Curious_Canid, w "NKD" (days ago). Update to my EDC.
@Curious_Canid@lemmy.ca avatar

I love the pattern on the grip.

AndOfTheSevenSeas, w Prybar/marlinspike made from an old beryllium copper wrench

That thing is fucking cool man

kobra, w Backpack recommendations?

Chrome has a few different sizes of this bag. It’s a simple waterproof bag but really matches your description and I’ve been really happy with mine.

TheFriar,

I got one of those, and it was like a black hole for my shit. Every time I needed something, I had to empty the entire bag. I sold it after like a couple weeks of use.

kobra,

That’s fair!

Based on OPs description, I think the black hole vibe is what they were going for. It filled a particular niche for me too, since it’s such a simple waterproof design and a blank slate to use my own organization and mix of other bags or pouches.

fujiwood, w Backpack recommendations?

Most of the backpacks I think of all have a laptop compartment. The only two that come to mind that don’t are Jansport and Fjallraven. I don’t have any experience with either but I know they’ve been around for years(decades).

Can_you_change_your_username,

I've had a canvas Jansport for almost 30 years, I carried it for 3 years in middle school and it's been a hiking backpack since. If they're still made the same and you get a cloth one instead of those plastic character backpacks then it should last forever.

TheFriar,

I recently got a Jansport after years of kind of forgetting about them, having used them for decades at school. Still great quality, exactly what I needed. So glad with the purchase. Best purchase I’ve made for my work in a long time.

OmegaMouse, w Passport Sized Notebook
@OmegaMouse@pawb.social avatar

That’s really neatly made. What sort of stuff do you use it for?

fujiwood,

Thank you, I’m enjoying it.

I use a notebook to write down tasks, to-do’s, lists ie grocery, material or supplies for those tasks. I’ll also write ideas or crude sketches. The other day I was waiting for carry out with my niece and we played dots to pass the time.

Most of the time it isn’t anything special. I don’t journal(I’ve tried) or write down philosophical things(I haven’t tried). Just basic daily things.

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@pawb.social avatar

That sounds really useful! Good to have a lightweight booklet for jotting things down at any time

merde, w Today's EDC

how do you fidget that thing?

mouth_brood,

You hold the center of one of the gears and spin the rest of the fidget. You can also roll it across a desk or move the chains around the gears in the palm of your hand

Xanthrax, w Winter EDC!
@Xanthrax@lemmy.world avatar

The memo bottle sent me down a rabbit hole. I carry a messenger bag to work, and the big flat one looks perfect. I have to admit though, the metal ones look like a fancy way to sneak booze into the office lmao.

tychosmoose,

Just get into a habit of muttering “it’s not vodka” whenever you drink from it. That should put everyone’s mind at ease!

zzz, w today’s hobby pieces

That pick is very sleek! Much lower profile than mine… got a link?

Also, is the, uh, sturdy part (never learned those terms in English) detachable?

wren,
@wren@sopuli.xyz avatar

Slim Pickings from Covert Instruments, but the Riv pick and regular picks are available separately. Unsure what you mean by the sturdy part lol

crawley, w today’s hobby pieces

aroundsquare zircuti sigma begleri

Google translate is failing me on this one…

wren,
@wren@sopuli.xyz avatar

Hardly surprising tbh! Here’s the store page for it, it’s a skill toy that you sling around your fingers. aroundsquare is the company that makes these, zircuti is the materials (zirconium and titanium), sigma is the model / bead name, begleri is the skill toy type :)

Poringo, w 40/M/Linux Sysadmin EDC

Ventoy sounds very interesting, will give it a try.

How do you manage to have the personal data usb synced? How often do you sync it?

I like the idea of having my files always handy on a USB.

beirdobaggins,

The drive is LUKS encrypted. It is an option when formatting the drive using Gnome Disks in Linux.

Whenever you plug it in, it asks for the password.

On the drive I have a bash script that syncs my home directory to a folder on the drive using rsync.

I don’t create new files personal files very often and they are backed up in other ways too (to a NAS and also encrypted and uploaded to cloud storage) so I tend to only run the sync script about every other week or so.

I have a separate script and folder to backup my work laptop as well. for the work laptop I back my home directory and the /etc directory, because I have some customized configurations in etc. I run this every week.

Because the drives are USB C I can plug them into my phone for transferring files. The encrypted drive can be mounted using an app called ZUGate.

sighofannoyance,
@sighofannoyance@lemmy.world avatar

encrypted and uploaded to cloud storage

would you mind sharing your bash script for this, had dreamed of exploiting the 1G of free storage you get on every other corner.

beirdobaggins,

I have a script that does an unencrypted backup to my true truenas machine.

Truenas has built in functionality to upload encrypted or unencrypted backups to various cloud providers. It is using rclone on the back end but it also handles the connection to your cloud storage really nicely too.

ClopClopMcFuckwad, w 40/M/Linux Sysadmin EDC
@ClopClopMcFuckwad@lemmy.world avatar

Seems silly to carry a protective phone case but no phone.

beirdobaggins,

Yeah, a lot of people leave their phone out of the EDC because they use it to take the picture.

The case is a good stand-in.

Pregnenolone, w Behold...my stuff.

What do y’all carry in your wallets these days?

I haven’t needed a wallet for about 6-7 years now.

ki77erb,

ID, debit card, sometimes cash. I use my phone to make purchases more often now. It’ll be nice when my state allows digital ID so I can add it to Google Wallet. I don’t always need my wallet but I still carry it.

full_on_rapist, w My EDC as a father and frequent corporate traveler

Surely you’re using the sewing kit for torn clothes and not your childs wounds, right?

rubbs,

You would be correct.

Xariphon, w Mini prybar uses

When I was a kid I cut myself on one of those peel-up cat food can lids, so badly I saw my own bones for a moment.

Ever since then I've preferred to use a tool for opening those cans, if only out of paranoia.

timkenhan,

You mean those can with pull-up tab? How could that cut you so bad?

SatyrSack,

Skill issue

Xariphon,

I have yet to see a context in which this is a kind or helpful thing to say.

InigoMontoyota, w Have I finally perfected my keychain?

I believe your Keychain is missing…keys :)

KBae,

They’re in the key organizer duh 😂

Junkdata,

I had that key organizer, loved it that you can expand in case you got more keys but they can get bulky quick. I gave it to someone who had more keys than mine since i wanted to try an offbrand (clone) since the keysmart started becoming mainstream brand.

KBae,

Nothing wrong with mainstream, it’s a good product that does its job well.
