JJROKCZ, w Baldur's Gate 3's director hasn't completely ruled out DLC

I’m probably going to get around 500 hours vanilla or near vanilla. One campaign took 150ish hours and I messed up some stuff along the way made me miss a lot of content in act 2 by doing something that entirely made me skip most of ketherics lines and actions

vasametropolis, (edited )

Edited for spoilers: I’m going to message you to ask but I’m wondering if I missed a lot of Ketheric as well.

leftzero, w Todd Howard says Starfield mod support is on the way next year

Is he talking about trying the paid mod thing again…? Because the game’s been moddable since day 1 (or -7, if you don’t count the early access as day 1), and the nexus is already full of mods, including the script extender…

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I’m sure he’s just talking about the Creation Kit toolset. We can do script related things and add models and textures; we can’t add new locations or NPCs afaik without the toolset. Or at least, nowhere near as easily. If it can be done, I’d like to read up on that.

Ser_Salty,

He’s talking about the Creation Kit, the proper mod tools to make more complicated stuff like quest mods

leftzero,

Eh, it’s all the same 26 year old gamebryo engine, we can probably just use the Skyrim tools. Or the Morrowind ones. Hell, at this point modders have probably made their own better ones, like they made the script extender, and wrye bash, and whatnot. 🤷‍♂️

Ser_Salty,

That is not how that works.

dudewitbow,

The mods made by creation kit, and the mods made using script extenders arent the same kind of mods.

CK allows modding in custom NPCs, followers and more models, as well as modifying vanilla asset models in the game easier (part of the reason why the only thing you see in modding space are texture swaps and full model swaps) as well as quest mods. These are the types of mods you see like in skyrim that can be enabled by console as well.

Script extenders enable mods that rewrite how the game functions, be it physics, adding new interactions and such.

Jesus. That pattern someone recognized with the releases of the toolset for each game might have been right on the money. The last game it took 6 months. The previous game was 3. Before that it was under 2. Starfield’s will come in a year 😩

Dr_Cog,
@Dr_Cog@mander.xyz avatar

Technically next year is in ~3.5 months. It could launch in January

circuitfarmer, w Todd Howard says Starfield mod support is on the way next year
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

The important shit is getting done already. The community isn’t going to wait for a toolkit.

And the things that toolkit likely allow aren’t really what modders want to change, anyway. I don’t think anyone wants to add quests, but fixing broken things seems to be the goal of the current mods.

thanevim,

What makes you think modders aren't interested in making quests? Have you seen Fusion City Rising for Fallout 4?

circuitfarmer,
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I just meant that the game is really long as it is. I think QoL stuff is probably the focus before quests.

Chailles,
@Chailles@lemmy.world avatar

Modders aren’t single minded collectives. A modder who wants to make a quest mod will make a quest regardless of the inconveniences a QoL mod they could have made would have fixed.

ArmoredThirteen, w This Fallout New Vegas Mod rewrites over 1,000 functions to improve performance and reduce load/save times

This article is talking about it like this is a new thing. It has been part of the core set of QoL mods for new installs for years now. Looks like they got a recent update though which is exciting

Edit: Didn’t look at the link just knew by name, looks like they released a new mod to compliment the one I’m talking about? This person is a fucking godsend

Coelacanth, (edited )
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

They did indeed release a new engine optimization mod, separate to the standard mandatory-install Stewies Tweaks. The past year has been crazy for NV mods.

Destraight,

It’s new to me, because I barely mod my games

Man… if vanilla New Vegas is still giving you performance issues, you might wanna upgrade your toaster.

steersman2484,

If it brings me a few minutes more battery life on my steamdeck, it is worth it

Potatos_are_not_friends,

The achievement is less about the need, but more that someone did it.

I’d be equally excited if something optimized the shit out a PlayStation 1 game too.

Coelacanth,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

I mean, isn’t vanilla New Vegas pretty famously unoptimized? I think its performance has less to do with your hardware and more to do with the engine (hence this mod).

MaliciousKebab,

Todd, I didn’t know you were a Lemmy user.

GreenMario,

How much can upgrading a computer cost, $10?

– Todd “I haven’t had to buy my own groceries since Morrowind dropped” Howard.

Chailles,
@Chailles@lemmy.world avatar

But I mean, this isn’t just for Vanilla New Vegas, is it? Plus New Vegas is known for being particularly unstable.

moosetwin,
@moosetwin@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I would if I could

Psythik,

It absolutely does, though. Vanilla crashes all the time and has several game-breaking bugs. I don’t recommend that anyone plays New Vegas unmodded – especially on a newer machine that’ll be less compatible (like my 7700X + 4090 rig running Windows 11) – unless you just hate yourself. You need community patches to get it in a playable state.

Same goes for Fallout 3. It’s not nearly as buggy as NV, of course, but try running it Vanilla on a modern Windows 11 machine and let me know how well that goes for you lol. You get massive framerate dips and it literally crashes every 5 minutes on a brand new PC if you don’t install any mods to make it compatible.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I mean I still play it on a modern system mostly unmodded (I do minor QOL mods like adding/moving fast travel points to limit loading screens but nothing super fancy or specifically for performance). Still on windows 10, though. I get no performance issues, though crashing is still a worry. It’s not like every 30 minutes tho, like when it was new 🤣

Psythik,

Still on Windows 10, though.

