nyahlathotep, do games w Can an American explain to me what's with the grooves on PS1 NTSC cases?
@nyahlathotep@sh.itjust.works avatar

Is this because everything in america has to be bigger?

? it’s the same size?

Anyway, I guess they thought it looked cool? idk it’s just part of the back cover, it’s not molded into the plastic or anything

eru777,

As someone pointed out, they are actually not the same size. I was mentioning the grooves being part of the “everything needs to look bigger and meaner in USA”. As part of the whole marketing strategy that still goes on to this day. E.g. In kirby game covers in the US he looks angry.

This is the way! Also you pick up the physical copies used from places like Vintage Stock. Don’t even have to pay full price. Best time to buy digital is during a Steam sell.

I hope you have a rom where the elevator in the tower of the gods works…imagine getting 80% through the game and then an elevator doesn’t work, and you can’t finish the game…

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

Oh god, is that an issue with ROMs for the HD edition? I hope so too, hopefully I can just swap save files over to a functional ROM. And if all else fails I can just say it ended there since it would be my second play through

jordanlund, do games w Can an American explain to me what's with the grooves on PS1 NTSC cases?

It’s a holdover from the original PS1 long boxes:

brap,

I have never seen those before and I owned plenty of PS1 games. Is that how the American ones looked?

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, at launch in 1995 they were all like that.

glimse,

Really?? I got a PS1 when they were pretty new and all of my games are in standard jewel cases.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

The first 100 or so PS1 games in 1995 and 1996 were in the long boxes, then they shifted to the CD cases.

glimse,

Wow, it’s not like I was doing the shopping myself in 1995 but I’m still surprised I’ve never seen one of these!

Carighan,
@Carighan@piefed.world avatar

That's fascinating. Why where those like it? To not slide around so easily?

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

I think it was just a design differentiator. Saturn and Sega CD cases looked like oversized CD cases.

Canadian here. We had that pattern too, except for things like Greatest Hits editions which were arguably even uglier.

I’m not sure why it’s like that. It does kind of remind me of the grooves in the side of the original PS1 though.

DrDystopia,

We only had the “Platinum” line, just a silvery platinum color instead of the very tasteful green you showcase.

wccrawford, (edited ) do games w Can an American explain to me what's with the grooves on PS1 NTSC cases?

The grooves?

The pattern on the left is actually just inside the case, under a clear part of the case. That part is black in the Euro version, but the case looks the same otherwise. (We have cases like that, too.)

Edit: Also, that Japanese one? I’m pretty sure it’s the same style, but turned upside down. That’s the base of the case. Searching Google, I found a copy on Ebay that shows the front, and that section of the front of the case is clear for that one, too.

Mutterwitz, do games w What game sequel ruined a beloved franchise or character for you?

Might & Magic IX.

I love Might & Magic VI - VIII but IX killed the franchise for me. Wrong vibe, terrible bugs. I tried X when it came out, but it is also a different game.

I can hear this picture.

OIIIIIIIIIIIIII

brsrklf,

Such is Aryll’s power. I am pretty sure she can invade people’s minds.

Exhibit A : just her being there is enough to change the background music in all of Outset Island to her theme.

It lives rent free in my head. I’ll be going through my day and then suddenly… there it is. Like some brain worm that occasionally rears it’s head and reminds me to play Wind Waker

donuts,

Same, but instead of Aryll I just head the Squid Hunt game guy. SPLOOOSH! KABOOM!

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

That guy’s sound effects always stood out to me for some reason. Like I don’t know why but they seemed oddly out of place for the game. Not in a bad way but in like a jarring way

caut_R, do games w Day 385 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games I've been playing

I love the visuals… I wish there were way more games out there looking like that, but at best it‘s (great) cell-shaded characters/monsters in a clay/plastic-looking world nowadays.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

I think we’re definitely over due for the “Pixel Art” Indie game era to be over and instead move onto to trying to mimic things like this. Not that I have anything against the Pixel Artwork for games nor am I trying to make it “1 versus the other”, but it’s been going on too long and I feel like it’s starting to stagnate and make it harder to find stand out games

caut_R,

I think it‘s so dominant cause it‘s cheap and easy to make, and it runs on anything. I don‘t see it go anywhere anytime soon. But I hope some AA studios will try their hands on this style.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

Definitely the reason. I suppose the runs on anything point I can appreciate considering my very first “gaming” device was hardly anything suitable for gaming

brsrklf, (edited ) do games w Day 385 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games I've been playing

On the subject of colours/lighting, not sure your emulator is to blame because this is one of two things I didn’t like about that remake, and I played it on Wii U. They made everything neon and cranked lighting effects to the max.

The other thing was removing the Tingle tuner, that was a lot of fun in coop on the GameCube, and replacing it with a soulless online message system that didn’t even last for the whole (very short) life of the console (because it was tied to miiverse, a service they killed after a few years).

