That’s kinda lame. The original one came with that. They wanna charge you extra for a plastic circle (and maybe the screw)? They’re already reducing the amount of plastic needed by reducing the size of the console. Pass that savings onto the customer and give us the fucking plastic circle!
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I feel like this looks worse than the original model. Sure, it's thinner, but it looks like a 2000s-era AlienWare design.
Not including a vertical stand is an odd choice, as well. I get that console hardware is typically a loss-leader in general, but not including something so basic that only costs $30 just seems like unnecessary nickle-and-diming.
Was the original not also an Alienware kinda design?
As shallow as it is, that’s one of the reasons I’ve been waiting for a refresh to buy one. I thought the OG was gaudy and trying too hard to look “futuristic” for me to want to have it next to my TV. Seems the slim carries on the tradition unfortunately…
Honestly I like the look of the consoles however the pricing is incredibly stupid imo. 450 for diskless is pointless when the disked model is 500. 50$ doesn’t seem like much of an incentive to save by going diskless. The better option would’ve been to charge 400 for diskless and then 100 for the drive rather than 80.
I first, I thought this was consolidating the line to a single SKU, and letting you add the drive yourself for a small premium. Instead, this looks like this is a new model with a reworking interior to save a bit on cost, and heat/power.
The one good thing, is that now every PS5 is a “Physical Edition.” It is also way more likely in the decades to come you can get a 3rd party drive, and hack it to work. Without the size or soldiering being an issue, it is more likely we can see 3rd party replacements.
This is just a first step into finally getting rid of physical media.
It makes the digital-only version more attractive: it’s cheaper and you don’t really risk not having a drive as you can always add it later if you really need it.
Lots of people will get the cheaper version and never get the drive. Then in a year or two they will quietly stop selling the drive due to low demand. For PS6, they will leave out the optical drive because the majority of PS5 owners didn’t have an optical drive anyway.
It’s also low-risk for Sony, they now get a good picture of the demand for physical media, if they miscalculated they can just keep selling the drive.
The odd choice was not enabling the m.2 from launch. I’m not sure building to a price is odd given VERY few gen 4 drives were around at the time and the memory prices were INSANE at that time.
Kind of amazing they have gone from circa £140 to £35 for 1tb in less than 3 years.
When I bought my PS5 a few months ago I considered waiting for a PS5 Slim in the hopes that it would be less fuckin ugly. Glad I didn’t wait, because they managed to make it worse by basically slapping the disc drive to the side.
The new PS5 has been reduced in volume by more than 30%, and weight by 18% and 24% compared to the previous models. There are four separate cover panels, with the top portion in a glossy look, while the bottom remains in matte.
Hm…I mean, I’m not sure I’d call it a “new look”, but I suppose there are some changes.
Still looks like an air purifier / conditioner unfortunately.
I was holding off with upgrading my PS4 Pro with SSD but when I saw new PS5 leaks I went with XSX. Sorry, that thing has no place in an adult living room lol.
Yeah, why they have to make it so curvy in the first place? And then they have to add a stupid extra base just to get it to not roll around. Too many designers in the kitchen IMHO.
I’ll take the bait. I consider both consoles evenly matched but from the perspective of Sony diehard it’s quite attractive value proposition:
I don’t care about first party exclusives because I’ve played enough Naughty Dog games by now. Third party ones will come eventually as always.
I didn’t own any Xbox consoles up until now so it’s a treasure trove thanks to backwards compatibility. Especially when plenty of X360 games run 4k60.
Game Pass is cool although new Microsoft games seem to be released in quite barebone state.
The console itself can be quite cheap where I live, got an XSX bundle with Diablo 4 for ~$450. Game Pass Ultimate with Live Gold tricks is like ~$70 for 2 years. If you want to get really cheap, region change to Turkey, buy rechargeable Visa and enjoy everything being -50% off all the time.
If you’re a PlayStation Plus Premium/Deluxe member, you’ll get access to a curated catalog of up to 100 movies***** through the Sony Pictures Core app to stream on demand from the Sony Pictures library as part of your membership. The catalog, which will be ad-free and updated periodically, features movies such as Looper, Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV, Elysium, and Resident Evil Damnation.** There will also be additional benefits for all PlayStation Plus members, so stay tuned for more details.
Still not worth the price increases, but I could see that being a meaningful value add to some.
Insomniac has really raised the bar for accessibility features. Even though I don’t necessarily need them, I love that these same features give me the ability to tweak so many aspects of the gameplay to my liking.