Well there you go. Win10 is old enough now to still be compatible with those games. But like I said, try it on a modern machine running 11.

That said, even in my Windows 7 days, NV still crashed all the time. The game had a rushed development; it’s a miracle that it runs at all on any PC.

thecrotch,

Windows 11 is essentially a skin and experience pack for win 10, in fact it was.originally going to be the nezt update to 10. very little has changed that will affect how games run.

Relo,

I played NV unmodded and hardly had any crashes in my +150 hours. All I did was to deactivate all but one CPU core iirc.

Atomic,

It’s not a toaster problem lol. Every time to enter a loading screen you pray the game doesn’t randomly crash

AceFuzzLord,

My toaster of a desktop can easily run the game at pretty good framerates yet the game just sometimes decided to just crash like it’s nobody’s business.

Hell, it ran it just fine before getting an upgrade from 4gb to something like 16gb of ram, but the problem wasn’t performance issues. Instead it was random crashing. Mods completely fixed that issue.

New Vegas is a pretty good game, but I wouldn’t wanna play it unmodded because I don’t wanna deal with random crashes.

revoopy,

Nah, with mods the lack of threading makes oblivion and fo:nv unplayable once you add on enough eye candy

FrankTheHealer,

The vanilla game is still Bella buggy, awesome, but hella buggy.

n3m37h,

Try playing F.E.A.R without the performance mod, a 5800x3d and 4090 will only get a studdery mess and that game is from 04

Oneeightnine, w What are some good funny games/mods out there?

The Stanley Parable, although it couldn’t be further from High on Life in terms of its comedy. Personally I don’t love the game but it’s absolutely hilarious.

Fun fact: There’s a fan-made Unity port of the Stanley Parable for PS Vita

azalty,
@azalty@jlai.lu avatar

I tried the game and it really wasn’t a fun experience for me. It’s just an overpriced walking simulator with some not really funny dialog playing.

All I did was trying to find bugs because I wanted to uninstall after 30 mins, when I figured out it’s not just the start that is slow, it’s the entire “game”

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

I mean yeah, it’s absolutely that.

Counter Strike 1.6 undeniably the best mod ever (for those who don’t know started as a Half-Life mod).

Now if you don’t have any friends to play with i would suggest CS: Condition Zero (Deleted Scenes)

It’s basically a single player campaign that, while it’s pretty rough on the edges, it still serves as a fun, single player diversion.

Disclaimer: if you get stuck on a mission just watch a Youtube walkthrough.

!deleted6508 avatar

While DLC would be welcome, I really want a toolset to make my own campaigns.

FoundTheVegan,
@FoundTheVegan@kbin.social avatar

I would too, but I get the feeling WotC might not allow that. They are hard core pushing their digital tabletop replacement with D&D beyond. A custom baulders for a flat fee would seriously eat in to their subscription model profits.

Which I'm all for! I'd definitely play custom BG campgains but I have no interest in paying $10 bucks a month for a Skype game or whatever.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

There have been digital tabletop tools that allow you to play any game for so long, that are free, I don’t see how they would ever really get anyone on board with a subscription service to do the same thing.

I use a couple myself with my group. They have some premium features like access to tilesets; but they also allow importing an image to use so it’s not like I feel compelled to subscribe.

Aqarius,

It’s what the point of the licensing mess a few months back was: to rope dnd-one away from third party VTTs

FoundTheVegan,
@FoundTheVegan@kbin.social avatar

Those free versions only exist because of the OGL, which WotC wanted to rein in. In part because of their own VTT being in development. This was also before WotC changed how they sold their books, now they are slanted to being part of a Beyond membership. While 3rd party seller still have a supply of books, the WotC main website is now only selling physical books as a bundle with a digital one for an up charge. Wizards is changing and is very much transitioning to prioritize their digital goods.

I mean this isn't just a wild conspiracy theroy, Wizards themselves said as much during an investor meeting.

over_clox, w What are some good funny games/mods out there?

Going back to legacy PC games from the 90s…

For adults that don’t mind blood, guts and cursing: Redneck Rampage

Something much more innocent for kids though: Mystic Towers

Anonymousllama, w Baldur's Gate 3's director hasn't completely ruled out DLC

Seems like a no-brainer to have a custom campaign system given the number of people who’ve picked this one up. You think they’d want to capitalize on their success regardless of how tired they are

Duke_Nukem_1990,

I wonder if a campaign editor or even something more sophisticated ala Neverwinter Knights has simply not been green flagged by Wizards of the Coast.

ChaoticEntropy, w What do you think is a good required completion time for video games? What examples come to mind of games that felt just right?
@ChaoticEntropy@feddit.uk avatar

Wholly dependent on the game. Lots of Indies feel like decent, self contained games ranging from 3-8 hours of gameplay. Gris, Inside, Abzu, Thomas Was Alone, etc.

nekusoul, w What are some good funny games/mods out there?
@nekusoul@lemmy.nekusoul.de avatar

When it comes to “classic” comedy, then Hi-Fi Rush is one of the highlights in recent times. Not only are there a lot of jokes in the dialogue that landed for me, all the cutscenes are also loaded with perfectly timed visual gags. Lots of humour hidden in the environment as well.

Other than that, any “serious” game that has a wonky physics engine can accidentally be pretty funny on accident. Slinging around corpses in Dark Souls 1 for example.
