I’ve yet to play a game with bullet time that I didn’t love

LazerFX, do games w Killer Bean - Gameplay trailer

Oh fuck yes. I remember reading about this year’s ago, glad to see it’s still going ahead.

Time to catch up on the lore. And by that I mean watch some kick ass videos again.

I’m actually impressed. I used to use animation: master back in the day when Jeff was creating the original videos.

To see it moved to a technically challenging (to create) game of this standard, is a HUGE amount of work. Well done. Can wait to play it

Yeah I played VI and after one game went back to V.

Looks like the perfect amount of goofy to dump like 20 hours in over a couple weekends then never launch again

It’s a roguelike, so potentially even more replayable than that.

muhyb, do gaming w Stormgate Opening Cinematic

Why do I have a feeling that they will ruin this with MTX?

Also Starcraft ended perfectly. Even though I would want more from Starcraft series, this doesn’t feel like Starcraft.

Carighan,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

This is explicitly meant to be an mtx vehicle so yeah, no way it won’t be ruined by them.

muhyb,

Too bad (for them). I hope Tempest Rising won’t end like this too. I really want to see another RTS era, but not like this.

Zahille7, do games w Half-Life: Overworld - Fan Made Trailer

I remember seeing this a couple weeks ago and being absolutely blown away by the production value of it all.

Not to mention everything seen in the “trailer” are original models made by the animator.

rozPierog, do gaming w The First Ever Complete Run of Trackmania's Hardest Map - Deep Dip 2

Deep dip 2 is/was an amazing spectator experience. You could see across hundreds of hours how it broke the best players of Trackmania down, one fall at a time.

While I started watching because of Wirtual, I ended up being a Bren fan, his dead pan delivery, and no bullshit approach was just commendable.

Not to mention that it was a huge hit for the community, and Nadeo (developers) I’m sure that they sold a lot of Club Accesses within the last month.

Huge congrats to everyone involved in the project, and to everyone who dipped their toes in the tower waters, both Shallow Dip, and Deep Dip. o7

fubarx, do gaming w The First Ever Complete Run of Trackmania's Hardest Map - Deep Dip 2

That was amazing! Watched the video with my Trackmania-crazy kid. I’ve played it a few times but I’m total crap at it. We couldn’t peel our eyes off the action. The first external shot of the track shows how insanely difficult it was going to be.

Aside from the gameplay of the recent Doom games being top tier I really enjoyed how they tied the original story into things. Was really cool to come to learn the tie in as I progressed through the game. This looks great I’m ready to rip and tear

KoboldCoterie, do games w Perfect Dark - Gameplay Reveal - Xbox Games Showcase 2024
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

This is the first I’ve seen of this game, but… this is definitely not what I expected from a game titled ‘Perfect Dark’. Maybe I just don’t remember the N64 game well enough, but this seems pretty far-removed, from a plot perspective.

Blaster_M,

It’s … something new. The original game used a game engine evolved from Goldeneye (N64), so while it did a lot of cool things back then, it was very limited in what it could do.

It’s interesting to see the Mirror’s Edge parkour system being implemented. It brings a fresh take on the typical gun and run fps formula.

Copernican,

But you could say it pushed the limits. It required the Ram Expansion Pak. I think only 3 or 4 N64 games required that. It was packed with weird game modes like counter op. The far sight gun as a weird experiment to see through walls. It really pushed the limits and tried to do a lot. TimeSplitters was a great spiritual successor to the Goldeneye/Perfect Dark series that continued the tradition.

Decoy321,

I had an absolute blast with the farsight gun. But honestly, if they bring it back, I hope they nerf the fuck out of it. Because kids online will be fucking insufferable with it.

Back then, you were playing with your friends in the same room. If one of your friends was being a douche and griefing with it, you could just slap them.

RightHandOfIkaros,

It looks like theyre not only using elements from the N64 original, but elements from Perfect Dark Zero as well, which wasn’t the worst game ever but it wasn’t a masterpiece.

Perfect Dark was always like the woman-led version of James Bond with a high science fiction flavoring. It doesn’t seem to stray too far IMO.

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

Wasn’t the original Perfect Dark hard sci-fi with aliens and spaceships and things? It’s possible I just don’t remember it well. Either way, this doesn’t look like a bad game at all. Just not what I’d have expected.

Eezyville,
@Eezyville@sh.itjust.works avatar

The alien was Elvis. I hope he comes back. What I miss the most was multiplayer. Playing with four people and bots that you could issue orders to, all the multiplayer modes, the weapons and their second functions (laptop gun torrent), and I think it had multiplayer campaigns. Also all the extra objectives during campaign mode to unlock more missions. Fun times!

Decoy321,

The tough part to recreate is that the multiplayer was so fun because it was innovative. It was one of the first games to do stuff like that.

24 years later, we’ve had a lot of games do a lot of stuff as well.

… But I’d still happily enjoy bringing all of it back, even if it was just a cosmetic facelift.

billiam0202,

Good news!

Perfect Dark was remastered in 2010 and is part of the Rare Replay you can buy for the XBox. Exactly the same, but with HD graphics.

Decoy321,

Well that’s awesome! Thanks!

morphballganon,

Did they ever fix the stick sensitivity issue?

billiam0202,

I don’t know; I’ve not had any issues personally.

Copernican,

I got more of a Mirrors Edge vibe than Perfect Dark watching that trailer.

RightHandOfIkaros,

Only from the parkour though. Literally nothing else felt like ME.

brenticus, do games w Dragon Age: The Veilguard | Official Reveal Trailer

The art direction seems kind of off, but sometimes that can shake itself out in game.

