriaferret, w Multitool

I just got this exact one. I had to oil it up a bit because it was really stiff but now it works great. I ditched the huge sheath it came with and bought the og leather one on ebay. I wear it on my belt and it’s so compact that i hardly notice that it’s there.

9/10: would buy again but I’ll probably never have to.

fujiwood,

I had the same problem. The oxide makes it gritty and stiff so I also added oil. Luckily, just by using it over time most of the moving parts are smooth. I agree that I’d probably also buy it again. It fits my main needs perfectly.

Curious_Canid, w Multitool
@Curious_Canid@lemmy.ca avatar

If you eventually buy another you should look at the Knifeless Rebar. You lose the blade, which you carry separately, but gain scissors.

fujiwood,

Honestly, that’s an interesting idea. I don’t really like collecting but if I ever had to buy another one that could be an option.

Curious_Canid,
@Curious_Canid@lemmy.ca avatar

I always carry at least one good knife too. I’ve been pleased with the Knifeless Rebar as a companion tool.

My main multitool these days is a Leatherman Free P4, but I replaced both blades with other third-party tools (from ZapWizard).

Nogami,

What is the quality of the 3rd party tools like? I’d be interested in the scalpel holder and the bit holder. I don’t need the Free P4 saw ever so replacing it would be just fine.

Curious_Canid,
@Curious_Canid@lemmy.ca avatar

The tools are 3D printed in metal. The designs are excellent and the tools work quite well. I’ve been using them for at least six months and haven’t had any problems.

I got the bit holder, the T-Shank saw blade holder, and the scalpel holder. They more than make up for what they replaced, except for the blades. Since I always carry both a plain edge and a serrated blade, it’s all a trade up.

ZapWizard was also very helpful.

just2look, w Backpack recommendations?

The Mystery Ranch Catalyst might fit what you want. Comes in a few sizes, but it’s a very sleek pack that is well built and durable.
