rustyfish, do games w What are some good examples of "Where the fuck do you go" kind of games?
@rustyfish@lemmy.world avatar

I actually like those a lot. Just listing some in no particular order:

  • Metroid Prime Series
  • Dark Souls Series half the time
  • Resident Evil 1, 2 and maybe 8
  • Hollow Knight
  • Castlevania Symphony of the Night
  • Outer Wilds
ChilledPeppers,

I wouldn’t add hollow knight to the list. It is an exploration game, being lost is the point, the problem are linear games that you don’t know where to go next.

ampersandrew, do games w Recommendations for "girly" games?

My wife loves Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing, and she’s been way into Hello Kitty: Island Adventure lately. It seems to split the difference between those things and add some of its own spice on top.

YiddishMcSquidish,

I had childhood PTSD flashbacks reading “adventure Island” without ever having played any animal crossing games.

icecreamtaco, do games w Oblivion remake is... really making it apparent how outdated Bethesda is in its approach to making games

Maximum dooming for a game that almost everyone likes. lmao

Guitar, do games w What's a cancelled game you really miss?

Star Wars 1313 is a big one for me. Same with Battlefront 3, both would have been amazing. RIP og Lucasarts, you were a real one.

Also, Retro Studios has had a few concepts that sounded awesome. They were planning a few Zelda spinoffs I would have really liked to see. Heroes of Hyrule and the Sheik project looked cool as hell.

SpruceBringsteen,

Star Wars Galaxies was such an ambitious MMO at launch.

Crazy in depth crafting system, especially with regards to pets. With how materials were randomly generated and cycled out it created a market that actually experienced booms and scarcity.

Some of the servers went almost a year before all the materials required for certain weapons spawned. And the materials all had random stats that would affect the item you crafted.

sp3ctr4l,

Also a surprisingly advanced and customizable… ‘class’ system, which was really more like a whole bunch of branching skill trees you could mix and match basically various ranks of… allowing many weird, but often effective, hyrbrids of ‘classes’ that… could either focus on one main ‘class’, but augment it with certain abilities from other ‘classes’…

And then the Combat Upgrade happened, and everything got streamlined.

Also… being a Jedi/Sith used to be… exceptionally rare and difficult to pull off.

IIRC, basically, some kind of insane random seed type thing gave each of your characters a very, very tiny chance of being force sensitive… but you wouldn’t even know this unless you also found basically a hidden event/questline, and then that would unlock a whole set of force skill trees, allowing for a range of jedi to sith abilities, with some kind of mix effectively being a ‘gray’ jedi.

Finally… SWG … still appears to me to be the only MMO that actually attempted to implement a working, player vs player, bounty hunting and tracking system, within an mmo… as a core game mechanic of a player ‘class’.

Though I haven’t played all mmos, so I may be wrong about that.

… Also an entire skill tree for basically being a mayor and running your own player built town. A whole skill tree dedicated to like… administrative capacity and zoning laws.

Do MMOs even… do player built cities anymore? Or did they just mostly switch over to ‘you have a house in the set aside ‘suburb’ instance’?

Came here to mention Star Wars 1313.

Haven’t played Outlaws, but I guess that’s the closes we have come to that. Maybe a non-ubisoft game similar to that?

SexDwarf,

Wasn’t there also a cancelled Darth Maul project?

Guitar,

Oh damn, I forgot about that. I think you’re right. Wasn’t it supposed to be a more mature take on Star Wars?

SexDwarf,

It’s been a while but I think so. No idea what the genre was supposed to be, a soulslike maybe or something combat/combo based like DMC?

moonburster, do games w Are there any games you don't play as it was intended to be played? If so, what game and how?

Horizon zero dawn and forbidden west. I just roam around and by accident find the missions I’m supposed to do. I also exploit all the enemies, there is a hard lock on where they can walk, so I just stand 10 meter out of the zone and start hitting big enemies for 5 minutes without taking damage.

I will blame Skyrim for this behaviour

thewitchslayer,

I think I did that a few times in ZD when I first played. You likening it to Skyrim for that makes sense. The classic “if I stand on this rock, the giant can’t launch me into space”

Hyphlosion, do games w Ubi, it's $70 and people are vary of your mile wide puddles that drop 75% in price after half a year

Why do people manufacture arguments like this? Who is arguing that one is okay while the other isn’t? A couple random people on the Internet?