The game does have a long intro, but IMO Twilight Princess was even worse. That game took forever to start.

Nikls94,

That long intro makes TP nice the first time you play it, or when you replay it after -holy moly- 18 years in my case.

But replaying it shortly after makes the intro pretty boring.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

I played originally on Wii U but wasn’t sure if it was like that on there. It’s a shame because other than the gaudy bloom I’d say the Wii U version is one of the best ways to play it in the modern age.

And I do agree with Twilight Princess. I have still never finished it. I’ll start it, and maybe make it through the opening, before somehow losing my save somehow. I’ve legit been through maybe 10 different save files at this point. It’s a shame because I want to give it a fair chance but I seem cursed to forever lose my TP Saves

brsrklf,

IMO the cool thing about TP is the weirdness. There are those eerie choirs, even in the jingles, there are some quite grotesque designs, and a few quite disturbing and puzzling cutscenes.

It’s definitely the Zelda game for weird moods, maybe not as crazy as Majora’s Mask but more like a constant feeling of something being not right.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

I have fond memories of Twilight Princess’s weirdness and art style because when it launched I was a young kid and my Dad played through the whole thing with me watching. That weird art style is so charming in a way

SkunkWorkz, (edited ) do games w How do gameplay youtuber develop interesting commentary?

You can also do it like Dunkey does. Just record gameplay first, edit it to make an interesting or funny video and then later add the commentary and act like it’s given live during the moment. It’s easier to do if you aren’t used to giving off the cuff commentary during a live let’s play video. And you don’t have to be a live streamer to be a gaming YouTuber.

Maybe just focus on creating short videos first so you learn how to edit, give commentary and create little stories (yes even Let’s Play videos need to have some sort of “story” and theme). Remember the first dozens of videos will suck. Don’t focus on viewership or subs focus on honing the craft first. You also need to figure out your unique selling point, the thing people watch your videos for instead of the millions of other gameplay videos, and you will only figure that out if you start making videos.

the lack of endgame content has been a problem for a while for pokemon game, it was only the battle tower at the end in most games. i did like the ultra moon of the various legendaries which can ben shiny you cant get easily in previous consoles.

Zoot, do games w How can i casual gamer enter a game online competition?
@Zoot@reddthat.com avatar

Personally I love Counter-Strike 2 or Rocket League, both have the simplest way to play competitively - You simply play Comp and then get ranked.

Cs2 you could use Faceit or Leetify to create a team and join tournaments, though I think some cost money with a prize pool.

RL is awesome though, you get like 5 - 6 mini tournaments a day hosted by RL themselves. Similar to CS2 you get ranked and then join a tourney with skill-alike players. Very fun, very easy to set down, always feel like you can play “competitively” no matter the time available or skill.

Both games have a very quick learning curve, and then as you play and practice you slowly get better (hopefully)

Joelk111, do games w How do gameplay youtuber develop interesting commentary?

I’d second the fact that it’s really difficult to do it, and that you genuinely need to enjoy the process. More likely than not, you won’t “make it” and you’ll just be doing it as a hobby. Though, more than anything, you just need to do it. You might not know what to say today, tomorrow, or next month, but eventually you’ll find a rhythm and know what works for you. There’s no way to find that rhythm if you aren’t making anything.

My source for this is the fact that I’ve been doing YouTube for nearly 2 years now, creating weekly videos. I think they’ve been of pretty good quality for about 14 or so months now. I have just over 500 subs which, while I’m super proud of and thankful for that, isn’t even enough to enable ads on my channel. I also specifically chose a niche that’s a tad easier to stand out in, as the market for gaming videos is so so so saturated and difficult to stand out in, as the barrier for entry is so low.

I don’t mean to discourage, and of course wish you the best of luck, but I do want to share a realistic view on it based on my experiences being a small potato YouTube creator.

S_H_K, do games w What game sequel ruined a beloved franchise or character for you?

FF Cotw why in the everliving fuck put that idiot in the game. Sure you can make millions by putting CR7 in the game same as you can make 10 grand by sucking dicks for a 20 in an alleyway. I can’t believe how many shit decisions they make and still have enough money to burn on it.

Loved MK 1 then 2 blew my mind 3 was good 4 blew my mind again. Then until 9 I didn’t touch anything too goofy I haven’t been able to play the single player much (of DA Deception and Armageddon) but didn’t click anyway. MK9 was goated. Then MKX didn’t liked it at all (cant handle a game with such bad animations). Loved 11 and now MK1 is like meh.

Wasn’t a sequel but I used to love League until Yone and the healing meta. Sylas saved it for a while; like I love gimmick chars and a rebel to boost, sign me TF in. But all in all the BS balance the toxicity the lack of respect for my time, it was too much. Switched to WF and couldn’t believe how chill it was.