The tone of the trailer is definitely not the Dragon Age vibe. Lighthearted Oceans-style crew selection to deal with what looks like some sort of world-ending calamity? Yeah, that’s not right.

Things could work out but I’m sure not feeling optimistic.

micka190,

They’ve been slowly going in that direction with the writing since DA2, unfortunately. Inquisition definitely had more of it than the other 2, but this is almost fanfiction-levels, honestly.

Zahille7,

Why do you think Varric is still around?

essteeyou, do games w Starfield: Shattered Space - Official Trailer

Maybe they’ll get there eventually.

Unless they rework half the game’s mechanics from the ground up, I doubt it.

BigBananaDealer,
@BigBananaDealer@lemm.ee avatar

if cyberpunk and no mans sky and even fallout 76 can make a comeback so can starfield

Daveyborn,
@Daveyborn@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t see why it couldnt do a comeback, hate trains are addictive though.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

The examples of games that made a comeback were No Man’s Sky, a sandbox game missing features where, development-wise, it’s very feasible to add in missing promised features; and Cyberpunk, a game with good bones that didn’t function a lot of the time. Starfield’s problems are deeper than that, at least from my perspective.

The tech tree and leveling system is “improve by doing”, which runs into the same problems those systems always run into, which is why no one else does them anymore. It incentivizes me to get shot in combat on purpose so that I can improve my healing, and other stupid behaviors like that. So many of the quests are thoughtless fetch quests with nothing interesting along the way, and the game would actually be better with their omission than their inclusion. The endgame mechanic is an interesting one on paper, but seeing as the major quest lines only really play out one or two slightly different ways, there’s not much that’s interesting about going back to them, and you can also do all of them in a single playthrough, so there’s no need to engage in the endgame mechanic to see it. These are some of the problems that can be fixed but will likely be so costly and time consuming when there are Elder Scrolls and Fallout games to be made that I doubt it’ll ever happen.

The more fundamental flaws are that you can’t spec your character to interact with the world in wildly different ways and get clever with its systems; the universe doesn’t flow together the way that one of their terrestrial open worlds from before do, and fast travel is now mandatory; and the story walks right up to an interesting sci-fi story and stops just short of being good. To change these things sounds a lot like making an entirely different game.

WeLoveCastingSpellz,

I absolutely agree. Even with skyrim, I could mod every aspect of the game, I could make combat and the graphics good add lots of new mechanics and quests. But I still couldn’t make it good. The story, the copypasted dungeons and lifeless NPCs the game is rotten to the core and even if I can fix some of it I can’t just replace the core that would be a different game like Enderal.

BarbecueCowboy,

You’re not wrong, but I feel that level of support for one of their releases would be a bit out of character for Bethesda (Without the long-term monetization present in games like Fallout 76). Especially so with the trend of Bethesda’s comments indicating that the consumers are the ones who are wrong for not liking some of the more problematic game design decisions.

Abbrahan,
@Abbrahan@lemmy.world avatar

I think they mean more about reworking core mechanics of the game such as the planet generation and the fact that space flight is basically pointless outside of ship combat. I don’t foresee them being able to allow ships to fly down to planet surfaces in Creation Engine.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

cyberpunk was buggy but fundamentally sound. starfield is flawed in its core, no amount of bug fixing or system tweaking is going to fix it. they’d have to cut out space and planets entirely.

LostWanderer,

Fallout 76 made a comeback? I was pretty sure that one is beyond saving…

BigBananaDealer,
@BigBananaDealer@lemm.ee avatar

yep, its still got loads of daily players and is actually quite fun now. its way more responsive than it was on launch

TedZanzibar, do games w DOOM: The Dark Ages | Official Trailer 1 (4K) | Coming 2025

Meh. I was really hoping they’d go back to the sci-fi aesthetic of 2016 but instead they’ve doubled down on the weird high fantasy with guns thing.

It’s like they actually wanted to reboot Heretic/Hexen but they couldn’t get the license for it so they’ve just shoehorned it into Doom instead.

Odelay42,

Sorry it’s not going in the direction you hoped. I’m personally super into this vibe. Feels bizarre and different. Hopefully they capitalize on the theme and do something cool with it. If the “dragon” flight part is as tight and fun as recent Doom mechanics, it could be really fun.

uhN0id,

Agreed. I am not a fantasy fan for games really at all (with very few exceptions) but this looks so rad. The combination of tech and fantasy looks like a wild ride.

DarkDarkHouse,
@DarkDarkHouse@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

gaylord_fartmaster,

To me it feels like they’re leaning into more of a Quake 1 aesthetic, which I really like.

Funnily enough I never really liked that the quake sequels doubled down on the sci-fi so hard.

TedZanzibar,

Yeah honestly Eternal should’ve been a Quake reboot using the new engine rather than a Doom sequel. Everything about it felt like Quake.

trslim,

Yeah i really prefer the lovecraft aesthetic of Quake 1 over the tech, body horror of the sequels. Science coming into contact with something that defies science and reason is one of my favorite genres of fiction. The Myst, Event Horizon, Doom (especially Doom 3,) and the newest Rimworld dlc all really scratch that itch of coming into contact with something outside of reality, outside of reason and understanding. Really wish for more of that.

Caligvla,
@Caligvla@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Yeah, I kind of agree. I wish they’d make a new Quake or something, Doom is cool and all but this barely resembles it. Eternal was fun, but too goofy and campy, Doom 2016 did it perfectly.

Jyrdano,

Damn, rebooted Heretic or Hexen would be cool as hell.