The only thing I can think of is The Last Samurai is a 20 year old movie and that somehow means not bringing up this historic fictional movie = you’re okay about a white dude becoming a samurai but not okay about a black dude becoming a samurai.

Whataboutism at its finest.

Did it not occur to this person that perhaps some people just don’t care about the movie, haven’t seen the movie, or plain just didn’t bring it up because it’s a movie? Is it “double standards” for one to pick their battles and not be enraged at everything all the time? My god this shit is exhausting.

Disclaimer: I have no opinion on the game itself because I frankly don’t care about it because I’m not the biggest Ubisoft fan outside of Rayman. Nor does the above necessarily reflect my opinion on the game’s historical accuracy. I’ve always loved The Last Samurai and Memoirs of a Geisha though and find both beautiful and touching films, so make of that as you will.

reksas,

when you dont have arguments that fit with what you want to do, you make up your own.

VitoRobles,

I like how OP also chose to do zero research of all the controversy of the Last Samurai, and the years of PR control.

RowRowRowYourBot,

You should watch the movie. Cruise’s character does not become a samurai. He spends time with the last samurai.

Hyphlosion,

You should read the rest of my post. You would have learned that I have watched it.

RowRowRowYourBot,

If that was true then why did you completely misstate what the movie was about? Cruise does not become a samurai at any point.

KeenFlame,

It is a fighting game with stereotypical characters. Not historically accurate in any way. This is astroturfing by some org that wants racial in fighting

Rachelhazideas, do gaming w Art imitates life

The male-hunter female gatherer dichotomy is an anthropological myth used to reinforce gender stereotypes.

StitchIsABitch,

Interesting read, still leaves a lot of stuff unanswered but some aspects were crazy, like when they said that they found remains buried with weapons and just assumed it was a male, until someone looked at the bones and found the opposite. Like isn’t that your job to check things before making assumptions?

Soggy,

The field of Anthropology has gone through some WILDLY problematic periods. So-called “scientific racism” is a big one but shallow assumptions about historical cultures based on current-day social norms was very common.

john89,

Soulifix,

You had the power to like edit the post and add your commentary into it. No excuse. Then again, you didn't even offer anything insightful as to the reason. Wow, just a one-liner that offered up absolutely no thought put into it.

john89,

Lol, you’re literally wrong and here you are still arguing with me.

Goodbye, gonna block you now.

Soulifix,

Okay, child. Let us know when you've grown up.

Or don't since you don't have the thought process to make a coherent thought for anybody to read.

codexarcanum, do gaming w Now what?

For me it’s trying to remember what I was doing, realizing I’m right outside the door of an extremely difficult boss that I’d given up on, and now i also have no idea how to play anymore. At that point I either uninstall the game to wait longer or I flush the save and start anew.

OrionTheElder, do games w What's the greatest joy you have gotten from a video game?

Playing Halo co-op with my wife.

smeg, do games w Longtime buddy of mine just got a gaming PC. What games would make up a good "welcome to PC" care package?

If your friend is new to PC gaming then they might not be aware of how much they can get for free. I just wrote a post (stickied in !freegames) summarising all the places you can regularly get freebies, could be a good way for them to try out a lot of different things.

Retro_unlimited,

Just in the past few years I got maybe 100-200 free games. I follow a few discord bots, and several free groups here on lemmy and Slickdeals website. Lots of resources. Amazon prime gives free games, epic free games, lots of free games on steam, itch.io, gog often has free games, other key websites often have free games too.

Can check steam sale prices on steamDB website.

smeg,

It’s crazy how many full games you can play for free nowadays, I claim them way faster than I can play them!

MrShankles, do games w What did everyone grab during the Steam Winter Sale?

Stardew Valley and Cyberpunk. Never played either one, but I’m starting with Stardew

Mr_Blott,

xavier666,

Duke_Nukem_1990,

I wish I could play Cyberpunk for the first time again. Enjoy! Did you see the anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners? Would highly recommend.

Poopfeast420, do games w Would "suggest price" be a positive option for steam?
@Poopfeast420@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

In a perfect world, sure, but in our reality you’d just get tons of people saying they want Elden Ring for a dollar or something.

But even if it worked, it’s just games getting on sale faster. Right now, you can either pay a higher price today or wait until the game gets as cheap as you want, but it might take months or years.

As for just the information, how much people would pay for a game, that’s what market research if for I guess.
