Xbox/PlayStation/Switch pre-ordering is dumb.

Steam has refunds now though, so if I know I’m gonna play it day 1 I’ll pre-order it and pre-download it, but when it turns out it’s dogshit I’m refunding that shit ASAP (sorry stalker 2, hopefully you’ll be good one day!)

Same as anything else, really. Find local tournaments or player hosted events that are smaller. Find out what the actual competition is like, and practice to rise above them.

Vynd, do games w How can i casual gamer enter a game online competition?

This isn’t a reply to your question directly but I’ll suggest getting into a community league instead and test some waters.

I play Dota 2 mainly which has no pay to win mechanics and all characters are free but the game is difficult to get into. That being said there are many communities who host local tournaments/in-house league which are rank locked and you can make friends and find players to play with.

Most games have something similar on discord servers and then you can get into an actual competitive stage eventually!

Dragon Age: Origins was a truly great game. Though fun, none of the other titles have captured the magic of the first.

Ah the bug muck. I once made it to the Greek area before moving on to seiken densetsu 3 which I also did not finish because I went back and played through chrono trigger again even though I’ve finished it like 5 times on multiple platforms. Why some games never get finished is a mystery. It’s not a bad game for square usa’s first game.

SonOfAntenora,

I mean, chrono trigger is chrono trigger after all.

Don't use best coding practices, do not make readable code following good naming/formatting standards, have it only make sense for you in the moment and require weeks to debug even by you

You get it!

One of my favorite games of all times. Absolutely stellar soundtrack

The alchemy system is really unique.

SonOfAntenora,

It’s more interesting than the magic sistem in secret of mana, and maybe more balanced. Secret of mana is the closest game to this one in terms of mechanic, but there’s a certain tiger boss that is required to unlock the magic system and it’s something else entirely.

chiliedogg,

That tiger in SoM is so awful.

jimmux,
@jimmux@programming.dev avatar

I always wondered why Secret of Mana gets the attention, and Evermore is largely forgotten. It has a doggy companion!

capt_wolf,

I don’t feel like the story telling was as good in Evermore. Secret of Mana grabbed me a lot more with it’s characters and it’s difficulty, and I always loved the plot despite some pretty obvious flaws. The music is still one of the best ever soundtracks too.

I think Evermore also got completely overshadowed by Chrono Trigger being released just 2 months before in the US.

jimmux,
@jimmux@programming.dev avatar

It was a very basic story with a self-insert character, probably intended for a younger audience. That worked very well for me at the time. I think it was my first RPG so I really enjoyed getting lost in those environments.

asmoranomar,

Evermore also had a lot of bugs. I remember getting softlocked so many times in the game. SoM had a few bugs too, but I didn’t recall being softlocked as often.

Rai,

I’ve beaten them both a few times. I’m not sure you can get softlocked in mana, but yeaahhhh getting softlocked in Evermore is brutal!

Afflictedlife,
@Afflictedlife@lemmy.ml avatar

But I liked chain casting infinite moon mp drain and damage spells to kill lock every boss.

I’m trying to figure out

You can just paste the rest of the photos in a comment. Lemmy can host it locally or you can link to something like imgur.

I will do it right now I’m on mobile so it’s kinda meh but I have some screenshot from the first area that I need to clear up a bit

Ptsf, do gaming w Friendly Reminder

There is a genuine downside, in that launch numbers are what most gaming publishers pay attention to most closely when deciding to greenlight expansions and sequels, but generally there are far more reasons to wait and know what you’re getting than to take the dive early and blind.

baltakatei,

“How exploitable is this audience? Let’s pay close attention.” audience preörders en massé“Very. Now that we have their money we might as well fire most of the developers and squeeze as many sequels and expansions out of this IP as they’ll tolerate. Gotta min-max that supply-demand curve.”

Ptsf,

That does unfortunately and irrefutably occur. It’s not every case, but it is sadly likely a majority.

ayyy,

You can contribute to launch numbers by buying within a few days of reviews coming out.

Almacca,
@Almacca@aussie.zone avatar

I care not about ‘launch numbers’ nor the whims of soulless executives.

Ptsf,

Sure, but care or not they can both certainly influence development on your favorite IP. Having the knowledge to be able to exploit this exploitive practice is not the same as supporting it or agreeing with its existence, just simple acknowledgement of your ability to influence outcomes of which in this case I’d suggest picking the one that is forever in your own personal favor.

Almacca, (edited )

I don’t really care if games get sequels or DLC, either, to be honest. Not gonna pre-order them either.

There’s no shortage of stuff to play.
