Mars rover mission will use pioneering nuclear power source (www.nature.com) angielski

Can I ask how everyone personally feels about using nuclear material for space exploration? For the rovers heating elements it will be just a couple of grams but for generating electricity via a RTG a spacecraft would require several kilograms of radioactive material.

mipadaitu,

Exactly, for its intended use, it’s really the best option we have.

mipadaitu,

www.riteintherain.com/all-weather-pens

I’ve been pretty satisfied with the rite in the rain pens. The ink is pretty nice for writing in all conditions. They have a pretty wide variety to choose from.

mipadaitu,

Loved 1 and 2, looking forward to this one.

mipadaitu,

There are certain aspects of it that look more complicated than they are because you are seeing it as a representation on a flat map. It makes a lot more sense when you see it on a globe with all the pieces moving in 3d space.

youtu.be/ujYYlXP12m4

It is complicated because there are tilts to the earths rotation and a tilt to the moon’s orbit, but people thousands of years ago figured it out, so it’s solvable.

mipadaitu,

It’s updated on my client already.

mipadaitu,

That’s exactly what Dark Matter is. Scientists saw that galaxies were spinning faster than expected, did some math, and figured out that based on current, known physics, they wouldn’t be able to stay together.

So they said “huh, must be additional matter that we can’t account for, let’s call it Dark Matter for the time being, cause we can’t see it.” It might be one big type of thing, it might be a thousand smaller types of things that all add up to this collective Dark Matter, but whatever it is, it doesn’t behave the same way we expect normal, everyday matter behaves.

Other scientists said that we must not understand something about physics and gravity at larger scales.
Other scientists said that light must not act the way we expect, and it’s throwing off our measurements.
Based on follow up research, there is more evidence for unaccounted for matter, than the other options.

It’s entirely possible that none of those options are correct, but most of the data we have right now points to Dark Matter is the best fit for the evidence we have.

mipadaitu,

“Tired light” has been theorized before, and it just doesn’t hold up to most of the evidence gathered.

It’s entirely possible that there’s something there, but most data currently backs up the Lambda-CDM model of the universe.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lambda-CDM_model

Only time will tell if this theory pans out, but I wouldn’t put much money on it.

mipadaitu,

Very similar to my EDC. I love my Signal, really can’t beat it for the size.

The Victorinox swiss army knife is simply the best pocket tool! (Edit: no one tool is everyone's best)

@edc

The more I look at alternatives, the more I realize, nothing can give you this much functionality in this small a package, while being so high quality and reasonably priced. Popular (machine-assembled) versions regularly go for $25.

The one caveat is that it falls behind modern knives in terms of safety and ease for opening/closing. I'd love to see a next-gen SAK without nail nicks.

mipadaitu,

Depends on your use case, I carried one for years, and found it limited.
Switched to a Leatherman Skeletool and used it far more often, one of the major advantages is one hand knife opening (without a spring). If I’m holding something that needs to be cut, it’s often inconvenient to have to put it down to get out a blade.
Best part is that it’s really not noticeably bigger than a swiss army knife.

These days I carry a belt pouch with a Leatherman Signal, but if I’m going somewhere that a belt pouch would be weird, I have a Skeletool in my pocket.

mipadaitu,

That’s true, Sting is my favorite part of DL’s dune. He played Feyd-Rautha so well.

Also, Patrick Stuart is my favorite part of dune. He was an excellent Halleck.

Kyle McLaughlin though… He was my favorite part of dune, such an outstanding Paul. Always felt a little mature for the role, but he did an amazing job none the less.

That and Alecia Witt… Man, that creepy little girl, and the oddly mismatching voice… My favorite part for sure.

Dean Stockwell…

mipadaitu,

Mars, no. But Venus… That would work great.
